Chicken Jerky -Your Own

Basenji Feeding
  • I don't know; I've never made chicken jerky - have made beef and you marinate that, but it's tougher than chicken, so maybe that's why? Someone suggested trying low/no sodium chicken broth with some herbs for flavor. My furkids will eat almost anything, but they're not very good at telling what's good for them! They like tree bark, their dog-loos and hammocks, and bugs, none of which would make a healthy marinade, hee-hee.

  • I will ask someone that I know does chicken jerky … I don't think that she uses anything but water... will let everyone know

  • Here is what my friend does…

    Turkey, beef or Chicken Jerky
    Ingredient

1 pound turkey meat, sliced thin

    3 tbsp soy sauce

    1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce

    Instructions
Mix all ingredients together in a marinade dish. Mix together and add strips of turkey, chicken or beef into marinade. Marinate for 8-24 hours in the fridge, depending upon how often you shake mixture and how flavorful you want it.

Take strips out of marinade and lightly dampen with towel to dry off excess liquid. Place in dehydrator or on sheets for oven. Dehydrate till jerky is tough/crisp. Time varies based on method of dehydration so use your best judgement (12-36 hours).

  • Pat: I'm assuming your friend uses this for her dogs? Although it sounds just fine for humans–but wanted to check see. Any experience giving this to Bs?

Yes, for her dogs… (and humans too)... I have given it to my dogs.... and at shows it makes great bait for the show ring

  • Thanks for the recipe, Pat. I may be adding a dehydrator to my Xmas list for Tyler and Zoey…. :)

  • that sounds really salty…

  • @annandael:

    that sounds really salty…

Yes, but you could use low sodium Soy Sauce if you are concerned about too much salt

  • Pat-I tried the recipe-my husband came home and ate the whole thing! Then I told him it was actually for the dogs-man, was he mad that it wasn't for him! He said it was really, really good. On a side note-the dogs absolutely LOVE it.

I used the lite soy sauce.

    Arlene,
    That is too funny…..

  • A friend just told me about Bragg's Liquid Aminos for marinating your homemade jerky in. It has no salt added, and very low naturally occurring sodium.

@Saving said in Anal Gland Health Diet Adjustment (ideas?): scavenging on walks has increased though and that's quite annoying. LOL, omgosh! The amount of food tossed on the ground is astounding! And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

I know this topic is old, but I give my B freeze dried salmon bites as treats. I usually find them in the cat section
