Table bites

Basenji Talk
  • I have decided to give Medjai a little bite of my food. I don't know whether he likes it or not. It was gefilte fish. He took it with the lightest of touches, put it on the ground, pawed at it, tried to roll on it and smushed it into the carpet. I had to get out the vacuum and vacuum it up, fighting Medjai trying to eat it still. Well, now he really likes that spot on the carpet, still no word on the actually liking the taste though.

  • Too funny! We had a spot on the carpet where we had dropped a piece of our dinner & we were very quick to clean it up and I even used some spot remover on the carpet & then cleaned that really well…but Jackpot still LOVES that spot & licks and chews on the carpet there if we aren't watching him closely.

Michael… that is too funny... good for you... for even trying it...;)

You know that Basenji love to roll in "dead" things that smell like fish.... so he is right on.... not that you needed gefilte fish rolled and grounded into your carpet....

  • ummm, be careful with fish. Unless Blaze is just 'special'… any kind of seafood and he has an impressive greasy rocket poo display. After the oyster incident, he can't go over to my parent's house anymore. It took forever and a lot of Dawn grease cutting action to clean that wall...
    We have learned well

  • I think that is probably due to the oyster, Knipper. There is a lot of dog food with salmon in it, so I don't think regular fish, especially in small amounts has that kind of an effect.

Yeah, Pat, he also likes the little piece of matzo that I gave him. I think it's mostly due to the thin cracker rumbling when he nibbles at it.

That good news, Dennis - and you are likely to find, in the long run, that the older boy will teach the pups far more than you ever can. They'll get their street cred from him !

ROFLMAO, okay Patty you are right. They are not fool proof. They are "it gives you enough time to notice and stop their evil snakey head chewing" leashes. I made mine. I went to home depot, got the connectors and 12 to 18 inch thin chains and put them on. The brat coordinator here was the one who told me what to do. Before that, I had a BAG full of chewed leashes sewn back together that I took with me to do home visits and show potential owners the dangers, lol.

@Gabriel: Yesterday on another thread I read how someone takes a squirt bottle of water and does a quick spray when she bites and then says no. I tried that on noel and it worked perfect. I just have to grab that bottle and she goes and lays down. She hasn't bitten me once today. I know it will take more than one evening to train her not to bite but I will be patient. The problem with this method is that Noel will not learn to soften her bite so if she ever does bite it will probably be with full force and result in serious injury. Though it takes longer to train, it is much better especially with young children in the house to use the method described in the link given in the other thread.

Sour apple spray has been 0% effective with my b but I made a home-made spray of mostly water and some cinnamon oil that works really well. Admittedly, Beegin was chewing furniture and books but it might work for other dogs too. Just make sure to keep it out of anybody's eyes. After I sprayed down the chair legs, I rubbed my eye. BAAAAD idea.

Fine we have no incedents since then but I just dont allow situations that allow any problems to occur (keep him crated when guests are over). In general he is a very sweet & loving dog, but in the right situation he will bite without hesitation and draw blood. 99.9% of the time he is calm & loving. When injured, is a situation you can't control. I am the only one he will let near him in that situation.
