I think crates are your best bet and I agree, they are your safest option when traveling with your Basenji's.

I don't know of any pet barriers, but good luck on the move! We moved from Pittsburgh to Boston (2 days drive) and it was just me in the car- whew, that was fun! Lol. Pleasant journey!

Thanks to everyone that replied :D I think i might have found something…. I ordered it and i will have to test it out and see if it's gonna work or not ... I will keep u all updated on if it does :)

Another suggestion is the car harness – there are several available for use in the seat belt:

Hmm that might be a option too. I will have to get one and see if they can chew threw it.. hopefully they won't but if u new my 3 you would no never to under estimate them. They have pretty good team work when it comes to doing something there not suppose too … lol

Jack never chews on his…..but he did figure out how to unbuckle it from the seatbelt! LOL! Takes him a few tries, so we can usually get in an hour of driving before he gets himself loose. After a couple of times of getting out and us putting him back in, he finally gives up and goes to sleep.

EL D does fine with his harness but it has a swivel snaphook so it slides over his back and doesn't get caught while he moves around. On the other hand, he chewed through his "heavy-duty" nylon leash at the vets when they took him in back - the assistant said she only turned her back on him to get something off the counter. Talk about fast.

I have car harnesses which work fine with Jazz, as she is pretty agreeable to anything as long as it's not the crate – remember, she gets car sick, so I prefer to have her on a seat where I can reach the trash can for her to throw up in.
Keoki can get out of the harness, so usually he just winds up riding free. I don't crate him in the car because he HATES the crate and sits and tears it up. We do have the plastic crates, and I have thought he may prefer the wire ones, but I don't have the extra cash right now for another experiment with him. I am afraid he'd just break a tooth trying to get out. He does not like to be confined in a small space.*
I KNOW they say the crates are safest, but still have a hard time seeing them slide around in there. Seems like if I had to slam the brakes or if we got hit, they'd get pretty beat up in there. I prefer the harnesses.
*On a different note - you know I have his bed-time crate in our spare room inside an ex-pen, so he is never actually locked inside the crate. The ex-pen no longer has the top on; it's just open. Well, Sunday we went to Mass and he was, as always, inside his ex-pen. When we got home, I about died laughing. I don't know how he did it, but he had totally twisted the ex-pen up.His crate was all sideways, the door to the pen was folded around and inside the pen, so I had to pull the sides out and around to get to it. I should have taken a photo. I can't even describe the shape the pen was in.
I guess from now on when I leave the house I'll have to put the top on just to keep the pen in one piece. LOL

You can also secure the crates with the seat belts and/or bunge cords so they don't slide around. That is what I did when I had my Accord….

I meant sliding around IN the crate itself. Jazz tries to stand up in there and slides around on every curve in the road. Then, of course, when she would vomit, she'd sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide around in it. Nasty, nasty stuff.
With the harness, she sits up to vomit and puts her head in the trash can!:)

I am lucky (knock on wood) all mine ride great... crate pads keep them from sliding around and they just sleep anyway....

I know what you mean, Jazzys Mom…Even with blankets Tosca slides around too. Luckily, she doesn't mind. I use the crate in the car when I am driving around with her by myself for a longer period of time. However, if my husband is there we just leave her out and once we are on the highway she usually just curls up on the passenger's lap and sleeps :)

If you put some of that Non-slip material on the bottom and then the blanket or pad on the top it will keep it from slipping.
I wish that everyone would confine their "dogs" regardless of the breed when on the road… Sleeping on your lap is fine till that one time you have an accident... you have seat belts... they have nothing....

Sure makes clean-up easier! I used to keep wipes in the car to clean her, esp. before shows! ew. I just layer plastic bags in the trash can, and tie 'em off as used, then toss when we get to where there's an outside trash can.
I'd make video to show, but really, that'd be gross :eek:
She's really good in her harness, so it works out quite well.
As I said, Keoki continues to be my car challenge in terms of how to best travel with him. But he loves going in the car in general.
