Whiney 3 Year Old

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Our 3 year old male B gets us up everyday around 3:30am whining. I take him outside to pee. All he wants to do is mark. Doesn't empty his bladder. This started about three weeks ago. He is eating and pooping fine.
Does anyone else have similar issues with their Basenji?

  • Get a urine test to rule out a UTI and exam for other issues. If those are clear, start taking him out and praising him every 2 hrs in the evening, cut off water at 8 pm, and tell him to go back to sleep sternly at 3 am.

  • I second what Debra suggests. One other possibility is that you've inadvertently changed his sleeping environment. Ours started exhibiting behavior similar to what you describe a couple months ago. Then one night it stopped when my wife put a pillow down on the floor, and Cosette slept on it. We then realized that we'd been throwing the pillow on the floor as an afterthought each night, but we had stopped as it got colder and we were leaving more bedding on the bed. The dog protested that we'd removed her "dog bed"! So yours may be making some similar protest about something you haven't thought of yet...

  • While it is mostly past breeding season for Basenjis, not all of them read the book..... Basenji males (regardless if neutered or not) know when it is breeding season. My first Basenji male, many years ago would cry for the entire month of October... both when he was in-tact and after he was neutered.

  • What Pat says makes sense to me. The fact that he marks when he goes out but doesn't need to empty his bladder might be significant.

  • Just as likely... could be bitch nearby who is in heat. Do you have close neighbors with bitches?

My first Basenji had 2 heats a year, and then she'd always have a false pregnancy after each heat. And she was bitchy for the month she was in heat… and bitchy for the 2 months she was "pregnant". So that meant, with 2 heats a year, she was bitchy for 6 months out of the year. Talk about a good reason to spay a dog! And Pat is right, there is no good reason to keep a bitch whole if she doesn't need to be. Never mind just the convenience of it,,,,, Pyometra IS a threat. I had 2 bitches get Pyometra. I lost one, the other was saved with an emergency spay. -Joanne

Congrats on the newest member of your family! I have a Fanconi dog and part of the reason he has done so well is because strip testing caught it early. I'm sure your B will be fine and live a long, healthy life. Do post photos. :)

@LindaH: I used Missing Link Plus with Maxx (the "Plus" is the one for joint support) and, IMO, it made a huge difference with him. Maxx had Valley Fever for the last 4 years of his life. It skipped the respiratory phase and went straight to the disseminated phase, affecting his bones. I could tell a big difference in him once I started giving him the Missing Link Plus. Do they like the taste?

@FortheLoveofStella: I have a rescue male, who was being used as a stud dog. He was neutered two weeks before I got him. He was aggressive towards other dogs when I first got him, but he has settled down a lot since then - although he still "has to" mark his territory. Did he come from a puppy mill situation? That would account for the marking… because typically Basenjis are one of the few breeds that males don't mark, in fact, it is usually the females that tend to mark. Also you should get them both DNA tested for Fanconi (for your own peace of mind)... www.basenjihealth.org
