Taking our Old Man on vacation

Basenji Talk
  • As 4th of July rolled around again this year we made our annual pilgrimage to Lake Erie and the family cabins. This is a dog friendly cabin campground near Ashtabula Ohio. My 12 year Cody did well except he didn't get enough sleep. :) This is his first outing since losing his B-girl compainion who passed away a couple of months ago at 15 yrs of bladder cancer. Cody was awesome. even though we had a leash on him we almost never had it in our hand. He stuck with us and when we hung around the campfire at night he would make himself comfortable under someone's chair and hang out. Our only incident was when some crazy person shot off a gun and it startled him and he ran off. Since everyone there is dog knowledgable they simply got up and walked in the direction he went and called his name. A minute later after he calmed down he walked back to us and followed us back. He also did well with the 2 ( 2 1/2 yr and almost 5) small children staying in the cabin with us. They've never been around dogs but were very good not to mob him, they would walk up to him calmly and look at an adult and ask if it was ok to pet him. I instructed them were to pet and they respected that. They did not once pull his tail or poke him. He was so tired he slept the entire 3 1/2 hour drive back home.

  • Aww what a good boy, I love them when they are old. I always called my other dog old man too.

just wanted to say that "PATIENCE" is probably the best treatment for a Basenji. Be patient and "Little Man" will acclimatize to his surroundings and you. And not most dogs patience...Basenji patience! (This could mean months)

@AndrewnShango: While I understand this ad is WAY off the mark, it seems that my Shango is silent 99% of the time (I hope that's because he's happy and well-taken care of.) I also know that he's an ideal indoor companion (but that's because I take him for TONS of walks, runs, and visits to the dog park.) He doesn't cause my friends allergies to act up and he's easy to take care of (when he's not following me around the house or sleeping in my bed :)) This ad is off the mark. It's so sad that people compulsively buy puppies because they are cute without any consideration for the work that goes along with it :( :( Trust me, a lot….A LOT ..... of very happy well-taken care of dogs make noise, and plenty of it! :) The thing is, you cannot make general statements. I have two Basenjis, both healthy, happy dogs. They even share a bloodline {Keoki's Dam is Jazzy's Grand-dam}, and have both been raised in the same home environment since they were teeny pups. Jazzy is totally laid-back; she could easily live in an apartment with a single person who works all day. She would be quiet, non-destructive, content...the ideal indoor dog, although as I've said before the Basenji-500 would disqualify the Basenji for being the "ideal indoor dog" for a lot of people . Keoki is totally opposite -- he makes A LOT of noise when he's left home alone {with no people;he's never home w/no other dogs}, he is the Captain of the Home Destruction Team {chews clothes, chair rungs, wall trim..you name it}. If someone reads that ad and gets a Jazzy, they may well be satisified. If someone reads that ad and gets a Keoki, who I think is a bit more typical Basenji personality, that pup is destined for a shelter. The whole ad just burns me.

@LiveWWSD: Oh what a good dog Keoki is. Charli and his Golden retreaver friend are like that when they haven't seen eachother in a while. Charlie will yell and scream at her untill she rolls over on her back, then he usualy calms down. Now Mind you I take Charlie out to meet dogs at the park EVERY week at least once. You can never stop socializing terriers or they forget and get mean. You know, I think you may be right. When Duke was a young puppy she did take him to puppy classes and he did fine. In fact, his best buddy at class was another Basenji boy. She said that even have problems now just taking Duke to the vet as he viciously – and let me tell you, he is OUT OF CONTROL. If not for his size, they would be unable to handle him -- growls and snaps at every dog in the waiting room. Short of mailing him to Cesar Milan's {sorry Querc, LOL} center, I have no clue where to advise them to look for help. The dog is very sweet, but very high strung and living with a high strung family. There is no clear leader in the family; the dog is jumping on everyone, etc. and I think that really feeds his behavior when they encounter other dogs. Sucks to be them. My dog was awesome yesterday. :p

@MaxBooBooBear: It sounds like she has a case of separation anxiety–not just grieving. I think there are several threads here on handling separation anxiety--which is a pretty difficult situation. I went through the same thing when I had to have Max's lifetime companion put to sleep. I got help from a veterinary behavioral specialist. I agree. She should be through the grieving process by now (5 months later), and it may have developed into SA. Sad to say, it's generally not easy to fix, but it can be done with a lot of time, patience and love. You might want to Google it and see if the symptoms fit her behavior patterns and how one can start on the road to alleviating it. Poor baby. Good luck.
