Small world

Basenji Talk
  • Last summer we got our kitchen remodeled, and the company that installed the counters, work all over northwest Ohio. When they first got here, a couple of dogs met them at the door, and as usual, I had to explain the breed.

One of the guys said "Hey, the house we were at yesterday had one of those!"
I asked him where and when he told me the town, about 2 hour from here, I looked up the address of a puppy from me that lived in that town. I asked if he was at (that address), he said yes, and I told him "That dog came from here!"

I have not bred a litter in 11 years and after the puppy is a year old I only have contact with the people if they contact me.
(Except, I remember emailing folks to let them know the DNA fanconi status of their dog's parents and what that meant for their dog. )

  • When I was looking for my first basenji over 15 years ago I spent a lot of time on your website and really learned a lot from you even though we’ve never met! I’m in NE Ohio and am on my 4th basenji and I hear your name and see it on a dog here and there.

It’s a small world when you have a “rare breed” sometimes ☺️.

@donc said in Is a small studio apartment good for a Basenji?: I'm going in the opposite direction and saying I don't think the size of the house or apartment matters. I agree. The space available isn't the issue, as you say, it is the problem of being left alone. That said, there are some unique problems with an apartment as opposed to a house. An unhappy dog won't be popular with your neighbours if it is screaming half the day. Bad enough in a detached house with some property around it, intolerable with close apartment neighbours with shared walls. Add to that the likelihood that the dog may hear noises from bordering apartments or the hallway that will set it off. As I said, for company a cat would be a far better option. @mister-science, some people use treadmills with their dogs, which can be a good option if the desire is just to give them physical exertion, but won't solve their needs to get out and see and smell and explore.

Here are photos of three Serengeti dogs – Ch Serengeti Scarlet Sage, Ch Serengeti Cool Jazz of Woz and Ch Music City Serengeti Jazzman-- whose legacy lives on in quite a few dogs on this forum.

We just got back from 5 days in Maui. Had to put our Laika in a kennel which we found after a long search. It was not easy to leave her there, she did ok we think. But was so glad to see us. We really hated to do this as we adopted her from a kennel 6 month ago. All our travel will now be by car only so we can take her. My husband had to pat everydog he saw in Maui. She is his baby. One of the questions on the malinois rescue application was "Do you have any small animals that you wish to keep?" Hmmmmm . . .

Yonae12, I see that you live in Florida now. Are the animals you mentioned in Florida or Sydney? I guess there are possums around these parts, but haven't seen them alive for a long time!
