Few issues with our new addition to the family….

Behavioral Issues
  • We just recently got our new bundle of joy Nala… 8 weeks old.

    Shes such a sweet heart....

Loves to snuggle up to you and keep warm....plays around and is so much fun.

We are having a few i say minor problems.

    First off...
She keeps pooping everywhere in the house.

When we take her out to eliminate she only goes to pee. She seems to only poop in the house in the corners of rooms.

She pooped outside this morning and we gave her praise and a treat.

The breeder had a "kitty litter" type thing in the corner which is why she still thinks she should pee in corners i believe.

She keeps nipping at us even though she is a puppy. She takes it too far. We have been consistant with when she does nip or try to bite us we yell out like if it hurt tell her no and even stop playing at that moment and ignore her for a while...
She stops for a min but then is back at it again or just keeps doing it right after.

She hates the leash...we got her a collar nothing special and we just even tried to put it around her neck and she just keeps scratcing at it......
She always pulls away and resist to even getting use to it. We tried giving her treats and sniffing it to get use to it but to no avail.

Any help would be great as we do not want to have to deal with issues that can be corrected to get worse in the future.

    Thanks,

    MM

  • How is your girl doing and have you contacted the breeder for advice?

    Jennifer

  • And have you talked to her breeder?

So if your breeder used litter for traning, why have you not done so either? She have been trained to use a litter box, you need to continue that and slowly move another litter box outside for her.

Biting.. normal for puppies, that is how they communicate with their littermates and the pack, you need to be consistant with teaching "no bite"… all play stops.. and when she reacts in a positive manner.. immediate praise... and if she goes back to mouthing/biting... everything stops again

Hates the leash?... 8 wks is way to young for her to be on a leash. The breeder should have been putting on collars early on so that the pups are used to having a collar... so you need to start from the beginning. A few times during the day, put on the collar... leave it on, only when you are home and then take it off... takes a bit but she will become used to it... for leash training when she in old enough... just a few minutes each day... the minute that she reacts in a positive manner to the leash, praise and stop for the day/training period

  • You can associate the collar with something good, e.g. put it on her when she is going to be fed. Don't take it off when she is fussing about it. Wait for a moment when she isn't bothered…...even if you have to create the moment with a distraction.....then quietly remove it. You don't want her to get the idea that making a fuss gets it off.

  • I think everything you describe there is common to all 8-weeks old puppies, so don't worry! Keep up the loud 'ouches' for the biting, and make a big show of turning away and stopping the play - then come back to the game moments later. Anubis took a good couple of weeks to stop scratching her collar, she just eventually got used to it. As for housetraining, you could try puppy pads inside the house, before moving to outside once she's used to the pads… It takes a lot of repetitions for a puppy to learn a new behavior, so patience is the order of the day :)

  • We put newspapers in the corners where Lela like to pee, then gradually reduced the size and numbers of her paper toilets. That worked well.
We found that verbal correction and ignoring didn't always do the trick with nipping and biting as a pup. A few times I corrected her Cesar-style, with a touch of the finger tips to the shoulder (like dogs correct each other with a nip to the shoulder). It doesn't hurt but snaps them out of their state of mind. Timing is important, and they should not see it coming. And it's important you don't do it in anger or irritation, or with an element of punishment in it.
As for the leash, I don't have any specific advice, other than patience. If there's anything I've learned in my 2 years with B's, it's that…

  • Where did you get your puppy from?

Any puppy will poop in the house if not supervised until they learn better. That she is able to escape to corners to poop in peace means you are not doing the most tedious but important part of housetraining– which is your eyes are on the pup, it is outside, or it is in a crate.

Here are training tips so simple you will feel faint. :) (Yes I love Mary, she is fantastic).

    http://www.clickerlessons.com/housetraining.htm

Look on the left and right for training other things from nipping to obedience. As we have always said, when your pup does something "wrong" – smack yourself in the head with a rolled up newspaper and say "TRAIN MY DOG." At this point, you have a baby and absolutely everything is normal. :)

  • Hi,

Keep one eye on pup all the time and keep up regular visits outside after sleeping, playing, eating and stay out until pees and poos are done and of course praise or treat or both. Puppy nipping was the hardest for us, method we used was the stop play when they get carried away, the ouch sound(whatever sound makes them stop nipping) and time out in the crate(no growling or anger used when putting them in) just until pup has calmed down and straight back out when calm. I found when Kaiser got too excited the nipping got harder and wilder so we would stop play before he reached the overexcited stage. Re the collar we were lucky our breeder already had him used to it so no advise there sorry and leash training slowly and gently. Be consistent and calm and all will work out, enjoy your pup as they grow so fast. Good Luck.

Ok well yes we spoke to the breeder and she gave some tips about it.

THey didnt use a collar on her before we got her

She is also doing much better with going outside and letting us know. GUess it just takes time.

I guess i just thought she needed to be walked. She has so much energy sometimes after a good nap but we are not walking her as of yet.

I did not use a kitty litter cause i did not want her to get use to this. Why use a kitty litter if we dont plan on using it.

THe nipping is still happening but i guess we cant really do much we just stuff a toy in her mouth and tell her chew so she knows to chew/nip on her toys.

Anyone have any tips on crate training their basenji..

She absoulutely hates the crate in the day..unless she is super tired and will nap on us then we will take her and put her in the crate..

She HATES being away from us and being along. Has no issues sleeping in the crate at night too. Goes in with ease.

Unless there is true fighting leave them alone. They will work things out - the resource guarding may be behind it - but one simply doesn't want the other to be so close or whatever.

I agree. It upsets me to see people walking with Flexis and their dog attacks some other dog because they're not paying attention, or don't know how to work the trigger mechanism properly. I've come to think that maybe people in cities just shouldn't use them because errors will inevitably occur…humans will be humans. I live in the country though, and there's no one around where I walk my dog. The long Flexi is the best choice for me because I like to let my dog explore some on her own when we're on walks, and she can run here and there while still not being able to take off. Not every situation is the same for everyone. If I were in the city or around people and congestion I'd probably use a 5 or 6 ft. fixed lead.

Hello again - well it's been a couple weeks and though I think the growling at my husband is improving, we are still having issues with her peeing in the house when we are home and in her ex-pen when we are not home. She has been trained to use a litter box which is inside her ex-pen during the day, and she uses another similar litterbox in the bedroom at night. It really seems like the peeing she is doing in the house is deliberate. I don't know if she is doing it cause she senses my pregnancy and is acting out, or if she's being lazy to go outside since it's been colder out… or maybe a combination of both? IF I catch her peeing inside, I will firmly say "NO!" and pick her up and put her outside to finish her peeing. Sometimes she's already done though. Shouldn't this work? :( It doesn't seem to be. Any ideas would be appreciated...

Yeah they do the whole 'omg my fur is all messed up' shake turn around 3 times then flop their furry butts down back in bed. I know about the super light sleeper thing. I too can wake up at the first sound of puking puppy and either throw a towel underneath them or try to get them to the bathroom in time so they can vomit in the sink. Once they get they get those ears going it's hard to stop!

@ouidah: My basenji mix (photograph on my profile) comes from a home that seemed to spoil her tremendously. 1. Roxy only has interest in eating if it's people food. I would like to transition her to high-end kibble. I have been able to get her to eat dehydrated lamb and potatoes. But, honestly, I will not be able to afford this on a regular basis. Any suggestions? 2. Roxy jumps on people. I know this is her trying to be the alpha, and I am not okay with it. How do I break her of the habit? I have had all of my other basenjis and basenji mixes from puppyhood, so I am a bit overwhelmed by the thought of breaking a 2 year old dog of bad behaviors. About food, only give her the food you want her to eat… all dogs will eat when they are hungry, they will not starve themselves (of course making sure that they are in good health first). Put the food down for her... give her 15 minutes to eat, if she doesn't eat or finish it, pick it up till it is the next scheduled time to eat. About jumping.... does she know sit and/or down? Before you pet her or let people into the house, put her is a sit stay or down stay. No one acknowledges her until she is in a sit/down stay and remains calm. And jumping on people is not always a way of being alpha...

We've been leaving the crate door open. The worst thing he has done is during the night, he goes to the other dog's pillow, plops down, and the other poor dog gives up and moves somewhere else. We haven't heard a peep out of either of them all night, so we can sleep. Only problem is stepping on them if you don't know where they are! Right now we have two visiting dogs for a month - big female yellow (clueless) lab and a big blonde retriever mix. Buster thinks he can go up and nip their necks and he growls and snaps at them. I know I've read about this type of behavior on the other discussion boards. The thing is, for the first few days, they were getting along and playing. Now, Buster is getting a little more aggressive. Is this just part of the Basenji charm?
