Basenji in A Advertisement

Basenji Talk
  • Lovely basenji, but I always worry when a dog becomes popular in an ad.
I remember what happened to the dalmations after the Disney movie.
    BUT thanks for sharing this.
Who is the basenji from?? its it yours???

  • Interesting how that pup is panting…. makes me wonder about the temperature of the pavement.... people forget how hot it gets and really can and does burn their pads...

No not mine, I saw the ad in the magazine "Modern Dog" and then looked up the company. Never heard of the company before so I looked it up, it was the only pic of a basenji they had on their website

Good point, another aspect though is it could have just come from playing at a park or something, I say this more because even though its an ad, the leash is not really tight

  • Your most likely right… but with ads, we know that there could have been 100 takes to get it right.... so I don't think that this pup just came from the park.... Julie and Kathy Jones in So. Cal has had their B's in a couple of different TV shows... and they say it is really a long, long process with lots of retakes... of course this was just a picture shoot... but still I wonder... and it is something to remember when we are all out walking our kids... especially in the hot sun....

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
