  • My fiance Brian and I got our CoCoRosie on February 14th 2011, she was 10 weeks old, since we got her we have realized Basenji's are the dogs for us! Their active nature, curiosity and adorable disposition make them wonderful dogs, we did A LOT of research before getting a Basenji and were heartbroken to hear so many people return Basenji's because they just don't understand the nature of the breed :( We hope to meet other local Basenji owners through this forum. Basenji play date anyone?

  • Welcome. Who did you get your Basenji from? Many of us are related by our Basenjis.

And not only is it that people do not research the breed, they don't go to responsible breeders that screen people interested in the breed and educate them first.

  • I got mine from miBre's Basenji in Homestead, Fl. The breeders are a wonderful caring family and they definitely quizzed us before showing us the puppies!!! Brian and I took about two to three weeks to read thoroughly and research illnesses an life expectancies. When we got to MiBre's they had a couple of pups left and our CoCo picked us!!! We love that she is very friendly and loves to cuddle! She is quite clever as well, definitely keeps us on our feet :)

  • Welcome. The music geek in me appreciates your Basenji's name. Pictures, please?

  • Welcome to the forum - great advice and chat here.

  • Welcome! If you are ever up Tampa way, we have a Sunday meet-up with anywhere form 6 or 8 to 20 basenjis in a large, shady dog park.
Welcome to the Forum, we need to see photos of CoCoRosie.

  • I actually want to go up soon to visit Busch Gardens! Any Daycamps you recommend? We just came back from Disney World and they have an AMAZING PetCare right within Walt Disney World! Its affordable and she seemed veery happy! Let me know, maybe we can make it to a meet and greet while in Vacation :)

  • Glad you found us..I look forward to watching your basenji grow.

  • CoCoRosie is gorgeous - congratulations!

  • She is gorgeous! There are some good doggie Daycare places here in Tampa, I don't know of any right near Busch Gardens though. We have Camp BowWows (near the airport) and a place called Fuzzy Buddies (near Ybor City).

Wow - your 5th! See I had a sense there you had some major B experience ;) We picked up Jack early that day, think we might have been the first to arrive, and only met one other man picking up a little girl, Stella, he lived in NY city I think. I think there was another couple arriving just after we left for the other little boy in the litter, that might be who you saw. I tell you when I walked in, I was just completely in awe of all those precious pups! So tiny, I just did not picture so tiny! We are on Doris's list for a little girl if we are lucky out of a breeding this fall. Jack needs a playmate!!! Well so nice to connect with you and hope to continue to do so. Good luck with your shows!

@longshot: Yes, I would love to adopt him myself… but I am a first-time dog owner, and I am a little intimidated by the reputation of the Basenji --even though in this case he is 1/2 Pug which has an "easier" reputation. Are they sure he is a basenji mix or are they just guessing based on the curly tail and erect ears? He looks more like a Chi mix to me. I just found out on Monday the new "hybrid craze" is the "chug" a Chi x Pug. http://www.flickr.com/photos/troynielsen/2236562915/

@lvoss: Even these breeds shed. Anything that has hair will shed. Anyone with long hair can tell you that. I find strands of my hair on things all the time. If it has hair then it sheds. Some breeds like poodles, bichons, etc shed much less and the hair is different so people with allergies to dog hair are less likely to react. It is a bit different then shedding and by the way, short hair falls out too :D .. the hair falls out… it is usually mostly the dander that gets people's allergies going....

Hi cmd - My name is Jill and I am the recipient of a rescued male puppy, Duke, who I have since learned (after 4 months) is a Basenji, now 8 mos. old. I love this forum, because I have learned alot about this breed. I now realize that Basenjis are a challenge, but I believe the more I know, the easier he will be for me and my family. There is no turning back now because we are in love with Duke . Select "Bonnie Bell" a 10 month old female (from Emerant's the Instigator and Select in my Pocket) and "Ramsey" Geheep's Klassic Jim a 11 year old male (Klassic Eye of the Tiger and Baruh's Jessica Hahnd) Wish I knew where Duke's blood lines run. You must be proud. I am new at this and I love to read the stories and learn that I am not crazy! I am glad you're a veteran as are many forum friends here. I love the stories about the Basenji's extraordinary body of energy and their purposes. Can you guess why my handle is Crazy Duke? I can tell you about some unbelievable stories about Duke since bringing him home already. (That's why I'm glad to find this forum - Duke's not crazy, he's a Basenji.) She was an awesome dog and was very very loyal. I am so sorry for your loss. But the only comfort we have is knowing she had a great life being in your life. I've lost many doggies over the rainbow to squirrel heaven. I hope you'll share some more stories and help us new-B's here on the Basenji Forum.
