Merricks, Sold Gold, or Wellness

  • Hello- I want a dry food that Diego will actually like eating. He is on Canidae now and doesnt seem to like it very much. Out of Merricks, Sold Gold, or Wellness- what would you suggest? Anyones dog really like any of those?

  • I have to feed one of my dogs Merricks and the other one Solid Gold. They're all great foods. It all depends on price & preference (yours :) ha)

I started feeding both of mine Merricks dry & wet (not too much wet or else it gives them the runs). But then I found out I have to feed C3PO Solid Gold Barking at the Moon because of his many many many allergies.

So Topaz still gets Merricks which I like :)

  • I feed Solid Gold Hund-N-Flocken (Lamb and Rice), I know that Annandael feeds her Basenji's Solid Gold MMillennia (Beef and Barley). I also when Reggie starts showing bordom in the Hund-N-Flocken I'll get him the Wolf King (Bison and Salmon) it's advertised for larger dogs but has almost identical nutritional ratings as the HNF. And I just ordered a bag of the SG Holistique Blendz (Fish and Oatmeal), I know he does like the Barking at the Moon (Salmon/Beef and Potatos), but its a little more pricey than the rest $52 for a 33lbs bag compared to $39 for HNF

  • Thank you both for your input!

  • Sahara love Merrick's Grammy's Pot Pie, dry and wet. I give her dry with a little water to make gravy and add about 1/2 cup of the wet. She eats it up and loves it better than all the rest I have tried. It is natural with no perservatives, and the company has been in business for many years, and it is family owned and all have their own furbabies. I also give her the other flavors of Merrick's for variety, mainly the wet.

  • Ziggy and Zoe get Merrick's Wilderness Blend. I cover the dry food with some water and heat it in the microwave for 7 seconds. They love it!

  • i'm torn, they all seem like good foods! i'm getting samples of solid gold and wellness, and i have a small bad of merrick. so i'll let diego decide! thanks everyone!

We have fed Solid Gold before. We think it was the Barking at the moon version. Its great food but like most of the good foods its more expensive.
  • Well, I'll never do THIS again!

Fran, dogs don't really digest whole veggies. One thing I learned many moons ago on barf lists, if you want your dog to fill up, serve in chunks. You want your dog to get any benefit … smash them up. If you want to check it for yourself, give your dog several chunks of different veggies, check the poo. Often what you find looks pretty much what goes in. That said, mine love apples. USUALLY they chew them up. I got up to Cara throwing up 2 days ago-- on big apple chunk and liquid. Sigh. Guess I'll slice much smaller.

I just got a call from the vet on Buddy's blood panel results and all looks good. I'm going to continue with the diet I'm feeding him since it seems to be working. His thyroid test last June from Dr Dodds also looked good. If your Basenji is experiencing any skin, coat or digestion problems try eliminating all grains including rice and see how it goes.

You can get Fresh Digest at Petco. Prozyme you can order from Drs Foster and Smith online. Both are probiotics. The size sold at Petco is about 100 servings.

@DiegosMom: does anyone use Wellness 95% chicken, beef, or venison wet food with their dry food?? i usually use canidae wet and dry mixed with some homemade chicken (diego is a picky eater). i'm getting sick of making and shredding chickens and want a wet food he will eat with nothing added to it. my local store has wellness wet food onsale, so i was wondering if anyone has any feedback or opinions on it?? thanks!! Wellness is OK.. but if you want something that they will dive into… (usually) it is EVO duck, rabbit or venison..... you usually have to order it special by the case.. but the small cans work well... at least they do for me with my elders.... I make my own chicken ..... and don't mind... BUT I will qualify that I only do it for the elders... my 16+ in renal failure deserves whatever she wants... other then that... you learn to eat what is given or you don't eat... and I have never had a problem. That said, I mix alot of different "stuff" in their food, right now I am using Natural Balance Potato and Duck for all... and I mix with different things, veggies... cooked meat... yams... eggs...
