Prayers for our boy, please

  • Our boy is having surgery tomorrow. He's lost a lot of weight now. His CBC showed an elevated WBC count. The vet is going to look at his GI tract and possibly do biopsies and to take a look.

  • oh, poor you and your pup. LOTS of prayers and warm thoughts heading you way for finding something that is quickly fixable. You've been through so much for your little guy.

  • So sad to hear, we will be thinking of you and hoping for the best. Take care.

    Jolanda and Kaiser

  • Fingers crossed for the best possible outcome. This has been such an ordeal for you.

  • Surgery? …. I am surprised that they wouldn't try an Endoscopy procedure first.... can see into the gut and get tissue samples.... and have they done ultrasound?

  • Many prayers coming your way.
I pray for St. Francis' intercession for a good outcome.

  • Thanks.

Vet found cancer. It somehow spread very fast within a few weeks. He said nothing could be done. Our baby boy crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. My husband had to make the decision to put him to sleep. I was too distraught.

I hope to God that there truly is a life after death for not only humans but our pets. I can't handle the thought that he's gone and that that's it.

  • He was only 3 1/2. He should have had plenty more years of laying in the sun, chewing up socks and underwear, stealing my food, hogging the bed, belly and leg rubs, and so much more.

It's not fair. I feel so empty. The house is empty. There's just this void. I didn't know it could be so painful. I keep picturing him all over. My memories are so fresh and vivid like it was just yesterday.

How do you get through it?

  • I am so sorry to hear this !
Don't dispare, it is true that dogs go to heaven.
It is right in the Bible that they are there.
I will light a candle for your sweet baby, for safe
    passage over the Bridge.
This candle gets lit every time I hear of a dear dogs passing.
If you want a good website to go to for a memorial, go to
    In-Memory-Of-Pets.com
I have all my B's listed there. It's a wonderful website.
May you find peace in the knowledge that your baby is in the
    arms of his creator.

  • I know how you feel
It will be like this for a while.
Everyone has there own timeframe when a loss occurs.
I have lost many over the 38 years that I have had basenjis.
    It never gets any easier.
I lost one of mine going on 11 years now, and I still am not over him.
I got two tattoos of him,one of his pawprint right over my heart.
The other is of him running full out like he did when he was racing.
They are a comfort to me as I see them everyday.
Be gentle with yourself and stay strong.
Writing your feelings down on paper helps to heal your heart.
Go to the website I suggested. You can write there and also lit a candle.
I will keep you in my prayers

Does it really say that in the Bible? That's been one of my boats concerns.

  • Thank you both. I'll try and upload videos and pictures of him soon.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. It's the price we pay for loving them, and I have paid it many times, for my Basenjis, for my horses, for my other dogs. Time is the only thing that heals. After we lost Sunny, his passing left such a hole in our hearts. Then Perry came, six months later. Nobody could replace Sunny, but Perry brought his own personality to brighten our lives. Seven years on, I know we have likely had at least half of our time with him, but there is never a way to know how many days you have, with a pet or with any loved one. Remember the good ones, grieve your loss, time will dull the pain and let you look back to the good times. Cry when you need to, it definitely helps.

  • There is a great video that you can order about Animals in Heaven.
It is very nicely done and a great comfort to anyone who has lost an animal
and wants proof of where they go.

Animals in Heaven can be order from www.jvim.com
It will give you all the scriptures in the Bible to tell you that
God would not abandon our pets.
Everything on this Earth is also in Heaven.

  • So sorry for your loss…. it is hard enough when they are elderly... but have had a full life... to lose one so young is really, really hard...

Just remember that you will carry his soul in your heart forever...

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my baby boy to cancer a month shy of his 10th birthday and I still tear up when I talk about him.
He was a lucky boy to have such a loving family who did everything they could for him!

  • So sorry to hear this, he was too young to go. I find death of a pet the hardest part of pet ownership but still it is worth it, every pet that comes into your life is special, no two are the same and your memories of your boy will keep him alive in your heart until the pain lessens and another comes to make your heart bigger and more full. I also agree that having a good cry helps, you need to grieve before you can love again. Sending hugs your way.

Oh, I am so very, very, very sorry. And you are absolutely right, it is NOT fair. not fair at all. You and him deserved a much longer time together.

And as far as getting through it, you just put one foot in front of the other. I don't think there really is an easy answer to that. I lost my beloved Digital almost a year ago. I can hardly believe it's been that long, but every day since, I have thought of him. Missed him. And still love him. And some days I still cry about it.

And yes, all dogs go to heaven. When Digital passed, I realized that all dogs really belong to the Creator anyway, so when they pass, they're really just going home. I know Digital, and Jet (my trying boy who passed in May) and your boy and all those other basenjis are there - happy and whole and free of pain. And sometimes they come back.

If you find you need more support, you may want to ask your vet if they know of a support group. I know here there is one through the local animal humane society. And your welcome here. Or you can email me privately if you need to.

And when you're ready, they'll be a pup for you, somewhere. I got a puppy for Christmas. But, because I wasn't emotionally ready for another brindle basenji, I got a brindle boy of a different breed. And Devon has been delightful and was the right thing for me. And someday, I'll get another beautiful brindle basenji, but not quite yet.

  • I'm so very sorry, I can only imagine how devastating this is for you, losing him so suddenly, so young. You and your husband did the right thing, sparing him any pain and misery. And "tincture of time" is the only way to get through it. Lots of tears and memories. Maybe make a photo album, with lots of notes about all the special things he did. If you haven't read the poems about 'The Rainbow Bridge', Google and read, all our dogs who have gone before us are waiting for us there. I'm really sorry.

  • Thank you all.

I can now talk about him without breaking down. I still tear up. I can look at his pictures and his toys. There's still a void and it's still painful and I still cry, but not as much.

We have his ashes on the windowsill, one of his favorite places.

@eeeefarm: For what it's worth, if I was looking to adopt a dog, I would not have been put off contacting BRAT by the OP's posts, but some of the responses could certainly make me think twice about getting involved with the organization! LOL. Well first of all, a very fair post. For the end, really, go look at threads where someone attacks a breeder without contacting them. I defend them with the same passion I show to rescue. My sense of fair play get riled. But please do remember I represent BRAT no more than I represent the breeders. It is my personal opinion. As a rescue, and I have worked with many, they do a great job. It helps to be in a breed where almost any Basenji who is not a risk (ie temperament) can probably be saved by BRAT. When you work in Chow or Rottie rescue, where we have to turn down – no exaggeration -- 20 to 40 for every one we can take, working with BRAT is less traumatic. I can go to a shelter or home and know that if the dog is okay, it won't be put down. I used to walk in shelters to do evaluations on Rotties and Chows and come home crying because even if half of the dogs were stable and wonderful pets, I knew the shelter and local rescues MIGHT save 1 or 2 out of 6 to 10. BRAT stands behind those dogs, as any rescue should. They take them back if there is ever a problem. They pay fosters for medical expenses, which a lot of rescues cannot. They provide support for owners and foster homes. There is NOTHING wrong with BRAT. Of course you get many individuals and some will not be your cup of tea, sometimes someone makes a bad call. But do not judge BRAT by your dislike for me or how I post. Well actually, you might think about this. IF I were a BRAT rep, in any way official, I'd be muzzled or kicked out for expressing my VIEWS in a public forum even if I didn't give away any private info. So again, don't judge BRAT by me. And do remember that I am just as protective of anyone who gets blasted and accused who didn't get contacted first and given the opportunity to fix it.

@tanza: Hmm…. I would "bet not".....gggg;) And you'd win! This morning, Magnum followed me down to the laundry room where I had put some painted-up towels I used last night to get off a lot of the paint when it first happened. Luckily, I was able to grab them up just as he got into position to throw himself down and roll on them. (I trashed them after getting them as clean as I could.) He just loves rolling in stuff that's smelly, whether it's a good smell or a bad smell! He may have learned a lesson, but it's obviously not one that's gonna stop him from rolling in smelly stuff! He seems to be okay even after getting several licks of paint in, no tummy problems, his usual laid-back self. Eating and drinking well.

@MacPack: I am so glad he is doing well! If he is easy to give the shots to, that is huge! And caught early, with good control, maybe, like humans, he won't have too many complications. That said, my old diabetic dog went blind and you would not have ever noticed, she just slowly adapted. I am really so happy for you that Anzi is doing so well. Anne in Tampa it is so HUGE - he was NOT at first and it was a battle and you would have thought i belonged in a loony bin!!! but he's awesome now!!! so far no cataracts - eye specialist says just ever so slight of one but that he woould be surprised if a diabetic dog didn't have ANY - so = so far so good!!! i bring him to the eye specialist about every 3 or 4 months now but his eyes look clear and he sees the tiniest of spots on the floor that he thinks is food so i know he is seeing fine!!!

@dmcarty: Especially when basenjis are younger - stripping them often and at different times of the month is good - that way you can see if something is going on. I had some folks who started stripping at 5 and at about 7 the dog was symptomatic but they had never turned strips - turns out that when they stripped the dog for a couple weeks every day - the strip would turn colors only SOME of the time. So essentially the dog was probably spilling earlier but doing it once a month - they missed when he was spilling. So use up those strips! Exactly right… I think the best way to do it is 3 to 4 days in a row... each month... because when they first start to spill sugar in the urine, they don't always show every day.... I remember that Parry's Jaadii did that... one day would spill, next two not... then the 4th he would...

I was just about to add a post, when I had to leave and pick the kids up from school - saying that my Basenji did a similar thing. It started with her normally soft fur getting really coarse along her backbone. While I didn't notice any more than the usual tiny bit of shedding in the late summer months, it is now back to it's normal "super soft puppy like fur" too! Great news!
