Treat Question

Basenji Talk
  • Hi guys! Long time, no read.

Life here has been busy, busy. The dogs are getting a new patio and a big shiny (ok, it's wood so not so shiny) new privacy fence so they can run, run run. My DH and I are about to drop, drop, drop. :p We do all these "little projects" on our own.

So, to my question. I picked up a couple of treats for the furkids the other day, they are cow bones (about 2.5" long ish) filled with chicken flavored goo. I checked the goo ingredients and it doesn't seem too dangerous (but who knows these days, right?) and the bone is a real sanitized bone, but I was wondering if they would pose any physical dangers like rawhide does.

    Thanks for your input! :D

  • Sanitized bone should be fine… however like you said, these days I would not trust the "goo"... .... especially now that they have found that for many of the foods that "claimed" they didn't have rice, wheat, corn as the protein source, they really did.... or on the package it was listed as "protein source" that turned to be one of the above glutens...

Agree with all above - you also might like to try mixing a teaspoon of sardine/tuna with a little water and spreading it over the food. Good luck!

both our dogs took about 2 seconds from walking into the room with the needle to walking back out. jonny just looked at the vet, hansel yelped quickly and on our way we went. i cannot imagine putting them out for THAT. but neither one dislikes going either. they both look at it as an AMAZING chance to smell, jump, chase, visit, investigate,… well you get the idea. they love it there. SO MANY dog food bags to smell. lol

@saralars: This is off the subject of crate escape… I was told growing up that turkey and chicken bones were very dangerous for dogs. Are Basenjis different in this way too? Or am I missing something... Raw, uncooked bones are fine for any dog, not just Basenjis… it is "cooked" bones that are the problems

EL D is almost 4 and his neck is 14. My Vet carries a toothpaste made by C.E.T. that comes in chicken or seafood flavor. It supposed to be better for tartar control.

On tv this morning they showed some dogs that were to be adopted at Petsmart from the Humane Society. One of them they said was a basenji/terrier mix. That dog was huge and he didn't look anything like a basenji to me. No batwing ears but the tail was curled.
