What to do for diarrhea

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Thank you for your replies..Yes there is possible nerve damage of the leg..Right now it is splinted and as I said he is on cortisone..Hoping this works as I have spent over $700.00 on him in the last month.. When he fell it was on a Saturday evening and I had to take him to the emergency animal hospital which isn't cheap..I am 77 yrs old and my income is not bottomless..Seeing a specialist may not be in the cards..The splint was put on this past monday..My vet said to give it 2 weeks and then we will see ..He has had the diarrhea before ..We were used to taking daily morning walks with a friend and her basset hound.Sometimes one or the other finds and eats something nasty..Anyway it seems to be slowing down..He only went once so far today..thanks again.

  • Still you should check with your Vet since he is on other medications. Should be able to get some input with just a phone call.

  • Hello again..I will check with my vet ..But I need to clarify something .I just noticed that I put my dog's age as 10 ..He is really 12..I should read things over before sending..I apologize..

  • If the stools are black, usually that means there is internal bleeding somewhere. Sometimes, cortisone can cause stomach bleeding. I hope you are not giving your dog Pepto-Bismol, but that will also make the stools black. Check with your vet.

  • My little Lola was just diagnosed with giardia…. her stools weren't black, but were runny and eventually dark and mucus-like. Here's an article about it; I was surprised at how common worms/parasites are in dogs.

She is now on antibiotics and pro-biotics, along with a chicken and rice dinner. Yesterday she was obviously under-the-weather, but today, she seems like her normal spirit!

Please let us know how he's doing. :)

  • Okay the only thing to add to the above is there is medications that help diarrhea quickly, and they aren't expensive.
It could be the diarrhea is being caused by nothing more than stress, but I also worry with steroids about internal bleeding so if the stools dark, get him in. It might help to give your dog generic antacid ranitidine to help the stomach. Long term, a product like Fastrack is cheaper and massively more effective than yogurt, but even yogurt with rice and a little boiled chicken will help reestablish the gut bacteria and help with the stools.

Please post and let us know how it goes.

  • I use Canned Pumpkin and it works like a charm. I lump (I free it in ice cube trays) and only dry food. Usually by the next morning things are back to normal. If not I give one more dose.

  • The problem here is that this boy has other issues and on meds for those issues. A Vet visit or at least a call to the Vet is need. People should not be treating issues when the dog is already being seen by a Vet for different issues. The Vet needs to know all that is going on.

  • Absolutely right Pat. Important point.

  • I totally agreee with Pat - the vet should know what's going on. Also the fact that the diarrhoea is black is a cause for concern, in my opinion.

@zande said in Help - Kiya is having a diarrhea bout for months: wish we humans could get the same benefit from Vitamin B12 as an aside: Humans need all of the B Vitamins for B12 to work it's magic. B12 alone will not do the trick, I take a "Super B Complex" vitamin every day for exactly this reason!

Copper, my oldest, has always had a sensitive stomach and would get diarrhea out of the blue all the time, so badly that he would have blood dripping from his rear. It freaked me out the first few times it happened! The vet always tried to prescribe an antibiotic but it never helped. The way I always got rid of it was to cook a pound of ground beef (rinsed), mix with a cup of cooked white rice, a cup of cottage cheese, and a cup of plain yogurt. You feed it for about 3-4 days (I always gave him about a cup and a half a day) and then start introducing their dry food back in. A friend on another forum gave me this concoction years ago and it worked perfectly for years. Almost two years ago he got diarrhea and any time I would stop feeding the mixture it would come back. I finally consulted a holistic vet and she said I could continue feeding the mixture but needed to add some veggies to it for fiber, or I could change his dry food. She said to avoid chicken, wheat, soy, and corn. She also recommended feeding a probiotic/prebiotic several times a week in addition to two other supplements, Gastriplex and Moducare (both by Thorne). He's been on Taste of the Wild now, which is grain free (I buy the fish variety but they also have a bison/venison as well as a lamb), and and has had no problems. I'm very careful about the ingredients in the treats I give him now and have had NO diarrhea problems since changing his diet, which is absolutely wonderful! Here are the links for what I use: http://tinyurl.com/27jaroe http://tinyurl.com/2adwtqn- 1 capsule 2x per day http://tinyurl.com/276rn24 - 1 capsule 1x per day http://tinyurl.com/2g47lsp - 1 capsule about 3x per week (I give it on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) Good luck!!

Heres some info from the Merck Vet Manual about Giardia. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/21300. I think that yearly checks for giardia is a little much. Like the manual says we usually look for giardia when a young dog comes in with diarrhea. We collect a stool sample (for Giardia a fresh sample is preferred) set up a float and also a direct. I actually just looked at a giardia sample taken from a puppy and Doctor Mark said its also hard to find the protozoa because after exposed to light for an amount of time the giardia loose its mobility and is hard to tell the difference from regular cells in the stool. The manual says that treatment with fenbendazole (panacur) is used this also deworms for a number of different zoonotic parasites. Which you should discuss with your vet when doing boosters and every couple of week check ups. According to the CAPC your vet should "Conduct fecal examinations two or four times during the first year of life and one to two times per year in adults, depending on patient health and lifestyle factors." http://www.capcvet.org/recommendations/guidelines.html

I was told that if it is an intestinal bug, giving an anti-diarrheal upon onset will slow the bodys natural ability to evacuate the nasty virus, and the 'bug' can in fact regroup in the intestines and come back even stronger. Fluids are key. Dehydration can happen so fast. After the diarrhea slows, try feeding active culture yougart (I use Activia)to re-introduce the 'good' bacteria back into digestive tract. This along with the soft boiled diet and Gatorade or Pedialyte in the water, seems to do the trick with my older male. Glad to hear Topper if feeling better.

@agilebasenji: Sounds like you definately need a specialist of some sort. Also, you may want to try Slippery Elm instead of Immodium or Pepto. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/e/elmsli09.html http://health.howstuffworks.com/slippery-elm-herbal-remedies.htm http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=slipperyelm **The last link is about using it in pets. And it should be available as a powder or in capsule form at your local health food/green grocery. Thanks for that link. Never heard of it used in pets before, but now I'll be keeping some on hand. Excellent!

How is C3PO doing? I read this thread late, but if he's not okay try going to the vet and asking for a broad spectrum wormer. The one that Nala had was a one-time banana smelling (and I guess tasting) one. My vet told me sometimes giardia, etc. can be missed on the fecal test and it doesn't hurt to worm them (provided the rest of the exam checks out okay). That helped Nala immensely. She gained weight and hasn't had diarrhea at all. Sharon
