Adding basenji as puppy playmate

    We got the chance to dog sit my daughters Basenji, while she is off on vacation. It has been a pretty good experience so far. Day 3!!! Solomon is 7 month old and Sadie is 3 year old. They have done very well together although it is difficult to tell if they are playing are trying to kill each other!!
    If this works out I am in the market for another basenji because, he has been very happy to have a friend to play with. I told my daughter I woulud just keep her's and as you might imagine that was a diffiant No.

    I have been very pleased with the experience as well. I am a true believer in "multiples have more fun" idea.

    DITTO. Dash loves having a companion. We are looking in to a rescue Basenji right now. That would make 3 but what's one more?

    ha ha dash, you say that now but the basenji rescue bug will bite you and you will adopt another and another until there are curly tails everywhere:D

    I don't have a problem with that. The issue may be that BRAT won't adopt to us since we have cats.

    Remember there are other places to find a rescue. Many of the regional clubs do rescue (you can find them all listed at www.basenji.org) and also there is an "adoption" section of The Basenji Mag on line (www.thebasenji.com)

    funny it seems we have all been bited with the B multiple bug. I am now on every possible (known to me) list and am very eagerly awaiting a reply from somewhere nearby. Reading back my earlier posts I would never have imagined #2 especially when there were times when I thought (for only half a megasecond) that I couldn't deal with Champ but with the help and support from everyone here on the forum I've made it through and now have the ultimate Basenji fever!

    Luzmery- this is who I contacted and got a response from TODAY! He said he had about 27 dogs it is just him and 2 other people. I know he is in Indianapolis but maybe he can get you in contact with someone closer.

    Tanza, Thank you again for this referral. I didn't expect such a quick response. We had originally wanted to foster but BRAT had said that there were very few dogs in this area so we were looking to adopt. He said he has enough dogs we should be able to foster, which is what we originally wanted.

    Not allowed on the couch was the first rule we made and the first we broke, I only made it to please the hubby, but know I wanted snuggles and cuddles so not sad it went out the window. I just wasn't willing to spend sooo much time correcting Kaiser over the rule that I knew he was going to win and seemed to be wrong as he is all about human contact and just glad he loves to sleep in his crate and the bed rule never got broken. Knowing how Kaiser yearns to have human contact and how he likes to be up high I don't think I would have made it a rule in the first place, but if you stick to it and give your puppy a comfy, warm, high, sunny spot and lot's of cuddles it may learn in time to love the spot you have chosen for it, but will say good luck with that.     Markie, I think when adding a basenji to an existing household, it is most important to just get out and visit with lots of breeders and meet their dogs. Some families of basenjis get along great with other dogs and others are not as good. You really just need to be up front about your expectations and do some visits to see how the dogs are. That way you find a breeder with the temperaments you like and they know what you need in a pup and can match the pup with your household.

    When we say responsible for the dogs forever - we do really mean forever. I have animals returned to me when they were 9 years old because of significant family issues or death of the owner - I currently have a 12 year old and a 7 year old that now live with me. Think about what that means - because even those of us who are prepared for that - really are never prepared for the impact on our families houses and other dogs. You say you want to keep 2 - be advised that the everyone hanging out together in basenji world is NOT the norm. Most can have 1 male and 1 female - if you are planning on keeping 2 - you may have a problem - not right away but eventually you are likely to do so. I am not sure that I remember who or where Chaos came from but fanconi testing and eye testing for PRA would be critical as well as thyroid screening. What titles does she have - is she a fast as the wind Field CH or Obedience or rally or conformation CH. That would allow you to have evidence that she has characteristics that are valuable to the breed as a whole and quite frankly if all you want are a couple more basenjis - there are many many out there that could use a forever home. In any event - think about it - it's not as easy as you think - if you are going to do it right - and finding good homes is also not as easy as you think. You may not have the experience in weeding out puppy mills who might want your pups and living where you do - you are in the midst of some that do produce basenjis.

    my thanks to all of you for your wonderful advice - i will take everything that you all have said into consideration before making a decision - however my wife and i have decided that our grieving over the loss of our 4 year old is not over yet so we are going to delay any decision until we can get past this point - with that in mind, and realizing how difficult these discussions have been for me, i am going to unsubscribe myself from this site until such time as we can come to better terms with our situation - again, my thanks to all of you for trying to help - Manny
