Benny has a Rash

  • Noticed a rash on his neck the other morning when he woke up, and noticed that he had red bumps all over his body (head to toe, on his back and belly, legs, and face). He just got his Combo 5 Way shot on Monday, this was noticed on Thursday morning. Also, right when he woke up that morning he threw up. His behavior is normal and has shown no signs of being sick, other than throwing up that morning and the rash. We're going to go see the vet tomorrow, has anyone seen anything like this?

  • Looks like hives. Probably a reaction to the vaccine. Often with puppies I will give 1/2 a benadryl tablet before they get their vaccine. I don't know what is in a 5-way? I usually do DHPP (no lepto), and I have that vaccine given separate from the others (rabies, bordatella).
Your vet may say 'oh, they shouldn't have a reaction to this vaccine'...but lots of Basenji puppies do. Definitely check with your vet before you do any sort of medication, but he will probably recommend some sort of antihistamine.

  • The vet told me to give him benadryl 2-3x a day when I told him he has a rash. I've been doing that, and it's been helping the itch. I thought it was hives too. I was just hoping that it wasn't mites.

I don't think it looks like mites. I would just give him a dose of benadryl prior the vaccine next time, and that should take care of it :)

  • Thanks for the tip :) .

  • You may want to give him a warm oatmeal bath to help with the skin irritation. Basenji's and baths don't usually go well but I've found that if you sit in the tub with a small amount of water it usually helps calm them down. Good Luck and keep us posted.

  • Poor baby. Also from now on, in addition to the benadryl, I'd give the rabies separated out from the combo and skip the Lepto. Check with your vet and do your own homework about the Lepto though. (But no sense in overloading the immune system with a bunch of vac's at one time.)

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@Hana: She is 10.5 months now so we'll be thinking about transitioning at some point to an adult food. Here's a link to many of the dry foods lots of folks on this list use. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/ IMO, if you can afford the 5 star foods, go for it. Kipawa eats Taste of The Wild Bison formula and loves it! There's no grain or corn or 'meal' in it.

If he still wears the same collar and it is the culprit, it will irritate already raw skin and prevent complete healing. I know the holidays are usually tight for everyone, but perhaps finding a (maybe no-so-stylish) collar made of a completely different material and without dyes would stop the cycle. That's what eventually worked for Elvira, my cat. If it is confined to one spot where there an item directly touches the skin on a regular basis, it sounds more like contact dermatitis to me. Any creams may exacerbate the situation. If it was a food allergy, I would expect a more widespread problem. I would suggest, if he wears a cloth or nylon collar, get a natural leather collar with stainless steel loops rather than coated brass. Since colorful nylon and cloth seem to be the rage right now, it may be a little more difficult to find. The payoff is the leather collar will last much longer than cloth or nylon. If it is felt a cream or ointment must be used, break open a Vitamin E capsule and rub the goo on his rash. It is odorless and if Kiya feels she must be Little Miss Nursemaid, the Vitamin E will benefit her as well.

@obi1 said in Ear Rash. Dog Ear Vasculitis: Do you know of better ear muffs? Obi, I saw a funny looking knitted cap that might fit over Basenji sized ears on etsy.com. I think it would help prevent the ear edges and tips from becoming frostbitten. The shop seems to focus on Cats, but the owner appears to be willing to do special orders. Worth a try....

@tanza: Could also be a reaction to some kind of bite… here is another thought... when did he have he last round of shots? But in the end, I think I would take a trip to the Vet... could just be a little ear infection going on... they can and do get yeast infections in the ears.. and I have found that puppies for what ever reason get dirty ears... and slight infections. Kobey had one when he was about 4/5 months old... His second round of puppy shots he got on the 7th of this month. His next round isn't until the 6th of March. I am going to call the vet this afternoon & ask them if we should bring him in. His ears do get really dirty with wax buildup. I have actually used a q-tip (he's gotten a little better) & cleaned them almost every other day in the past week because everytime I look down there I see some buildup. Maybe that itself is another sign that something more is wrong. I will check his paws & rear tonight for any signs of an allergy but I examined him a lot last night (after noticing his ears) & didn't see anything else out of the ordinary.
