Scarlett just turned 2!!!

Basenji Talk
  • My little angel, Miss Scarlett O'Hara turned 2 on Februray 15. She got a brand new harness (I found a really good brand, LUPINE, that is completely covered in case anything happens to the harness, even if she eats it like she tends to do with everything!), a small party with my old roommates american dingo who turns 2 next week, and a bunch of new chew toys. Unfortunately my camera bit the dust before I could get the pictures on here and of course they can't replace it:( . She had a great birthday and she loves her new toys!:D

  • Miss Scarlett, Miss Scarlett…Happy Birthday, Miss Scarlett!

PS Lupine is great! Nala has the purple "jelly roll" harness...and leash to match, of course!

  • Birthday photos please!

  • Happy Birthday Scarlett!

Sounds like she had a good time with her American Dingo friend. I bet she loves all of her new toys.

Sorry to hear about your camera, maybe you can take some "after party" pictures of her with her new harness once you get a new one.

I love the Lupine collars, I just gave up on them for Zahra because Chase kept eating them off her neck and I had to keep replacing them. I do still have one for Chase with the cross bones and dog paw and DH bought him one that reminds me of green ivy.

  • Yay Happy birthday! That stinks about the camera though.

  • Happy birthday Miss Scarlet!

  • Scarlett thanks you all for the birthday wishes. She loves her harness. We are currently using those awful disposable cameras so hopefully i will be able to get some post birthday pictures up soon. She looks so great in her purple harness, but she rarely gets to go out in just the harness lately casue it has been unusually cold for this area the last few weeks, so she gets to wear her football hoodie. This week had been great for her though the local schools are out and that means lots of playmates for her in the apartment complex. Most of the kids come by and play with her if she's out…. she loves it and i know it makes my life easier especially since I was just diagnosed with the flu :( .

  • @scarlettsmomma:

…I was just diagnosed with the flu :( .

Bummer. Feel better. Take care of yourself.

I have a very good friend at work who lives somewhat in the country and has lots of what she calls "barn cats" around her. When she first came to work at my office she had 2 cats, hers and her mother's, who had come to live with her, since then she has "adopted" 7 more from her yard. She started feeling sorry for them and started putting food out there for them. Her husband has finally said "no more". She is a "good" cat owner as she has spayed/neutered each cat she has adopted and keeps them inside. Now she has become involved in rescue of the rest. If she thinks it doesn't really have a home she will try to catch it, take it to the vet for a check and spaying/neutering, try to get it socialized with humans and other cats, then try to get it adopted out. She does all this with a little bit of help from a rescue organization and a break on price from her vet but she is still out of pocket quite a bit and I respect her all the more for her commitment to the betterment of the lives of these forgotten animals.:) We all wish there were more responsible cat, and dog owners, for that matter, out there like her.

I would have to agree with the others. Surgery is pretty tricky especially if the dog is on meds. Some medication is mood altering. If you could possibly wait at least a week to bring in the new dog that would be ideal. Males usually recover pretty quickly and are back to normal within a week. This will give your pooch some much needed rest & healing time. To introduce the dog I would have them meet in neutral territory some sniffing & such & afterwards I would take a nice long long long walk around your neighborhood…like 2hours at least. Let them get used to being together with you on your walks. I would even make it a routine for a while until they get used to the pack order. I would also suggest RULES from Day #1. Establish the rules of the house so both dogs understand that you're the boss & these are the rules...My rules I don't allow the dogs to hoover while I make their meals. They have to be sitting calmly until I'm done. They eat in separate crates & before I put their dish down they must sit & give me eye contact. I do the same for treats and toys...everything is given only if they sit calmly & give eye contact. There's no jumping on me EVER...if they do this they get my back which they hate because they love mom's attention :) Good luck to you :)

@jys1011: It's really sad that people can be so ignorant & generalize characteristics over an entire breed… That being said...can you imagine how owners of pits, rotties, or dobermans feel. I'm sure they get ostracized all the time for having their dogs. However, there is no need for people to be down right rude! If they want to stereotype that's their business but show a little RESPECT & above all some MANNERS! YUCK! I would have purposely said something obnoxious (Oh please lady...I only feed my dog "quality" ingredients lol :D ) but that's just ME :D I can be pretty sarcastic when people offend me on purpose. And nasty remarks against my precious pooches...oooh god help those people!! Ha, ha…love the comment. I have heard comments like the one the OP was faced with...just not that many in one day :( I do feel that more and more dog people are realizing that Basenjis aren't nasty...they are different. But it does baffle me when people need to say such rude things outloud. Maybe we don't have that kind of folks around where we course because Dr.Tracy would kick their tushies! ;)

@ChaseandZahrasmom: Let's all just be thankful that B's are small dogs and not 110 Lbs beast! At least we can pick them up and tuck them under an arm and walk away with them while training! LOL! I have to do the same thing with Zahra sometimes. Amen! I was just thinking this earlier today while trying to control my pup…
