Do B's COOK??

Basenji Talk
  • My basenjis are cooks!!

After our walk this morning my husband fed the little monsters & then he left them in the kitchen & went to work. I am usually done getting ready for work about 15-20 minutes after he leaves. I keep a baby monitor on just to listen for mischief in the kitchen.

This morning it was WAAY too quiet  so I went down before I was done just to check in on them. And what do I find????…the OVEN door is opened up & the stove top pilot was ON     These little brats could have set our kitchen on fire!  Either that or they were trying to bake a cake!

Of course they were quietly sitting near the gate when they heard me coming down the stairs pretending they had nothing to do with this. But the evidence proved otherwise...teeth marks on the stove top knobs & teeth marks on the side of the oven door. YUP THEY WERE GUILTY AS CHARGED!!

Does this mean I can't leave them unsupervised for a MINUTE??

  • OMG! I can't believe it…I've heard of Border Collies opening the fridge and stuff...but WOW! Thank goodness all was okay...

  • Their little basenji brains made the stove=food connection. Pretty clever. But their plans were foiled when they figured out that you gotta put something in there to make good stuff come out. That's step two and you can bet they're working on that one!

This made me laugh LOL LOL :D…despite my anger!

Truth is I can't stay mad at them for long.

  • Oh my gosh! I read this and laughed (and covered Stormie's eyes so he doesn't get any ideas! haha!). What smart critters you've got JYS! Loved the story!! :D

  • It is amazing how smart they are, but I worry that not only could the house have burned, but they may have been hurt as well. Anyone of us who has kids knows it can take just a millisecond. (I guess we all have our B kids.) When things are just too quiet, I go hunting too!

You can find a lot of puppy collars at thrift shops for pretty cheap - would never pay full price for one. I'm getting mine at 14 weeks and was told that 8-12 inches was what was being used - then at 4- 6 months graduate to 10-14 inch collar.

We have actually been really lucky in this regard. Our backyard is enclosed by a picket fence reinforced with chicken wire around the bottom. It was here when we moved in last year. Cyrus has never tried to dig or climb out of the fence at all. We are actually hoping to replace our fencing with vinyl this year, so it will be even more secure. Cyrus does not have access to the outdoors when we are not home, however. He is too clever for his own good, and we worry about what he would do if left to his own devices!

We use the seat belt/harness type for both of them. They're in the back and stay put. They just curl up and sleep.
