• Is there anyone who has some experience with the combination Bpup and small birds. I have 4 Agapornis birds flying free during daytime, a female Ficheri, a male Personatus and their 2 "kids".

We hope to welcome our little friend somewhere between Christmas and the end of January. Counting the days !!:)

You are putting the birds in danger if you intend to leave them all together, IMO…. I know a B owner that for the first 3 yrs of their B's life, had a Cockatiel... note the "had"... the B at 3 finally got to the bird.... so since you are dealing with a sighthound, I think you are asking for problems... maybe not as a pup... but as an adult.... I would not do it

  • I might agree with that… even tho I dont own any house birds; Mica chases the diving swallows, red-wing black-birds, and any other moving thing that flies at the dog park, to include tiny house flies at home in the summer with a delightful unbounded joy...

  • I would have to say the same thing. I also do not have a bird, but Tosca LOVES to chase them on walks, and I am sure she would attack them if not on a leash. Sorry 😞

  • I would agree to all the others. I would not dare to have birds flying around in the same room as a Basenji lives.

Basenjis, how ever they do that, really know when their chance is the biggest. And then they always get what they want. Once my Jester "picked-up" a bird right out of a bush. This did not take a second and he did not behave like hunting before this.

  • My girlfriend mentioned that I have a basenji to a coworker of hers and, apparently, he's one of those people who have heard about the breed and has passed his own judgement. He said that they are really mean dogs and he personally witnessed a show woman put her hands into a strangers basenji crate at a dog show and she got bloody. But what relates to what this thread is about is that he ALSO said that he heard that they have been known to leave their food out to entice birds and when the birds fly in to eat the food, the B snatches them out of the air. Mmmmm, delicious. 😉

  • We had a bird and Bs when I was younger. It was a Conure, which I think is about the same size as your birds. The bird lasted less than a year. The bird loved our Bassett hound and would fly down to him (We always made the Bs go outside before the conure came out). One day my sister let the Basenjis in, not knowing the bird was out. That was the end of the bird.

IMO…If you are inviting a sighthound into your house, you are religating your birds to a life of danger.

  • Oops, so it's true B's are little b's;) . Well I'll need to do some planning then e.g. when taking the B out for his daily one hour walk, my 4 little feathered piranhas can destroy the house and when I return it's vice versa:D Entertainment guaranteed !! Thank you all for your good advice and a big hug from sunny Belgium !!

  • We don't have any birds in the house, but I can say that no matter what Eli is doing when we're out in the yard he will stop to watch birds fly over and chase them. He's already had several near misses when the birds are silly enough to land in the yard.

  • Dallas stares down birds in our yard as well & if he is out in the yard will wait until they get to the bird feeder & try to catch them. It's funny to watch because it's like he is stalking his prey…Haha

  • He is…
    He's just practicing...

What in the name of Hades was someone doing putting their hands in a strange dog's (of any breed) crate?!? A "show" person should know better. All I can say, is it's a good thing that person didn't put their hand in a strange malinois' crate!

And I gotta come in with the other basenji owners, free flying birds look a lot like lunch to a sighthound.

  • I have a parrotlet. She is fully flighted and ruled the roost around here until Shelby came to live with us. Shelby is polite to Tiki while Tiki is in her cage. She has never jumped up on the cage but periodically sticks her nose in to see what's up. Tiki usually bites it 🙂 However, out of her cage Tiki is not safe. Shelby is VERY curious. I never, ever let Tiki out around Shelby. I think she would be turned into a tasty nugget for Shelby, which is NOT an option.

Wow the mental picture I have of that is seriously to funny!

Anyway, I will never forget the day Manning caught his first bird, while on a leash, and in our courtyard. He comes trotting out of the bushes with nothing but tail feathers sticking out of his mouth and the most pleased expression I have ever seen on his face. I'm sure the sight of me prying the dead bird out of his mouth while trying to control Rascal on her leash with my other hand made for a comical sight. I wouldn't trust him in the same room with a loose bird…no how no way.

  • My 15 year old Lab wants to devour my sons parakeet. He went after the lovebirds too when we had them. My mom has a ****zu that ate 3 of her love birds. The cats never had a problem with the birds. They'd walk around the house with birds on their backs like it was no big deal. The Macaw I used to have was a different story. He wanted to eat the cats, but didn't mind the dog even though the dog was scared ****tless of him.
