First long walk…what a success!

    Much to my surprise, when I took Zuri out to the front yard ( it was raining)on a leash in hopes that she might pee, she decided that she was in the mood for a stroll. She hapily walked in the puddles down the street. I was not prepared to go for a walk in the rain, had my flip flops on and no jacket but I wasn't going to miss an opportunity to take the wee one out in the rain if she was in the mood….so out we went and wet we got! Then this morning, I decided if I had a basenji that wasn't afraid of the rain, we were goint out again...and she was great though it was only a short walk both times.
    Today, I took Zuri for a long walk and what fun we had. She was awesome with all the other dogs we encountered on our walk (4 of them, all shapes and sizes from a chihuaua to a golden retriever) She walked well on the leash most of the time and responded well when I stopped as she pulled the leash, she came back to me. She had no clue that I was totally lost or at least she never let on that mamma was a bad navigator! Anyhow, we had a blast and boy did she sleep when we got home!!! Feeling good about how well she is learning already..oh, and she now knows how to 'sit' and almost knows the 'down' command.

    I don't know if I can dub her a Basenji that likes the rain yet…but i am hoping so. Keep in mind that the rain in the back yard is VERY different from the rain on the streets and in the park....or so she seems to think because there is no way I can get her to go out back without me standing in the rain with her.

    We made the mistake of getting a cheap pen with horizontal wiring ($35). Then we got this as recommended by Michelle Lennon ($99). He can't get out of it, though for several weeks he could squeeze through. At 13 weeks, he's too big for that now. Regalo 192-Inch Super Wide Adjustable Baby Gate and Play Yard, 4-In-1, Bonus Kit, Includes 4 Pack of Wall Mounts Regato 192" gate I also recommend her "Dream Dog" course. I trained 9 years ago with a local pro, but this is more detailed and better organized. Takes a month for a person to get through the course, worth every penny. She also offers a lot of free content, and if you go to the "pro" level for another $75 per month, one can access three weekly zoom meetings with her and co. and get questions answered 24/7 via their facebook interface. For what one gets, it's a real bargain. I used it for a month and found it very helpful. How to Train a Dream Dog To be sure, I don't agree on every detail. For example, I do no-leash walks in woods; they don't recommend that. Also, her course is not really designed to train an active "outdoor" dog, but more for an "indoor" dog. She opposes electric fences and doggy doors. I've had great experiences for 9 years with both and will continue to use them (started electric fence training last week and making good progress). But otherwise, her course lays out solid foundation work. She trains you to be a puppy trainer and provides all the real-time help you could need. Happy training!

    Very cool, nice job! That bird wouldn't stand a chance in my house lol…. What does your B do when you are outside and you come across a bird?

    Dan is right. Most people do not know what constitutes good manners with dogs. I can say from experience that AJ feels more secure when he's leashed and will act more confidently. Maybe I'm his security blanket. However, when people allow their animal to rush another that is leashed and try to say the dog is just being friendly need to review Dog Etiquette 101 and try again. I think the main point here is to underscore the need for people to leash their animals until they are in a safe area for them to run. That woman in the business park is asking for trouble letting her dogs off lead. She is lucky all Buddy wants to do is play. Maybe one day she will run into one of those Pit Bulls or Rotties or Aussie Cattle Dogs who will not put up with her dogs' behavior and correct it. Of course, then she will complain loudly to anyone who will listen and try to get a law passed to ban whatever breed of dog "attacked" hers when it rushed a dog on a leash.

    ROFL ROFL LOL LOL LOL LOL…this is the FUNNIEST story I've ever heard in my life!!! LOL LOL :) Hahaha! I must say that Storm was quite disappointed to see that my "treasure" was a twig - I think he was hoping for a squirrel or a bunny or something a little more animated! ;) :) :D And my neighbors are NOT dog people, sooooo you know darn well they think I ought to be in a straight jacket! :)
