My little red and white protector

Basenji Talk
  • My little red and white "rescued" me from the evils of the Sneaky feline today. Here's the story as Stormie tells it:
(originally published in Stormie's Dogster diary)

So the hooMom came home a little early from work today. It seems she caught the cold bug that's going around these here parts, dear readers. She sounds awfully stuffy and she looks well, less than good. Those bags under her eyes are bigger than some suitcases I've seen, and pale! She makes a polar bear look tan…....
(OK Stormieson, I do believe your dear readers get the point - I look downright crappy, OK? - signed, your hooMom)
So where was I? Oh yeah - so she comes home and wants to just curl up on the couch and read me The Heart Of The Savannah until she falls asleep. We read for a bit and I see the hooMom's eyes start to close. I wait to hear the tell-tale snoring…..instead I hear "ZOOOOOOOOM! JINGLE, JINGLE, JINGLE! ZOOOOOMMMMM!" coming from the kitchen. Sneaks has decided that now is the purrfect time to do cat zoomies through the kitchen and chase after his jingle bell ball. This continues for a bit. I see hooMom open her eyes and glare into the kitchen, she's trying hard to ignore it. More "ZOOOOOOOOM! JINGLE, JINGLE, JINGLE! ZOOOOOMMMMM!" coming from the kitchen. I take matters into my own paws - I head out to the kitchen, pounce Sneaks, and come back to the sofa and curl up with hooMom under the woobie blanket. HooMom says "Good boy, son." and pats me on the head. Finally the sound of silence and a woofderfull nap ensued.

-Stormie - nurse maid, guard doggie

***What would I ever do without my little protector?:) ***

  • Too sweet! Hope that you are feeling better HooMom.

I think they know when we feel down or sick. It really helps me out since my hubby is deployed and can't be here to cuddle or make me feel better when I am not feeling good, Chase and Zahra just curl right up or do something silly to make me laugh.

    Got to love the furbabies!

  • Loved this story. Very creative - As though The Heart Of The Savannah gave you some writer's inspiration. :D However, it is nice to know you have someone else looking out for your best interest. Nothing like a nice quiet nap to help you feel better. :)

  • I must say the nap did wonders. I'm feeling something a little closer to hooman today :) Too bad Stormie isn't so attentive to my comfort at night in bed - he kicks me in the ribs every chance he gets! lol! :)

  • @red:

I must say the nap did wonders. I'm feeling something a little closer to hooman today :)

    I hope you feel better soon….....Hooman.:D :D :D

Thanks for the story and smile L.:)

  • That was really sweet of Stormie to look out for you. Hope you are feeling better.

  • Thanks for the well wishes, G. and TLB - I am feeling almost 80% "hooman" today and the bags under my eyes are beginning to diminish slightly - :) lol! I think Stormie is almost ready to be seen in public with me again :D haha! ;)

just wanted to say that "PATIENCE" is probably the best treatment for a Basenji. Be patient and "Little Man" will acclimatize to his surroundings and you. And not most dogs patience...Basenji patience! (This could mean months)

My boss asked recently if I'd reached the point where I could leave my dog alone in the apartment outside the crate yet, and I told her that I didn't know if I ever would - he's a chewer and if I'm not there to watch what he's chewing, I don't know if I can trust him. She said "oh, so he can't be trained?" "He is trained, he's just a chewer." "Hmmmm…" was her reply, with a face that said "either you're a bad trainer, or he's a dumb dog." Happier note: took Paco to a dog-friendly restaurant last night, and the bartender yelled "Is that a basenji?!?!" from across the place, ran over to say hi, and went on and on about how her neighbor in the States bred them and how smart they were. :D

When Blaze use to dig, my dad would yell, scream, throw things to no end. It didn't help. Then mom decided to "improve" the landscape. Everyday Blaze would dig a hole, she would go out there, lay some waterproof fabric, pull some larger rocks around it, and put water in it. Blaze would come out the next day to his new favourite hole, and find the water. He'd pace around for a bit, then find a new spot to dig. He did this five times, then he stopped. He hasn't dug since. He's also stopped the couch digging, but we have no claim to that. He was sneaky. He'd unzip the back of the cushion, dig out the back half of the foam, hide his rope toy or stuffed toy in it, then zip it back up. We had some lumpy cushions

Our intent was to only be a foster home for Zeus. All in all, I think things would have improved with time. I talked with his new parents this morning and he is 90 lbs of happy! :D
