She is to smart for her own good!!

    Sorry I have been away so long. We doing major home improvements and we have been so busy!! I can truly tell you that Trixie amazed all of us once again!! Saturday night by husband decided we should do a crab leg and shrimp dinner. I went to the store and purchased the crab legs and shrimp. As I was in the process of making the crab legs, the shrimp that had been cleaned and put in a bowl on our kitchen table (I know what you are all thinking, what an idiot) I suddenly heard a large thump from behind me and everyone yelling Trixie NOooooooooooooooo! Well Trixie had figured out that if she pulls on that table cloth these dump people keep putting on the table the food comes towards me. Needless to say she consumed 6 shrimp (tails and all) before I could even come close to her. Luckily most of the shrimp stayed in the bowl. Yet again all I could was laugh!! She is soooooo smart!!

    What a smart girl! Have YOU learned the lesson here??? We used to have a very good friend who said "First, you have to be smarter than the dog"…I think he was referring to us, and the fact that our basenji was way smarter than we were.

    Either that or she really likes shrimp!! Ha Ha. She has to be the most spoiled dog in the world. Even after that I saw her daddy sneaking her some crab meat!! GRRRRRR! LOL But she has got to be the smartest dog we have ever had the pleasure to live with!! Smart and Devilish what a combo!!

    Too funny - it reminds me of my previous beastie's tricks. I would sit down to lunch when he would distract me by doing something he knew he shouldn't. When I got up to go see - he'd go around to the kitchen the other way (I have two entries into the kitchen) and snatch the sandwich off the table. :D

    @Basenjimamma: Basil boy..I am trying to understand what type of harness you are talking about. I have or maybe had (lost two leashes at the dogpark a few weeks ago, when son thought it fitting to fish with one and loose it, fish the first one out with the second one and loose it too..! )..any way..I have/had a leash that had a big metal loop by the collar that you threaded the leash after wrapping it around the body of the dog, so in essence it was a leash that could be used as a harness..is that what you are talking about? I think so… but my sister has never used it as a leash and it's not one straight long rope it's two long parallel ropes when it's all undone... But maybe this would serve as the same thing?

    The old adage - "A tired Basenji is a good Basenji" - comes to mind. :) Last thing we do at night before turning in is either walk ours or take her to the park. Then she gets a chew to keep her busy while we're getting ready for bed, then everyone's under the covers (she burrows). Even then, there are nights…especially if the cat is out and about being adventurous. You have my sympathy... :)

    Ahhh yes, the timeless Basenji trick! Bella does the same things, she amazes me how smart she is. Scratching the door while we are eating dinner is her favorite. She then (of course) runs back past you in pure Basenji fashion to try and steal your food!!! Ya Gotta love these 'Senjis!:D:D:D

    Mine like the Buster Cube, and similar balls that hold kibble. Also stuffed animals (garage sales, thrift stores), and the anmials that make repeating noises with a squeeze. Nicky likes baby toys, like the ones that you pull a cord and it plays music. They have favotire stuffed toys they have had for years, and others die quickly. Nicky loves to steal my shoes and eat them, my husband bought her a purse of her own at a garage sale, lovely leather. She has been slowly working on it for many months, knows it is HERS. Mine have almost never liked real dog toys. Anne in Tampa

    OMG….this film was the catalyst that started my daughter on her quest for a Basenji. For years and years I had to endure the Walter Brennan character saying, 'She's got birds. SHE'S GOT BIRDS'. I think that's why we finally caved and got our first B. We never wanted to see that movie again!!! In hind sight, the cheezy movie was MUCH easier to take than a Basenji pup. I'm looking for the book on line---just for my collection of B. ephemera.
