New to the Forum/pretty sure my rescue is part Basenji-

  • Hi! My name is Angie E. I'm a mother of 3 beautiful kids, a pug-named Brutis and a Pitbull, Corgi, (and we think) Basenji mix- named Reesie. She doesn't "YODEL" ,but when she does bark she almost looks like shes trying to "pucker" her lips up and she'll do this growl thing. She grooms like a cat- both herself and the pug. She nibbles his fur with her front teeth like shes "FLEAING" him. And can leap picnic in a single glide! The Basenji breed is virtually unheard of where we live in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Hopefully, I can gain some insight through the forum and get some reassurance that our Reesie is ,in fact, the Basenji that we've ruled her out to be!! I look forward to meeting some new friends and talking to everyone!!

I have her photos up under an album on my account and in the Basenji Mix Group! I'm just figuring the site out. I'll try to get them over here!! I can't wait until I get input on her either way! Anytime anyone comes to our door, I get 2 questions. #1.) Does "IT" bite? ( grrr!) "Um, no, She doesn't" and then #2.) Oh, well then, " What is "IT"?

Finally figured out how to post them!

  • Finally got her photos up where I needed them! i am sooo excited and can't WAIT to start hearing feed back!!!

  • Hi Angie,
She does look like a Brindle Basenji. Also i think Basenji's eyes look like they are wearing eyeliner. Hope you and your family are enjoying her and the many wonders of the Basenji breed.

@carlbick Ah, so you and Connie are not in Puerto Rico - for some reason I assumed you were. It's great that such organisations exist. The health tests I was referring to are those for Fanconi and PRA which Basenjis do need their DNA checking for and which are additional to the normal health checks which would be expected from such a responsible organisation. They are equally essential in the case of Basenjis. Which raises an interesting point - should they be done on dogs which are proven to have at least a mix of Basenji in their ancestry ? Fanconi, I would think possibly but not sure about PRA (progressive retinal atrophy). In view of the similarity to a human's of the configuration of a Basenji's kidneys (the reason they were the subject years ago of so much research by Jackson Laboratories at Bar Harbor, Maine) I wonder if this 'difference' in Basenji kidneys is passed on in a mix ?

Okay he's cute, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if a mix... but without a DNA test, no way to really tell. Barking... well basenjis bark, but for most it is a single Boof.. pause... booof. Not the bow wow wow rhythm of other dogs. Oh shedding... they shed but nothing like my other breeds. We get a shed out in early summer. Otherwise, unless sick, not much shedding. I have only had 3 basenjis... they all hated water, one so much that getting her to potty if the ground is we is a serious issue.

@JaxxnBeer - go to this link http://www.ofa.org/dnatesting/kits.html and then on the left hand side where it says OFA/MU DNA Tests and scroll down to the one that says "Fanconi" and then to the one that say PRA (Basenji) - click on each one and you will go to the order page. Hope that helps. Does this mean that the Sire and Dam have not been tested?
