  • Hello, my name is Becky Blansett. My kennel name is Epic. I have been by Basenjis for 20 years now.
My first Basenji was a small red & white bitch named Sheba ( Bella Sheba Wa Umbawa FCH, CD, SC, CGC). Currently I have 4 adult Basenjis in my home, all decendents of Sheba.
Over the years the Ninjas and I have have competed in Conformation, Lure Coursing, Obedience, Rally, and Agility. Sometimes I am the teacher, sometimes my dog is the teacher. Moses ( DC Epic's In Da Nile SC,RA,NA,NAJ)and I are currently having fun training and competing in Agility.
On Feb. 21, 2008 my tri bitch, Ola (CH Epic Tri My Best SC), delivered by c-section 4 puppies by Charlie Denslow's dog Merlin ( CAN CH DC Select_Gana Incantation LCM ). There are two red girls, one tri girl, & one tri boy. Merlin is 14 years old. Ola and puppies are doing great.
Besides doing the dog thing I also enjoy riding and training horses. I have a 9 year old Anglo Arab gelding that I train for Dressage.
Wish me luck with the puppies!

Welcome Becky….. I know lots of your "kids" by way of Tracy.... how is she these days?
And amazing how many of us in the breed came from or are still into horses.... I came from Hunters/Jumpers and then Apps and Quarters...

  • Hey Becky,

    Welcome….<waving></waving>

  • Puppy pics will be coming.
Did the Hunter thing years (years) ago. Had an amazing Appy & showed Quarter horses. Did the race track, breeding farm (love foaling mares), & the Class A Arab Circuit. Love the intelegence & beauty of Arabs. Moses likes to run around in the arena while I ride. He is leary of the horses since one pushed him aside with a big hoof. I don't trust him on trail rides yet.

  • Welcome. Looking forward to hearing more from you and seeing pictures of your dogs, puppies & horses!

Lakers13 - all this will be very disappointing to you now that you are on the verge of getting your puppy but I hope you'll be taking this very well meaning advice. I don't know this breeder and so wouldn't dream to make comment but of course these other resepctable breeders do and you've heard from others' experienes with dogs affected with Fanconi. I'm sure at this time of year you'll soon be able to find a healthy puppy form a genuine breeder.

@Nicola: Hi Jenny! :D Oh what a shame. :( I was undecided on posting about SKC on the other site, I wish I had done now! Not to worry, we'll meet someday, I'm sure! And of course, I'd love to meet your gang too. I remember hearing someone saying "….Basenji cross" as I was walking by! Who'd have thought it was you! ;) Yes that was probably me lol. Roxy looked very sweet and I'm sure we will meet eventually:D

Admittedly Basenjis and sheep are a problem. Thank you for such friendly welcomes. I have had some Basenjis who I did eventually manage to 'train'!!? to be safe with sheep and could wander among them and occasionally help to herd, others (including my current pack are killers and can't be left to wander freely where the sheep are. We have a double gate system for visitors. There was a time when I could have taken them all out for walks together but now I take them 3 at a time and my whole day is taken up with exercising dogs. When I get the hang of my digital camera I'll post some piccies. Nomrdggs - I'm not sure I have kept my sanity!!!! Tanza - I have actually seen some of our original imports - and I have attempted to breed as close to the original type as I can. I bred my last litter 4 years ago.

Sorry if we sound so disagreeable … but it is so important that the health of our breed is #1 on everyones list and that everyone understands and does as much health testing as possible before breeding... especially since we have genetic problems that we can't test for, the family tree becomes our only way of knowing what we might expect... and it is only fair to people thinking about getting a Basenjis as a family companion that they know what they might expect..... Everyone should visit the BCOA Health site (www.basenjihealth.org) and learn what is being done to find genetic testing and what everyone can do to help
