  • That is great…. sounds like he is fitting right in... but beware... the honeymoon will be over soon and he will like any well respecting Basenji, test the water... so be ready...ggggg

  • Yes, I am on guard. Just the look on his face seems to portend evil events…^..^

  • very nice pics. He seems to be getting settled.

  • Awwww he's absolutely adorable!! My two are not allowed to run around the house. They are allowed in the room that I am in only. Just in case they want to get into any mischief. If I'm in the kitchen they are too & I close off the rest of the house (YES we have a house full of baby gates  :D lol) but this works for us to make sure they stay gooooood basenjis :D

  • Congratulations on Rowdy!! He is adoreable. My basenji mix loves to play on the bed too!!

  • Awww how cute!!

  • We got a puppy recently and got a blue dog just like that. She loves it and our two 6 year Basenjis do too.

  • My friend and I loved that commercial on tv with the doxie who loves his doxie toy like the blue dog toy, so my friend bought one for Rowdy. I imagine there are lots of long stuffed toy doggies out there being played with by many different breeds and mutts! So cute.

That's a good idea about having basenjis in the room you are in only. Our house is small and has an open type design in living room/kitchen area where we are most of the day. I guess I should close off the bedrooms.

Rowdy has discovered that the afternoon sunshine comes in by the patio door and he likes to lie on the carpet there in front of the door. My husband had to push him to move so he could go outside, and Rowdy got upset and growled. I hope that doesn't mean something serious?

  • Some (most) Basenjis don't like being interrupted when resting. Growling is typical. I think the best way teach Rowdy to move is to have a treat of value in hand and teach a "move" command. Make sure Rowdy smells the treat and when he moves for it, treat and praise. That "move" or "off" command will be handy for when he hogs the sofa and/or bed too. :) The trick is to be consistent with the treat-praises so you know he understands what the command means.

  • That's typical..cranky basenji talk. They protest & it's normal but not acceptable. So I do the same thing Jill says. We teach our dogs what we want them to do using positive methods like FOOD. What basenji can resist food!

  • Congratulations! Rowdy is a cutie. I know you will feel blessed every day you get to have Rowdy in your life and you will soon be wondering how you got by without him.

We had a toy similar to your blue dog, it didn't last very long before it was destuffed.

  • Rowdy doesn't want to go outside. He dances just out of my hand's reach when I go to grab his collar. He thinks we are playing, while I'm getting more irritated! Even a treat doesn't tempt him. Grrr.

  • So walk out on him…just walk out of the house & leave him behind. He'll coming running to the door looking for you.

  • I agree. It sounds like he is playing. They hate to be alone. But be patient. Walk outside have a seat and turn your back to him. He will come out in time.

  • He comes out when I go out, but he doesn't go out when I want him and Jenny to go out together without me. I think with patience he'll learn that he will always get to come back in, so he might as well go out for a few minutes…I hope.

  • ha ha…nope he won't go out if YOU are inside...get it? YOU are his favorite human :D :D

  • Haha, yes I get it! He is so funny. He also has my trick figured out where I step outside to make him go out and then step back in real quick. He doesn't like that and can't be fooled now. Smarty.

I used Wisdom Panel for my assumed Basenji mix. It showed no basenji at all. My boy is 32 lbs and short hair. His DNA says he is 25% American Eskimo 12.5% Boston Terrier 12.5% Chow Chow 12.5% German Shepherd 12.5% Miniature Schnauzer 25% Breed Group-Sporting, Herding, Hound, Terrier. Having owned basenjis all my life I would say my boy has basenji in him by his personality and behavior regardless of what his dna says!!

I love to watch my girls play like that - although since one of them is a basenji mix, I do hear growling, whining, yodeling, and all manner of wierd noises from Gemma. Like yours, Shaye fight/plays silent but deadly! Your pictures are wonderful. Thanks for posting.

@Lovelace: Really? What ones? I don't know of any that have all the criteria? I've done extensive research on the breeds, and i'm curious I don't recall any. I think Pat means lots of dogs have one or more of these traits. Those three things all together MAY be an indication that the dog does have some basenji in it…but not for sure. Because the dog could be a boxer/husky mix...and end up with right color/markings, pointy ears, a curly tail, and have wrinkle on the forehead (lots of dogs have wrinkles around the face). Rat terriers are notorious for looking like Basenjis...but the shape of their head is slightly different, and the breed was founded using some Basenji way back. Another thing to remember is that after several generations of mixing, all dogs tend to go back to a natural or pariah dog shape...squarish, brown, pointy ears, slightly curled tail...that is just the natural phenotype of "dog"...so a dog might end up looking Basenji-ish even if there is no actual Basenji there. I am not refering specifically to the OP...that dog does look like it might have some Basenji in it..or Rat terrier...but it is REALLY hard to say for sure. It doesn't matter really, because everyone is welcome here...Basenji, mix, B-look alike...welcome...

@kiroja: LOL Kim, I had one of those too and Mojo learned to pull the string as well! Soo funny how they entertain themselves. :) Two problems though, first he would tend to chew up the plastic ring that held the string so couldn't play with it no more. And second they remade them with solid tabs for pulling which wasn't easy for the dog to grab and it was very difficult to find replacements with the original plastic ring type handle that he could hook his tooth through. I wish I would have made a video, that was priceless. Thanks! Hihihi :D They do that here exact the same… break the plastic ring.. We buy a new one the next time we see it.. The price here is around 1 dollar i think.. @kiroja: Ok, I found another good one! [yt]IUbW2i0Mc7k[/yt] This was a different type of cat toy. Mojo LOVED playing with it! It was a little electronic mouse that spun around, lighted up, and taunted the dogs. :) It was motion activated so he could keep himself occupied for a while. Although the noise did get a little annoying. lol After a while he would start chewing it, so I'd have to take it away and save it for another special moment. :) He got real good at grabbing it by the tail and whipping it around the room. Once he came a little too close to smashing it through the tv, it definitely had some weight to it! I think I used to buy them for around $6 at WalMart, so some fun and cheap entertainment. lol This one is so great! B's are so very smart!!!! Our Buana learned it from the sister of Hailey (that stayed with us for 4 months) and Chafuko learned it from Buana. Hailey learned it from Chafuko!
