Killer dog

Basenji Talk
  • Please bear in mind, we do not normally play nor allow this sort of play with our dogs, BUT….

tonight Jazz was on my lap and Darren started making these silly jerky moves toward her to see what she would do, and in typical Jazz fashion she could not have looked more bored.
Keoki, on the other hand, became intrigued from across the room, so Darren made a few moves toward him also. Keoki just watched with his ears perked up for a few seconds and then................ ATTACKED!!!!!

It was not a mean attack; the dog was playing, but in a way that is way out of the norm for him with a human. Darren was so caught off guard and was laughing so hard he didn't really know what to do.

Funny thing was, Keoki stopped as soon as I said, "Keoki, that's enough". :D

  • That's the thing about dogs - they don't always know when you are teasing. Threatening behavior, even if only fake, can set some of them off into protection mode.

  • Oh yeah…that looks like totally normal male basenji play in our house. We tease both boys (actually some of our girls like it too -- some don't!) into play. Especially Querk! He LOVES it....and he is very gentle, and he makes sounds that sound kind like aggression, put particular to him are play. He likes to get wrestled to the ground and comes up spinning and goofing around. He only has a few people that he feels comfortable enough to play with like that.

  • Yes, Mojo is like that too Andrea. He loves to play with Auntie Sue at the shows. :) He can get a bit rough sometimes with others, but it is all in fun to him. And he has always been so gentle with puppies.

Oh God, I remember the first time I read this, way back in 1999, when this was a listserv. I printed it off, so I could show it to people. I have it saved and still laugh uncontrollably when I read it! Thank god there are no elk in Iowa. It's hard enough to wrestle a piece of pizza away from my two, let alone a carcass.

If the dogs are having similar symptoms as in the previous years, they need to be treated ASAP! It is my understanding that many are developing the acquired Fanconi Syndrome and need to be put on the protocol. Many vets though do not have the equipment to do the venous blood gas test and get an accurate diagnosis. Emergency vets should have the equipment. Do not buy any dog treats that come from China and if the package does not state where it is from then do not buy it! Jennifer

Jaycee digs same way but she does somersaults head down over she gos first time neighbor saw it they could not beleive it. I think neighbor came over every day for a week waiting to see it again and Jaycee would do it. Yes I very much second that digging usually will cause the great B-500. Rita Jean

Owning a basenji requires a good sense of humor and a large dose of patience and a willingness to do some creative thinking to convince the basenjis what you want is really the same thing as what they want. So true, never a dull moment with these dogs

That's right I forgot about goose poop. Also flattened dead dried out birds. Mine also would eat dirt and tan bark. "What the hell was I missing in their diet" I'd ask myself. (-:

That is a great idea, but it should be an adolescent for sure (seems to be the most trying stage). My mom also really liked our dog (the look, the no bark, typical things most people like) and she quickly changed her ideas. We were telling her about the time we had to babysit another dog and the things she did to let us know that she did not like another dog in our house (she did some very naughty things)! My mom said 'wow she is really a manipulating dog'. I said, yeah they are definately not a breed for everyone.
