• I have offered. I filled out a foster application but was told to indicate that I was actually only able to transport and do home visits. I have never actually done a transport but have been asked a couple times. Usually someone is already signed up it by the time I offer.

  • I adopted 2 dogs from BRAT. I have offered to transport also. It doesn't seen to come up that often. I've only been ased once in 6 months and I got that too late because my e-mail was messed up.

  • CyrusVirus- I am also a member of BRAT and have fostered, done some transports, and an evaluation.. I'm also in Ohio.. To sign up to be a volunteer just go to basenjirescue.org and click "Join BRATS efforts" and then just fill out the form.. Its a good thing to get involved with! I've had a lot of fun working with BRAT!

  • Also, if you are interested you might want to contact the person who coordinates the basenji mixes, her name is located on the BRAT website. I haven't transported any full basenjis but I've helped out with several runs to get the mixes out of kill shelters. Another thing I've done is to set up a BRAT table at community events. I've done a couple where I set up a table with a poster about basenjis and made a notebook with current adoptable dogs. If nothing else it gives me a forum to tell people about the breed and point them towards the website if they are interested.

Have you all seen the rescue groups set up at Christmas outside of Borders bookstore? They wrap gifts for free but have a donation jar. I'm not sure if those groups just contacted the store or what but I thought next year before Christmas I'd try to find out how to do that.

  • Are you all on BRAT-Chat list? I am not currently, but that is where BUR(basenji underground railroad) runs were sometimes mentioned, as well as the B-List. I occasionally get an e-mail from someone in my area asking if I can transport, and I enjoy doing it. We have made 200 mile legs on occasion, but also 100 mile legs as well. Most BRAT adopters are encouraged to make their own transportation arrangements if possible, BUR runs are not all that frequent in some areas.

  • Im on the brat-chat list. I've volunteered for some runs that way but I'm in east Tennessee right off I-40/I-75 so it's not uncommon for the runs to head through this way.

I worked at Barnes and Noble for a while, and they do the same thing. At Barnes and Noble, you should contact the store's Community Relations Manager and ask to sign up to gift wrap for donations. All donations go directly for the charity, and (at least at my store) the clerks were always so busy we sent everyone who wanted something wrapped over there…..and there are a lot of people who want things wrapped at xmas 😉 Ask to sign up early....there are all kinds of groups who sign up to do this kind of thing. You could probably also bring some brochures or flyers with info about BRAT or the breed.

Oh- do a Friday or Saturday evening if possible, those are the busiest times, and bring friend so that you don't get overwhelmed.

I am on the BRAT-chat list, but what is the B-List? I have heard of it before but never knew what it was??

  • I would try contacting the coordinator for your area, or one kinda close to you.
Liz in IL has my addy handy. Once you do one -they keep your info handy :p
I love to do the runs, I cant really foster and it makes me think I am still helping out.
Congrats on your willingness to help out!

  • Everything helps BRAT with b's. Fostering, eval, transports.
THANK you all who have offered your time to help b's in need.
    It does take a village…

  • Hi Basenji Lovers-
I'm BRAT's Basenji mix coordinator, this is my first posting to this forum (so I don't even know if I'm doing this right), but I'm sending out this post in desperation

A transport run I had hoped would be a go this past weekend did not happen, but it was very short notice. " Sheba" was pulled from a kill shelter in Columbia by a Nashville BRAT member, this person cannot keep her longer than Wednesday (18th) because she is going out of town for work.

So now I desperately need a short term foster for a few days, and I'm trying to fill a transport run that goes from Nashville to Memphis, TN then on through Arkansas along I-40 – and then up on Hwy 71 through southwest Missouri.

I'd like (need) to get this pulled off Saturday the 21 (possibly Sunday). PLEASE, can anyone along this route help out? Sheba is a dog/people friendly, healthy 12 pounder who will ride in a crate (she doesn't have her own).

Please let me know ASAP if you can help, reply to giza1@telus.net Thank you so much.
    -Joanne

  • Can anyone on the list help her?
