@debradownsouth said in 6am Basenji Alarm...: Do basenji bitches that cycle twice tend to do at set time? More or less, yes. I have found that bitches born in the summer have a summer season - or a Spring one. But they also have a 'token dribble' when the rest of the pack comes in in Autumn (Fall !). We tried several times to get one lady in whelp in Autumn but the Spring season succeeded and she whelped two summer litters. She obviously only had a sympathy season with the rest of them (we had five nubile bitches for a while - along with three entire males) as did the other three or four girls in Spring. They came in season, sort of, in sympathy with her ! So over the years I have concluded that bitches probably only ovulate once but if encouraged by other canines having a proper season, they will evince the outward signs. Having said that, Basenji bitches are so clean. . . I have never advocated spaying them unless / until it would improve quality of life in old age. Or, as in the case of Hoover, because one member of the family was in hospital and I couldn't cope.

Just 20 minutes ago Elliot was extra excited and running around and when he saw me he was SO excited he gave me a little kiss! I put a command to it ("kiss" lol) and praised him. I asked for another and he did it again! He got bored after the 5th or so time but I hope he remembers it! My Cody used to LOVE wet hair. If you sat down on the couch after a shower he would crawl behind you and rub himself on your head. It was both funny and annoying (much like a lot of basenji quirks).

He hasn't repeated that behavior…..at least not to people. He will growl at other dogs, but only if they are bigger than him. I have started taking him to the dog park quite frequently to socialize him with other dogs. He is starting to make some progress there!

We've had barely a dusting here but its been cold enough to keep it on the grass. Mr. Annoyance is acting like its "rutting season". In, out, in, out. If I don't jump up to let him out he proceeds to pull at the blanket over my feet, or worse yet, bills/mail on the coffee table (much like teachers, bill collectors won't believe "the dog ate my check"). It's kinda fun though 'cause he's also just more playful in general right now. A couple more weeks and he'll probably hate the cold and snow like every other self respecting Basenji is supposed to….:D Silly Basenjis...don't they know their rep???:)

I agree with Catherine, socialization is a must, but it depends on the personality of the individual dog. When we had 4, they all slept on the bed together and ran together and rarely did we have any problems. We added a puppy and things were still going ok, just really crowded. However, one day our youngest girl decided she was all grown up and didn't want to be bossed around anymore by our 'wanna-be' alpha. Neither of them was a true alpha. We managed to defuse the situation, but a month later it happened again. The girls could never be together again. In fact, the tri developed a predjudice against all red girls after that! Both girls were terrific with people and with Basenji males and even with males and females of other breeds. I had 2 intact males, brothers, who stayed together with absolutely no problem for almost 4 years until one went to another home. They even got along during season. Terry
