Monkey has Fanconi :(

    I normally post on the yorkie board similar to this one because Monkey is a 3 year old male yorkie, but no one there had any experience with this disease. I googled it and found that it was more common in Basenjis, so I hope its ok if I ask questions here. We are taking him to the specialist tomorrow, and I am unsure of what to expect. I am terrified that I am going to lose my baby. Does anyone have any success stories or advice (even though he is a yorkie)? Thanks.

    If it's discovered early enough-some B's do very well on the Fanconi protocol-don't give up yet. There are others here who have more experience with the syndrome than I have-they will be able to advise you better than I could. Good luck at the vet!

    This is a hard illness, but its so much better with the fanconis support group.

    If you go to www.basenji.org, you can get information about Fanconi from Dr. Gonto that developed the protocol. Best to print it off and take it with you tomorrow… and good luck....

    Does he actually see patients or does he just do research? We are about an hour and a half from Savannah, so we could go to his office.

    He doesn't see patients… but he will talk to you or your Vet any time about Fanconi and help develop the best course of treatment with the protocol....

    I believe you should print the information about Dr. Gonto's protocal and give the information to your vet. Your vet can follow Dr. Gonto's treatment program, i.e. lab tests to run; follow-up lab suggestions; therapeutic goals; management dosing guidelines, etc. Your vet should read all the information. There is also also correspondence info: address, email and phone/fax numbers to reach Dr. Gonto.

    So sorry for you and your baby. Good luck with your visit tomorrow. I would go in armed with this information.

    I am hopeful this will be a test every basenji owner does. It gives you information so, if needed, you can be prepared. Knowledge is power and keeping our dogs with us as long as we can is the thing we should all strive for. I am so happy to live in this time. Who knows, maybe in the next 10 yrs, fanconis will be like rickets…we just don't see them.

    I am sorry to hear of your dog's possible Fanconi Affected status. I agree completely with Terry about waiting on the thyroid panel until he is stabilized on the protocol… and making sure if he does have a UTI, getting that under control as well. When you join the Fanconi list, be prepared that you will get tons of information, some of it conflicting. You will need to sort out what is best for your dog and you and his health. Do the protocol and hope for the best. Some dogs do very very well on it. Some do NOT tolerate it at all. I have two littermate boys with Fanconi, the one on the protocol was sick from day 1 and his body hated the protocol. His brother was sick on it, so we came to the conclusion that a better diet could make him feel better... and it did. He lived 4 years after diagnosis whereas the one sick on the protocol lasted about 2 years. Each dog is different. I lost my old Benny to Fanconi last fall and it was the most devastating thing I have been through in my life... I have helped my dog owners with their affected dogs and will continue to do so with the last few that have Fanconi Syndrome.     @etzbseder: Thanks, I've seen that before, but forgot about it. After looking at that, it shows that my answer would be: Clear pups ONLY means that neither parent is affected, and that does not change with multiple clear pups. The only thing that shows any determination of the parents is a test of the parent themselves (or if their grandparents are clear). correct. The more clear pups (with no affecteds or carriers) you had from the breeding of the same two animals, the more LIKELY it is that the parents are clear…but it certainly would not be a for sure.

    @sharronhurlbut: As the test is easy and doesn't hurt the dog, why not test them all? Exactly… and hopefully before the end of the summer we will have a test for Fanconi....
