Tampa Dog Park

Basenji Talk
  • This past Sunday we ventured over to the Tampa West Park dog park to meet up with the pack again. Cairo (6month brindle boy) has been neutered and has had 2 rambunctious weeks to heal and drive Caesar (6yr red boy) and myself crazy.

This dog park is huge. It was a sunny hot Florida day and we enjoyed 3 hours with 8 basenjis and their owners under a shaded tree and the basenjis ran around and played in the dirt.

Cairo has met with the pack, which is typically 8-12basenjis, about 3 times before this visit. The first visit(14weeks) he could do no wrong and all of the basenjis let him chew and jump. He stayed with the female basenjis and owners as the boys ran and played all over the park.

The second time we went all of the basenjis were friendly. He recognized them as his pack and tried to make friends staying close to the owners and female basenjis. He was quickly introduced or put in his place by a few snarfs from the alpha female and male that were watching the action and didnt want to play. No sweat, Cairo is just learning the ropes and Caesar sits back and supervises.

Yesterday we went back and Cairo ran in and started running with the pack in general. There is a young female in the group that hasnt come into her snarfy dominatrix side yet and Cairo fit in well.

Several of the Macpac basenjis dug holes to cool off. All you could see were their heads!! Hopefully someone can post pics?

    Basenji attendance:
    Nicki - Alpha female
Kali - alpha female back up
    Eshi - young female
    Eddie - relaxed man
    Topper - alpha male
Caesar - quiet and Nicki's boyfriend at times
    Cairo - baby boy
Jack - the entertainer and runner

I hope I spelled all of their names right.

If anyone is in the Tampa area and would like to see basenjis or wants to bring their to the park and meet the pack, the more the merrier!!

  • These are very nice pictures! Looks like all are having a wonderful social time! You're lucky to have found a nice place to meet with some good dog friends. Cairo is growing up and getting more handsome! Thanks for sharing your day.

  • The dog park pics are great! Makes me wish I had a basenji meet up where I live!

  • Thanks guys, I will try to post more from the next meet. The Macpack Donald is the photograper extrodinaire…..

They just opened a new park built on a retired landfill that has not one but TWO areas for dog parks, so when one gets run down, they'll open the other and close the first to allow grass to regrow, etc. She-Ra loves it, too, because unlike the other parks this one is wide open and has TONS of running room. Dream come true for us, but it'll still get hot in the summertime, I'm sure.

She-Ra goes to our local park at least twice a week. It's a nice area with a sectioned-off area for smaller dogs or if a dog is having "behavior issues" you can take it in there if there's no other dogs. A lot of "regulars" maintain law and order if a dog owner is getting out of line (allowing their dog to bully, etc.). She enjoys it. Runs in to do her business really quick. Sniffs everyone, but hates it when other sniff her. There'll be the occasional "give me space" growl if too many dogs get around her at once and sniff. Spends most of the time sniffing and standing in the middle of the park staring like a statue at something. Then you get the eventual chase going - those are always fun because the other owners are like 'Oh, She-Ra's gonna get caught!' and I grin and say 'No she's not.' as she runs circles around all the other dogs. I love watching my dog run…it's poetry in motion. After about an hour she's pooped and ready to go back home. We've had very few incidents with her that haven't been swiftly fixed. She seems to enjoy going quite a bit, and we're making friends with some of the regulars...I guess we're fairly regular now by this point as well.

Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!

When Cairo was coming into his manhood which was around the later part of his 4th month he began to try to dominate every dog (male or female) at the dog part. We were in the smaller dog pen, so there were plenty of smaller dogs for him to dominate. I recognized the behavior (not full mounted, but the arm on the back) and we didnt go back until he was fixed. Major difference. I would suggest going to a Petsmart and doing your normal commands there. It is so busy and loud there that you can practice getting his attention. Having an intact dog at the dog park is a big challenge. You dont want to take treats into a dog park in case some one else's dog is food aggressive and you have to feel confident you can pull his attention away from his interest when you want. I would think any kind of training that included socializing with other dogs would be a big help.
