Anyone heard of Halo dog food?

Basenji Feeding
  • So a friend of mine is getting a puppy next month (mini schnauzer)- and she's considering a dog food called Halo. I had never even heard of this let alone seen it anywhere. She said Petco sells it.

Has anyone had any experience with it? Thoughts?

    Give me your thoughts…

  • They say meats and grains.
My b's don't do well on wheat or corn.
So, maybe this won't work for the b's.
But its hard to find out what exactly is in it.
    Me, I read the can…

  • Ingredients are not bad.. there is no corn, wheat or "by" products. But this is the first I have heard of it and don't know anyone that has used it….

  • I love the Halo company in general. I use their Dream Coat for Nik and Stormie in the winter time - it works brilliantly for dry, winter skin. I also use Halo's Spot's Stew canned food on occasion in addition to EVO, Evangers, Cal. Natural, Weruva, and Merricks cans. The pups love it!
Oh, and the ear cleaner is great, too!

    You're welcome!

  • Oh… very nice! Thanks!

i stay with the same brand, good quality kibble. thats all Hope gets with maybe a raw bone and/or bits of left over meat (such as chicken) and pumpkin to have in the evening. when i was working in a grooming salon she used to get other premium kibble (samples for our customers) as "treats" - she was none the wiser and thought "yummo!" hehe and never had issues with it :) also -when we have fostered dogs she has had some of their kibble and had no issues with eating it. im pretty lucky i dont have a fussy eater :)

I once had a pup under treatment at the Bristol Veterinary hospital. When they finally sorted the problem I was told now you'll be able to give him real food meaning kibble!1 I always feed raw and whatever but never complete dog food. Having said that it seems that over here we get a new dog food manufactutrer every month and all claim that theirs is the best!!

Hey Jeff, Thanks for the information, and PS: really enjoyed your website. All the pictures of all the dogs, but of course the ones of the Basenjis being used as they are from your litters, OUTSTANDING WORK! Wish I lived closer!

lvoss: "I highly recommend a long walk with the dogs while the food cools because mine are constantly asking, "Is it done yet? Are you sure it isn't done yet? I think it might be done." I don't have to be "cooking" anything for Gossy - she jumps around asking those same questions when I'm making anything - even when it's "my" food. :)

When my cat Spot got sick with Fatty Liver, he associated feeling ill with the food he was eating. When we were trying to get him to eat it was really hard because he would not touch anything with the same protein source he had been eating when he became ill. We ended up wandering by and Canine Caviar booth at a dog show and picking up a can of the Beaver canned food which was very high calorie and something he had never eaten which got him over the hump. Now that he is better he won't eat the same flavor or even the same brand more than about 3 days in a row. So when we get food for the month we get a couple of cans of everything, the cashiers think we are really nuts, but it is the one way we have found to keep his appetite up. So maybe instead of buying the large cans of dog food might want to look for brands that have the small cans and buy a variety for her. Even the higher protein ones, which in wet food max out at about 10% and Wellness 95% Turkey is only 8%, shouldn't be a problem especially if they are in rotation with lower protein ones.

I have been giving Sahara Blue Buffalo for months now and she loves it. She is picky about what she likes to eat, I use the dry in the blue bag, and mixed alittle wet with it. Read those labels on the cans, lots of veggies, and antioxidants for good health. I have tried many foods and she eats this the best. While I was reading the labels a lady and her husband bought one of those huge bags and I asked about the food. They told me they had lost one of their dogs to cancer and now with a new dog they only buy Blue Buffalo. If you try a new food the girl there told me to start out with only a small amount mixed into their regular food. You then over a few days mix more and more until you end up with only the new food. I do this and Sahara hardly has any bowel problems. She had never been a big eater, she weighs 22pds. and the vet told me today that her coat was beautiful and she weighs exactly what she should for a Basenji. I was happy she is healthy and sassy!!!!! Good Luck with finding a food you like.:D
