Spaying and personality changes?

  • I am going to spay my B at about 9 months, she is currently 6 1/2, will her personality change after the spaying? She is a very sweet girl and loves everyone she meets and I don't want that to change.

  • Should not make any difference. Didn't to any of my girls

  • I doubt it. Usually the case is that they may have some behavioral changes due to the hormone swings surrounding their heat cycle. If she is spayed you will be avoiding any potential issues surrounding that. My bitch would always get the blues for a month or so after her heat cycle ended.

  • I have spayed 3 basenjis and one whippet. Did not make any difference at all in the basenjis. It made my timid whippet much more outgoing and friendly, so I think spaying is a good thing.

  • Thank you everyone!

  • I just spent 30 mins trying to find a research article on spaying and aggression. I did find one on rats, but the one I had before was dogs.

My head hurts, I give up. So let me state I am old and senility is in question, but basically this is what I recall.

In some rare cases, bitches spayed have exhibited increased aggression and needed hormones to help. I will write Wendy and ask since I am fairly certain she was the one who pointed me to it years ago (She owns Mar Vista Animal Hospital and is the editor for the Veterinary Information Network). At any rate, this was with bitches who already demonstrated aggression and evidently removing the hormones that helped calm increased it. But it is VERY rare.

In general, spaying shouldn't change your dog at that age. There are some studies on pediatric spay/neutering where the brains and body never get the hormones, but that also isn't your situation.

  • No affect at my house, with spaying at 7 month.

 Well, darn! Are you sure you didn't mean to type "After spaying the little b!tch turns in to a wonderful performace dog that hangs on her handler's every utterance" ???? That's more of what I was hoping for.

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284

@gigi See, we're adults! We found an agreed upon thing, for I an cranky. I am too tired to find it, but I recall that giving less than a full dose may not be legal if the dog bites

One of my brother's friend Wilson also faced the same situation in which you mentioned that A friend at work lost her dog last year during the procedure so I'm somewhat nervous. But I faced this I got result normal. I was doing my work. I was upset at the time because I had my work burden headache. But decided to go near the Vet for my animal treatment I appreciate the work of the Vet.

I am sorry to hear of your dog's possible Fanconi Affected status. I agree completely with Terry about waiting on the thyroid panel until he is stabilized on the protocol… and making sure if he does have a UTI, getting that under control as well. When you join the Fanconi list, be prepared that you will get tons of information, some of it conflicting. You will need to sort out what is best for your dog and you and his health. Do the protocol and hope for the best. Some dogs do very very well on it. Some do NOT tolerate it at all. I have two littermate boys with Fanconi, the one on the protocol was sick from day 1 and his body hated the protocol. His brother was sick on it, so we came to the conclusion that a better diet could make him feel better... and it did. He lived 4 years after diagnosis whereas the one sick on the protocol lasted about 2 years. Each dog is different. I lost my old Benny to Fanconi last fall and it was the most devastating thing I have been through in my life... I have helped my dog owners with their affected dogs and will continue to do so with the last few that have Fanconi Syndrome. If you ever want to ask me some questions, feel free to PM or email me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Belly rubs to the boy for me and one from Benny's kindred spirit.

Spaying a maiden bitch is a much less complicated procedure than spaying bitch who has had puppies. Basenjis can come into heat as early as 6 months old though mine have always come in for the first time at 10 months. As for being interested in breeding please read the thread in the Breeder Talk titled "Interested In Breeding". There are many things to consider before breeding a dog.
