Just a few questions.

  • So I'll be doing some Christmas shopping for Charlie in the next couple of weeks. I have a few ideas on what I'll be getting, I'm just not sure about some of the stuff.

I definetly need a traveling cage for him. I have yet to get him one, and when I took him to get his rabies shot the other day, he freaked out and tried to sit on my lap while I was driving. I'd like to get one that he will fit in when fully grown.
Approximately what size should I look for?

I'm also going to get him a new collar. I measured his neck and it was about 9 inches. I just wanted to know the approximate size an adult male's neck gets to be.

His adult teeth are starting to grow in also, so I want to start brushing them. Any recomendations on what toothpaste/ brush I should look for?

I'm also going to get him some treats, but I don't need help with that. My little fattie eats almost anything he can get ahold of.

    Thanks a bunch.

I use two different sizes for crates, one for traveling and I like the General Cage type. Here is a link http://www.generalcage.com/
I use the 200 size for travel and 300 size at home

  • The crate I have for the car is:
    http://www.petco.com/product/100529/Precision-Pet-3-Door-Deluxe-Great-Crate.aspx
and the size for up to 40lbs (3000 size). I have a MINI Cooper S - hatchback and the 3000 size fits perfect with the seats folded down and I put it width wise. When I add my second b, the 2 crates will have to go length wise, but the 3000 size should still work.

I also use the smaller crate to feed Ruby her dinner in. It is plenty comfortable and roomy for her and that was the size the breeder used as well.

For crating while at work I use the next size up (up to 70lbs - 4000 size).

I picked the wire crate for a couple of reason, one for ventilation on hot days and 2 because I thought she would be less claustrophobic in it. As well, they seem to take up less room (in a hatchback car) than the vari-kennels. The vari-kennel might be a better option if your dog gets nervous while travelling because of all the cars flying by (Ruby was well travelled before I ever got her).

  • I use just the tooth paste you can get at PetSmart

I have a VW Beetle so I can''t use a crate in it but I do use a seatbelt and harness. The one I use has a clip that attaches to the harness and then buckles into wear the belt latches, I really don't like the ones that the seat belt slides through.

Tiggy is just about 5 months and his neck is I think 11 inches. I have a adjustable martingale for him when we are not training with a gentle leader. Collars are one of those things that is hard to judge. I think the average is about 12-15 inches.

  • EL D is almost 4 and his neck is 14.

My Vet carries a toothpaste made by C.E.T. that comes in chicken or seafood flavor. It supposed to be better for tartar control.

Food aggression in dogs is normal. You have to train them to not be, and no stranger should try to take. Heck you shouldn't unless it is something dangerous. Do you have any idea where the guy got the dog from? Perhaps its breeder might help you with training. Do you know if perhaps the exgirlfriend wanted the dog and he took it for spite? http://k9deb.com/foodguar.htm

@saralars: This is off the subject of crate escape… I was told growing up that turkey and chicken bones were very dangerous for dogs. Are Basenjis different in this way too? Or am I missing something... Raw, uncooked bones are fine for any dog, not just Basenjis… it is "cooked" bones that are the problems

@Jylly18: THanks everyone for the advice, she ended up being fine, I fed her this morning and no throw-up when we got home :) I was just worried cause she has never done it more than once before. Its funny about how you said you put her over the toilet, my husband managed to hold her over the garbage when she threw up, so she looked ridiculous but at least it made no mess! HaHaHa! That conjures up a picture!

Sanitized bone should be fine… however like you said, these days I would not trust the "goo"... .... especially now that they have found that for many of the foods that "claimed" they didn't have rice, wheat, corn as the protein source, they really did.... or on the package it was listed as "protein source" that turned to be one of the above glutens...
