Relocating and looking to re-home our two Basenji's in Texas

Basenji Rescue
  • Dear Basenji Owners of Austin, TX or nearby areas:
My family and I recently relocated from Austin, TX to Los Angeles, CA. We downsized and therefore did not bring our two Basenji's with us (male and female). We have friend watching them for us right now but they cannot keep them much longer. Dragon (the male) and Corazon (female) are amazing pets and companions but we simply cannot care for them in our new home in Los Angeles. Ideally we would like to give them both to one caring and loving owner but if that is not an option then we are open to separating them. We are under a bit of a time crunch so if anyone out there is interested or knows of someone who might be please contact me directly at lpatinoatx@gmail.com.
    Sincerely,
    The Patino Family

  • Have you contract their breeder? Responsible breeders normally have contracts that require that the dogs they breed go back to them? Also if not, contact the breeder. If not a responsible breeders contact BRAT (www.basenjirescue.org) No comment on the circumstances for giving up these dogs....

  • Contact their breeder and BRAT

  • How old are these dogs? I don't understand "downsizing" equaling placing the dogs. :( However, BRAT is an option if you can't find someone on your own. Are they Fanconi tested? How old? Are they spayed/neutered? And as Pat said, contacting the breeder is critical if a responsible breeder.

  • Pleases contact BRAT, Basenji Rescue and Transport and they will help!! On the BRAT website there is a "contact" button at the top of the page to click on and a form for Rehoming Your Basenjis....... please fill that out and they will do everything they can to find a foster and forever home for the basenjis.

  • @lpatinoatx I'd be willing to take in your dogs! I messaged you and emailed you, please let me know if we can arrange something or not.

  • We are in San Antonio and are looking for one or two Basenjis. We had our previous two Basenjis for 16 years. They were two girls and half sisters. What are their ages? Do they get along with indoor cats.

Make sure your basenji gets along with the new one. My basenji George did not always get along with other dogs and especially other basenjis. We found George and his "wife" and their puppies. We found homes for most of them but kept two of the puppies and the dad, George. The two puppies and the dad did fight on occasion and it was not a good time. We ended up giving up the puppies , who were with us for a couple of years since they killed one of our cats and another of our dogs. I LOVED my basenji George, my love of my life dog, what a personality but I would not have more than one. Maybe the females are better behaved than the males as George and the one of the puppies were male. Did not get along. Your Vinny looks a lot like my George. George passed away on Feb 14 2018 at the age of around 20 years old. We found him in 1999 and he died in 2018. My husband and I say he is the one dog we will have the best stories on as we grow old. We rescue animals so he was one of many dogs. He certainly stole my heart- I miss him so much. Good luck in your search Helen

Dear Debra, Thanks for the notes and looking up options nearby. We had already written to the Swiss basenji email address, but didn't get a response. We'd be willing to take him to nearby countries in Europe for the right fit. Perhaps now we will try writing to the other countries' basenji groups. He is such a lovely dog, and we want a good situation for him. He has come a long way and is much calmer now that he's a bit older! Cheers

Only the red girl on the lower left, and Wheat are African. The other 2 are Lisa's show dogs. I have to tell you, I am selfish, I hope Wheat is just a village basenji, and she can stay with me fixed. Re BCOA and breeding her. If BCOA approves her, then it won't be my decision to breed. I will just have physical control of Wheat. The folks who brought her back, all BCOA members, long time breeders with knowledge of structure, temperment and health, will decide if and when and to whom she will be bred, if ever. I don't have the knowlege to be a breeder. Also, I know that if she does have a litter and something happens I will be compelled to take back the pup. Its just more knowlege than I have and more responsibility than I want. I just fell in love with this cute girl… We will see what the future brings for her. THANK you So much Lisa for posting her for me. Hugs to you all.

Without coming out and saying it, I'm getting that y'all have some info regarding the chances of Fanconi based on his lineage. We're encouraging anyone in our group to be aware of the risks and have him tested. Poor little guy.

Thank you for opinions! I don't think she is in any danger in the sanctuary but probably it would be nice to let them know that she might be a basenji - more chances to get adopted. And there's absolutely nothing from a shar pei in her!
