    Poor Miles… when we rescued him from the pound a year ago, he was skin and bones. We have since nursed him back to health and have had great success in winning his trust. This has been very rewarding.

    Of note- upon rescue, his little body had fatty cysts on it and he also has a skin tag on his lower eyelid. We have been advised by our vet that if it's not bothering him, it should be okay- unless it changes, etc. Miles will occasionally get eye boogers in the morning- shaking his head or scratching at his face to remove them. If he wakes up before I get in the shower, I make sure to wipe them from his eye with a soft tissue. BUT... I wonder if that's what did it...

    "It" being that...Saturday we noticed him squinting just a bit. We examined his eye and it appeared that his upper eyelid was a little irritated. We thought we'd see how it did over the next or so. His eye did not improve and he was still squinty so I took off work and took him to the vet today.

    They did a stain test and it showed he has a scratch across his eye as well as an abscess on his upperlid. The scratch was a surprise. But they're treating the scratch first as it's the more threatening of the two issues. We have an oral anti-inflammatory and two eye ointments to use with a return appointment for Friday. Poor little guy is just sitting there winking at me. ;)

    Oh- and this is strange-- on the way home, Miles pee'd in the car. This is the first time this has ever happened. He did pee in the crate last evening when we put them in to run errands. Sigh... a minor set back. But he's never pee'd in the car. Odd.

    Anyways... hopefully everything will work out with his eye and he won't need surgery... but... we'll be closer to knowing on Friday.

    Poor baby.

    Jazz had a scratch on her eye last summer. She looked awful for a couple of days, but the meds really do clear it up fast.

    Poor guy. Is it possible that one of the meds causes him to be thirsty, thus drinking more water, thus needing to pee more?

    Well, they hadn't given him anything when the accidents happened- he used to pee all the time when he was put in the crate- almost an anxiety thing. He's come a long way since we first got him. We considered the crate to be a tiny set back…until he pee'd in my car on the way home from the vet. But that too could have been from anxiety. He was shaking like a leaf at the vet. Poor guy. He's so big and tough at home! :( I hate to see him like this!

    Poor Miles…maybe it is possible he is stressed because his eye bothers him and that made him pee. :( :(

    I'm sure his recovery will be speedy though...the ointment for eye scratches usually heals them pretty quickly. :)

    Thanks for all the support. :) His eye seems to be open wider today. Although after I put the ointment in, he tried to scratch it!! And he screamed. AHH!

    Well, the vet wants to do surgery- they think the abscess on the top lid might be causing the scratch. He seems to be doing fine though. Thoughts?? Right now the surgery is scheduled for Monday the 11th– and it will be done at the same time as the teeth cleaning so the anesthesia is already covered. I'm still a little reluctant.

    Thats to bad it's not getting any better, I'm sorry to hear that. I can understand the reluctance about the surgery. But because it's by his eye, if it was me I'd go for it, but I'd be nervous the same time because it's the eye.

    Paws crossed though that it's quick and painless with a speedy recovery

That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

    @serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

    I'm not sure if your dog is young or a puppy but it sounds like it. Puppies are especially prone to skeletal issues such as strains or breaks because their bones are still soft and growing. Same with the muscles, they are constantly growing and susceptible to injury. Just because she has moments of play that doesn't mean she's ok- dogs have an uncanny ability to override pain signals when something else is on their minds. Others have suggested patella issues, and while I can't speak to that I know Tanza is a breeder and knows well the issues that can affect our breed, let alone knowing about identifying issues. Good that you have an Appointment, in the meantime- continue to limit jumping and running so nothing furthers the problem. Is she has lax (loose) ligaments this can cause popping and will be a lifetime concern for injury if not carefully supervised. If it were me, I would want to contact an orthopedic, so if your vet doesn't have a definite cause that is a good route to go. Might be an initial cost but in the long run save you a lot

    @eeeefarm: For what it's worth, if I was looking to adopt a dog, I would not have been put off contacting BRAT by the OP's posts, but some of the responses could certainly make me think twice about getting involved with the organization! LOL. Well first of all, a very fair post. For the end, really, go look at threads where someone attacks a breeder without contacting them. I defend them with the same passion I show to rescue. My sense of fair play get riled. But please do remember I represent BRAT no more than I represent the breeders. It is my personal opinion. As a rescue, and I have worked with many, they do a great job. It helps to be in a breed where almost any Basenji who is not a risk (ie temperament) can probably be saved by BRAT. When you work in Chow or Rottie rescue, where we have to turn down – no exaggeration -- 20 to 40 for every one we can take, working with BRAT is less traumatic. I can go to a shelter or home and know that if the dog is okay, it won't be put down. I used to walk in shelters to do evaluations on Rotties and Chows and come home crying because even if half of the dogs were stable and wonderful pets, I knew the shelter and local rescues MIGHT save 1 or 2 out of 6 to 10. BRAT stands behind those dogs, as any rescue should. They take them back if there is ever a problem. They pay fosters for medical expenses, which a lot of rescues cannot. They provide support for owners and foster homes. There is NOTHING wrong with BRAT. Of course you get many individuals and some will not be your cup of tea, sometimes someone makes a bad call. But do not judge BRAT by your dislike for me or how I post. Well actually, you might think about this. IF I were a BRAT rep, in any way official, I'd be muzzled or kicked out for expressing my VIEWS in a public forum even if I didn't give away any private info. So again, don't judge BRAT by me. And do remember that I am just as protective of anyone who gets blasted and accused who didn't get contacted first and given the opportunity to fix it.
