OK to mix 2 dry foods??

    This may be a stupid question, but do dogs stomachs usually do ok with mixing 2 brands of food for feeding?? I really like sold gold holisitque blend, but it is low in protien, so i was thinking of doing 50% that and 50% of another brand like wellness CORE or Taste of the Wild.. any opinions??

    There shouldn't be a problem with that. Many people here mix the foods they give thir Bs. My only problem is that I am way too particular, and it annoys me when there is a significantly larger portion of the scoop being one kind of food.

    thanks! etzbseder, i was thinking the same thing, so i am going to keep the foods in their own bags and just measure them equally each time i feed her, then i know i get about 50/50 each time..

    Yeah, because it's a good idea to mix slowly into a new food when you change foods, so I just dumped the new food into my bin of old food and shook it up, to begin with, Medjai got a good mmix, now he sometimes get old food and sometimes only the new one.

    Remember that even if they are not getting exactly the same ratio at every meal it will even out over time. I keep the different food I feed separate but I don't worry about whether they get exactly 50/50 of each on any given day. One thing I like about using 2 foods is that I can adjust the ratio to match each dog's needs. I have one who gets more of the low cal food each day because she puts on weight easier while I have two others who eat almost exclusively they higher cal food.

    Let your dog be your guide, watch his coat and his waist to determine how much of each is the right ratio.

    i mix the food mias breeder gave her with the blue buffalo. eventually it will be all blue buffalo but for now its a mix.. about 25% science diet to 75% blue buffalo. her and rocky both get the same mix.. and both are fine!

    Dinner at my house for the basenjis:
    1/4 c Canidae
    1/4 c Evo
    large spoonfull of homemade muttloaf
    2 pumps of Salmon oil

    (the boyz get joint supps added in)
    they seem to be doing ok

    I also mix their food. Usually Canidae dry mixed with Merricks dry or to Blue Buffalo fish dry or canned Merricks. In any of these combinations, I haven't seen any side affects. I don't think it is necessary to combine in equal quantity, but if possible - great!.

    I mix 2 kinds of dry kibble, pour them together into the big storage bin and then mix it all up. Each scoop may not be "perfectly" mixed, but close enough!

    **I mix too! I like to change it up a little so they are not getting the same food all the time. Imagine yourself eating the same food day after day after day, tho I don't think they mind it a bit!! :o)

    Currently I am mixing Canidae with Eagle Holistic. I am reading up on blue buffalo brought home some samples and they love it. But again, mine are not picky eaters.

    I also add fish oil pills (x2), nupro, glucosamine, pet tabs plus as supplements.**

    When Taste of The Wild had the salmonella recall, due to a plant that makes it and many other dog food brands having salmonella contamination, I switched Kipawa to Acana kibble. He loves it. His coat had more shine with Taste of the Wild bison, but by adding Omega oils to his food, curry comb brushing him daily (very soft bristles), and of course petting him a lot, his coat is looking superb. :)

    We switched our 2 boys to raw from kibble about 6 months ago. The switch came because we were simply exhausted from walking them 3 times a day because they had loose stool (we don't have fenced in yard, so we need to walk them to go to the bathroom). Our vet recommended more fiber in their diet to help with loose stool. This intuitively just didn't resonate with us. Basenji are one of the most ancient breeds of dog… why on earth would more fiber be a solution to their problem (I know the theoretical why, but logically it was counter-intuitive)? We read many sources or literature on the raw diet and thought this would be a good switch for them. Again, they are an ancient breed so moving toward raw foods seemed appropriate and logical. It took that about a month for them to get really accustomed to eating raw chicken quarters, rabbit halves or pork shoulders but now they have no problem gulping their meal right down, bone and all (for those of you who don't feed raw, gulping is a normal behavior and bone is an essential part of the diet). Their digestion issues have vanished and we've even seen marked improvement in their destructive behavior. Two super happy boys now, two super happy Basenji owners!!

    @agilebasenji: To clarify, I'm not feeding my dogs differently because they are show/performance dogs; I'm feeding them differently because that is what works for the individual. Where I see feeding a dog differently because it is a performance/working dog (NOT a conformation/show dog) is where the dog is burning TONS of calories. Examples would be a working border collie/kepie or, perhaps, a greyhound that is being run many times a week (I don't know how they work things at the track), a working military/border patrol dog that is logging in miles of work daily, etc. My performance/show dogs are more weekend warriors by comparison. Training less than an hour everyday (not that I really train 7 days a week), hardly needs a special diet (IMHO). I will say I feed the basenjis more in the winter than the summer; they need more calories when it's cold. I also cook an egg on show/agility/coursing mornings, but that's because Digital is a picky boy and I need him to having something in his tummy when he's performing in agility/coursing. And it has just sort of carried over even though Miss Zest would never turn down food of any sort. Of course that's not too different from most weekends since I usually cook a big breakfast on Sat and Sun and everyone gets a bite of egg then. However, I will say I know of some people who do feed their current show dogs a better diet than the non-show dogs, which I find very sad. Well put, especially your last comment… I totally agree.... and pets/companions deserve the best we can feed them... no different then show/performace dogs...

    Welcome! We at this forum have various dogs that are show dog champions, pet store dogs, shelter dogs, puppy-mill dogs, and all are loved companions so the only 'standard' is that you love your basenji and want the best for them! My 3 are rescues, and I feed dry. I mix 2 foods because as I changed from one to another I didn't like the looser stools, but found a 3/4–1/4 mix to be perfect for all 3. They seem to really like their kibble and eat enthusiastically, though they have had the same food for several years now. I also give mine vegetables, meat, a bit of whatever we eat. As someone else said, people feel very passionately about food, but as long as you feed a high quality food that agrees with your dog, and they are healthy and glossy with solid poop, you're good! Go for the best food you can afford, it will save you bet bills down the way and your dog will be healthier and feel better than if you feed a 'junk food' full of filler.     Yeah, Jack is like that with broccoli- when he sees me pulling it out of the fridge to cook for me, he gets all excited and trembly with anticipation. He immediately sits and watches until he just can't stand it anymore and then he's HANGING TEN COUNTER SURFING!!!!!!

    I have now switched from Blue Buffalo food to Merricks wet and dry. The Blue Buffalo was hard to get, I had to buy it out of town. I get Merricks locally, and Sahara absoutely eats it better than all the rest. She is a picky eater and doesn't have a big appetite, but man oh man is she waiting when it is meal time now. She cleans her dish, a new thing for her. I am very happy, I use the dry also with about 1/4 cup of wet mixed in. I add alittle warm water to the dry (it makes it's own gravy) heat the wet alittle and add to the dry. Yes, I know Sahara is spoiled b/c I heat her wet food but what the heck, she is worth it, only takes a few seconds. Merricks is pricey $2 per can but I make it last for about 4-5 meals. Anyways, if you read the can and bag of the dry you will see what I mean, it is very good dog food and the family that has the company has been in business for 3 decades.
