  • Hi all,

My name is Karen Hyland from South Australia, and I have Mzalia Basenjis. I got my first basenji in 1994, and bred my first litter in 1996.

Over the years I have bred 14 Australian Champions and I have owned and bred All Breeds and Specialty Best in Show winners.

2007 has been an exciting year for Mzalia. The biggest thrill to date, was winning Best in Show at this year's Basenji Club of Victoria Specialty Show under Mr Glenway Dymock (formerly of Australia, now based in England), with my gorgeous girl Aus Ch Mzalia Private Dancer (aka Tina). She is the girl featured in my avatar. We also had our first exports to Norway with Mzalia Making Headlines (Tasha) and Mzalia Making Mischief (Zally).

In addition 12 of my dogs were recently DNA tested with the new Fanconi Linkage test, and was thrilled when all 12 of them came back this week as "Clear/Normal".:) :)

I have a website for my kids at http://www.mzalia.com. As I have recently setup my own business, and returned to tertiary studies, I have not been able to update my site for a little while - but that is on my agenda for over the Christmas/New Year period :D :D

Another project I am working on, is converting the Basenji Club of New South Wales Pedigree Books into an electronic format. Our aim is to have it available for the 40th Anniversary Show in October 2008.

Below are a couple of photos of my 2007 keepers, Mzalia Making Waves (Tyler) and Mzalia Making Whoopee (Whoopee). Tyler is a multiple Baby in Group winner, and Whoopee is a Baby in Group and Baby in Show winner.

I look forward to dropping by whenever I can.

Please research the health problems in Basenjis especially Fanconi Syndrome! There is a DNA cheek swab test for it and I believe it only costs $75. If your dog has not been tested and is over two years old, she needs to be strip tested for glucose in the urine monthly until you have the DNA test done and obtain the results. Untreated Fanconi Syndrome will kill a dog! Here is a webpage that explains health problems in Basenjis: https://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=155&Itemid=292 Jennifer

Welcome-Basenji's=two year olds (I want, I will get what I want, you can't make me, phthhht on you, did I do that?) Yeah, it's never THEIR fault, it's always yours. Unfortunately, I've been in your situation until it didn't work anymore and placed the one girl with my son and his girlfriend.

Admittedly Basenjis and sheep are a problem. Thank you for such friendly welcomes. I have had some Basenjis who I did eventually manage to 'train'!!? to be safe with sheep and could wander among them and occasionally help to herd, others (including my current pack are killers and can't be left to wander freely where the sheep are. We have a double gate system for visitors. There was a time when I could have taken them all out for walks together but now I take them 3 at a time and my whole day is taken up with exercising dogs. When I get the hang of my digital camera I'll post some piccies. Nomrdggs - I'm not sure I have kept my sanity!!!! Tanza - I have actually seen some of our original imports - and I have attempted to breed as close to the original type as I can. I bred my last litter 4 years ago.
