Another Stormie Update

  • Stormie had a vet visit today for a blood gas test, full blood panel, and urinalysis. It went superbly!!!! Little Man is doing wonderfully on the Protocol and is still stable! No increase in bicarbs or potassium! His results are spot on! I couldn't be more pleased with how he's doing! And even better, no more vet visits for 6 months unless something drastic happens!! This is the second stable result in a row he's had so I'm proud as peacock of my little Storm - he's such a trooper!! :D

How WONDERFUL…. way to go Stormie!!!! and Lorraine for being a wonderful Basenji MOM....

    Another public service announcement...:D

Remember to strip test your Basenjis monthly.... consider the DNA test for Fanconi (will be available in March again, go to www.basenjihealth.org)), and last and MOST important, go to a responsible breeder for a pup…. do your homework..... ask for test results, do not just take their word for it.... a puppy is for life!!!

  • Thank-you, Pat! I couldn't be happier!!! :D

Oh, and 2 thumbs and 4 paws up on the P.S.A.!!!!! :)

Cooper is a rescue of unknown origin (found as a stray, in a shelter for their maximum time, then to an all-breed rescue group). His ears are somewhat offset at resting position and his tail was docked before he was found as a stray, but he otherwise looks and acts like a trindle basenji. We occasionally entertain the idea that he may be part rat terrier or something else of similar size and color, but he has to be at least 75% basenji.

My girls keep themselves pretty clean. The first heat is usually the messiest, and even then, it isn't too bad. The place I notice it the most is if they sleep in the bed, then I recommend you get a set of DARK sheets and duvet cover ;) I don't care fore the britches, because every female I have used them on got a vaginits infection because they couldn't keep herself clean.

@Rivermoon: I had heard people were doing the blood gas tests on their "probably affected" dogs. Apache had just turned 2 when I got the results and I started strip testing him immediately. I've already told my husband when he turns 3 I'm taking him in for a blood gas test…I'm wondering if I should do it earlier. I'm still strip testing Chey too even though she came back as "probably a carrier". My feeling is that until they get the actual DNA test, I'm not taking any chances. And since the strips don't last long, no sense in them going to waste….

Stores also carry those bean bags that you can heat up (humans use them as heating pads). We got Lexi one at Petsmart recently. She LOVES it. You put it in the microwave for 30 seconds and it heats up the inside. We put it in her bed and she'll go circle on it and then plop down right in the middle. It's too cute!! You might want to try that- it's a nice alternative to having an electric heating pad.
