• While browsing ing the library the other day I saw that the January DogFancy magazine had an article (with pics:-) on the Basenji breed.

  • FINALLY our wonderful dogs are being featured. But that can be scary too. After all, we don't necessarily want everyone to know how wonderful they are. When popularity goes up, so do the numbers of back yard breeders looking to make fast bucks. 😞

  • Ohhh I will have to go purchase that one. Was the article any good?

  • I bought the issue, it does a good job in describing that these aren't the easiest dogs and have crazy idiosyncrasies… It was worth buying... I'm a geek and saved it when I was done reading it!

  • OOO! I need to buy that one!

  • 100% agree with your comment, Fran. Having a well-bred, two year old Dalmatian before the 101 Dalmatians movie was released in 1996, we have firsthand knowledge of what happens when a breed becomes popular. It broke our hearts to watch the backyard breeders pump out the Dalmatians. As with a Basenji, you need to know what you're getting with a Dalmatian; not just cute spots. They ended up getting a bad reputation because the wrong families got them. Seeing B's on the commercials and in the magazines scares me about what will happen to them as they become more popular.

Me too! Basenjis are incredibly photogenic. Many people don't read the details, just see the picture and think "I want one of those!" God help the breed if it becomes "flavour of the month". All it would take would be one celebrity to display a Basenji prominently…..
