Adding basenji as puppy playmate

Basenji Talk
  • We got the chance to dog sit my daughters Basenji, while she is off on vacation. It has been a pretty good experience so far. Day 3!!! Solomon is 7 month old and Sadie is 3 year old. They have done very well together although it is difficult to tell if they are playing are trying to kill each other!!
If this works out I am in the market for another basenji because, he has been very happy to have a friend to play with. I told my daughter I woulud just keep her's and as you might imagine that was a diffiant No.

  • I have been very pleased with the experience as well. I am a true believer in "multiples have more fun" idea.

  • DITTO. Dash loves having a companion. We are looking in to a rescue Basenji right now. That would make 3 but what's one more?

  • ha ha dash, you say that now but the basenji rescue bug will bite you and you will adopt another and another until there are curly tails everywhere:D

  • I don't have a problem with that. The issue may be that BRAT won't adopt to us since we have cats.

  • Remember there are other places to find a rescue. Many of the regional clubs do rescue (you can find them all listed at www.basenji.org) and also there is an "adoption" section of The Basenji Mag on line (www.thebasenji.com)

  • Tanza, thanks for the reminder. I remember seeing that somewhere and forgot. I emailed all of them and hopefully they will have something for us.

  • funny it seems we have all been bited with the B multiple bug. I am now on every possible (known to me) list and am very eagerly awaiting a reply from somewhere nearby. Reading back my earlier posts I would never have imagined #2 especially when there were times when I thought (for only half a megasecond) that I couldn't deal with Champ but with the help and support from everyone here on the forum I've made it through and now have the ultimate Basenji fever!

  • Luzmery- this is who I contacted and got a response from TODAY! He said he had about 27 dogs it is just him and 2 other people. I know he is in Indianapolis but maybe he can get you in contact with someone closer.

Tanza, Thank you again for this referral. I didn't expect such a quick response. We had originally wanted to foster but BRAT had said that there were very few dogs in this area so we were looking to adopt. He said he has enough dogs we should be able to foster, which is what we originally wanted.

  • Thanks Dash for your suggestion. i will send him an email. Thanks to everyone for your referrals. I just received an e-mail from someone not too far from us that has a B female who seems just perfect for our family. Wiah us luck..and good luck to you.

Always say, opposites are best... are these littermates? Even with opposites, many times littermates are a problem... as they competed as babies for everything.... and we say, it works till it doesn't... Is there a reason you want two of the same sex? and you need to be prepared that if they don't get along you will need to separate... I was very lucky but very concerned about the two bitches I got at the same time, 2wks in age apart... I looked at the temperament of both before deciding... and LUCKED out... I have one very confident bitch and one not.. but they have meshed well together with the confident bitch not concerned with being "top" in the house, she knows she is but doesn't need to prove it.... still it took till my one bitch had puppies to prove to me that she was OK in her skin and have remained friends since... even with her puppies. IMO (in my opinion) unless you are looking to breed at some point, not worth the chance... been the other route too... and it is NOT fun

When we say responsible for the dogs forever - we do really mean forever. I have animals returned to me when they were 9 years old because of significant family issues or death of the owner - I currently have a 12 year old and a 7 year old that now live with me. Think about what that means - because even those of us who are prepared for that - really are never prepared for the impact on our families houses and other dogs. You say you want to keep 2 - be advised that the everyone hanging out together in basenji world is NOT the norm. Most can have 1 male and 1 female - if you are planning on keeping 2 - you may have a problem - not right away but eventually you are likely to do so. I am not sure that I remember who or where Chaos came from but fanconi testing and eye testing for PRA would be critical as well as thyroid screening. What titles does she have - is she a fast as the wind Field CH or Obedience or rally or conformation CH. That would allow you to have evidence that she has characteristics that are valuable to the breed as a whole and quite frankly if all you want are a couple more basenjis - there are many many out there that could use a forever home. In any event - think about it - it's not as easy as you think - if you are going to do it right - and finding good homes is also not as easy as you think. You may not have the experience in weeding out puppy mills who might want your pups and living where you do - you are in the midst of some that do produce basenjis.

Hi sackman and welcome to the forum. I highly recommend both Tanza Basenjis and Kinetic Basenjis. You won't go wrong with either one of them. :)

I would have to agree with the others. Surgery is pretty tricky especially if the dog is on meds. Some medication is mood altering. If you could possibly wait at least a week to bring in the new dog that would be ideal. Males usually recover pretty quickly and are back to normal within a week. This will give your pooch some much needed rest & healing time. To introduce the dog I would have them meet in neutral territory some sniffing & such & afterwards I would take a nice long long long walk around your neighborhood…like 2hours at least. Let them get used to being together with you on your walks. I would even make it a routine for a while until they get used to the pack order. I would also suggest RULES from Day #1. Establish the rules of the house so both dogs understand that you're the boss & these are the rules...My rules I don't allow the dogs to hoover while I make their meals. They have to be sitting calmly until I'm done. They eat in separate crates & before I put their dish down they must sit & give me eye contact. I do the same for treats and toys...everything is given only if they sit calmly & give eye contact. There's no jumping on me EVER...if they do this they get my back which they hate because they love mom's attention :) Good luck to you :)
