Little bums….

Basenji Talk
  • Ok, so I have been thinking about my two wonderful basenji boys all morning and have to share this picture of them this morning. It is really stupid, but really cute.

Cairo (7 month old, brindle) and Caesar (6yr old, red) flollow me around in the morning when I get ready for work. That is their thing. I get out of the shower and they lick my leg lotion off, they get in the way when I am doing my exercises, they just hover near mom.

Cairo is notorious for being a "mini me" of Caesar. Caesar does something, he will watch and when Caesar leaves immitate him to a tee.

When I am in the bedroom dressing, Cairo tends to put on his "Scrappy Doo Persona" (Scooby Doo's little feisty friend) on and begins to look for loose things on the floor to grab and run.

He loves business cards, receipts, and socks which sometimes can be found. Well, this morning, there was nothing to grab. So Caesar, the mature adult decides to go under my bed. I turn around, and Caesar has his red butt in the air and his back legs straight up with his head and legs under the bed looking for treasure.

I watch Cairo who wants to be and do exactly as Caesar does. It was so cute to see the two under my bed and their little butts and curly tails in the air. I am sure they didnt know I could see them.

So freakin' cute, and I know I am crazy.

  • I wish you had gotten a picture of that :) One time, my smaller Zoey put her head under the bookcase in my living room. When my bigger Tyler followed suit, he got stuck! I was on the phone with a friend and was laughing and telling my friend they were sticking their heads under the bookcase–but then I realized Tyler was stuck, and I freaked! I hung up on my friend because I thought Tyler would panic and struggle and the bookcase would fall on him (it's a wood case with glass doors and completely full!)--but he didn't. He just squatted there patiently with his little basenji butt up in the air until his Mom came over to drag him over to the higher end to get him out.

  • that is funny.

I remember one of my cats getting stuck in a jeans pant let which was pretty cute too! She was a fat white cat….

  • ha ha, that looks like a squeeze:eek:

  • hahaha. Cute photo. I had to put storage boxes under my bed because Tyler and Zoey could actually fit all the way under and would crawl around under there, and I was worried about them getting stuck–especially Tyler since he's bigger/taller than Zoey.

Thank you all. I will know how to field questions now (it’s not like it was anyone’s business but it was making me feel uncomfortable. I felt people were looking at my beautiful girl like there was something wrong with her!) I love her so much and she truly is beautiful as are all basenjis. Now I know what to say. “Her nipples are proud nipples as yours would be if you had nursed 10 babies twice in your life. “ lol! Thank you all.

just wanted to say that "PATIENCE" is probably the best treatment for a Basenji. Be patient and "Little Man" will acclimatize to his surroundings and you. And not most dogs patience...Basenji patience! (This could mean months)

My boss asked recently if I'd reached the point where I could leave my dog alone in the apartment outside the crate yet, and I told her that I didn't know if I ever would - he's a chewer and if I'm not there to watch what he's chewing, I don't know if I can trust him. She said "oh, so he can't be trained?" "He is trained, he's just a chewer." "Hmmmm…" was her reply, with a face that said "either you're a bad trainer, or he's a dumb dog." Happier note: took Paco to a dog-friendly restaurant last night, and the bartender yelled "Is that a basenji?!?!" from across the place, ran over to say hi, and went on and on about how her neighbor in the States bred them and how smart they were. :D

Kona has my husband wrapped around her little paw. He started letting her come lay in bed with us on the weekends because she would go back to sleep which meant we could sleep in. Then one night she never made it to her crate - DH says he just forgot ;) Now she has started sleeping with us about every other night because "she is too cute and peaceful looking to move." The funniest part is when we get up she just looks at us like what the heck are you people doing? come back to bed. and then cuddles underneath her blanket. She is too sweet!

Oh definitely - your pup must have been the model for the bambi! I generally just get the generic "what kind of dog will that be when it grows up"! Minnesota is a hunting state and most people have the big hunting dogs (- or the little mop dogs).

When Blaze use to dig, my dad would yell, scream, throw things to no end. It didn't help. Then mom decided to "improve" the landscape. Everyday Blaze would dig a hole, she would go out there, lay some waterproof fabric, pull some larger rocks around it, and put water in it. Blaze would come out the next day to his new favourite hole, and find the water. He'd pace around for a bit, then find a new spot to dig. He did this five times, then he stopped. He hasn't dug since. He's also stopped the couch digging, but we have no claim to that. He was sneaky. He'd unzip the back of the cushion, dig out the back half of the foam, hide his rope toy or stuffed toy in it, then zip it back up. We had some lumpy cushions
