• Very exciting, congratulations! Fingers crossed for healthy puppies and a healthy mom 🙂 Can't wait to see pictures!!!

  • Oh, she is too cute! Best wishes to Lana! 🙂

  • Oh so cute mom.

I love those big stomach when they are expecting 🙂

  • Wow thanks for posting that Pat. I have had 3 hours sleep (horrific back pain since 2:30… rarely does the sciatic pain keep going off repeatedly for so long with me)..
It is very heartening to see the op got the other testing done. Not wild about people breeding generations of untitled dogs to produce pets for family and friends, but at least the health things were done, and that is a lot.

  • Diff Eqs has been on the forum for a while…. And determined to breed her girl.... and while I would not encourage the breeding, I have to commend her in doing all the health testing first and going to a nice male with a very nice temperament. I know that it was very disappointing last year when her bitch didn't take bred to one of Terri's other males, so best wishes for a healthly litter.

Diff Eqs... do you have reservations for the pups? Is Terri taking one?

From your previous posts, I do wonder if you ever got the health testing, if the stud it titled, health tested etc. Forgive me if I am wrong, but it appears you got a pet and bred her. Nothing to do now, but I do hope you consider putting these puppies on spay/neuter ONLY, getting health testing done on your dog, etc.

I have had EVERY possible test done on that dog, prior to even thinking of breeding, Fanconi, Hips, Eyes, Thyroid, etc. Everything came back good/clear/negative etc. Her information is on the OFA website. The stud is a multi champion dog with multi titles and his owner/breeder has been breeding/judging/showing for over 35 years. I would not EVER breed if I was not 100% sure that it was a good fit and a potential of good pups. I intend to keep one and show it. If you have any further questions you can contact Terri Gavaletz of BushBabies and ask her. She thinks Lana is a VERY nice dog and she should have EXCEPTIONAL quality puppies. So, yeah, you couldn't be farther from the truth. As far as my previous posts, I tried to explain why I thought of doing what I tried to do, and why I did not do it at the end. Obviously you have not read all of my posts. Not to sound bitchy but I am kinda disappointed at your response, as I am doing absolutely everything I can and then some to make sure that the puppies are healthy, happy and only go to great homes. I also learned a lot since some of those other posts too…

I agree 100% with that. I almost made a mistake last year trying to get a puppy from a questionable breeder and luckily did not (thanks largely to the input of knowledgeable people from this forum). As far as BYB I am also 100%, no, make that a 1000% against it, and even tried starting a campaign where I live against them, after my almost-mistake last year. I have never considered myself a BYB, and NEVER will produce unpapered dogs just because I feel like it. I feel completely responsible for any pups that I help bring into this world, and that's why I did a lot of homework (and still doing it) prior to breeding.

Pat, thanks for that post. I was very disappointed last year when she did not take, as I had family and personal reasons to get the puppy then. Unfortunately, as we recently had a family tragedy, which I will not discuss here, all those reasons are null and void. Now I am just looking for healthy B with a nice temperament to be a companion to Lana and to us.

So far I do not have reservations for the pup yet, although I have one lady who is extremely interested. As I said, I am planning on keeping one as well. To my knowledge, Terri is not taking one, but we are working together on finding suitable homes. I can assure you, I am not taking a single step without Terri knowing about it and providing her experience towards it.

  • You must bve very excited aboiut these pups - Mum looks well!

Keep me in the loop on the pups… you can email me privately... as I have lots of inquires about pups...

And yes… while I did not bring that up... I am very happy that you decided to not get a pup from that breeder, you did the right thing... and to hold off... again... I commend you for doing all the health testing.... Keep in touch...

Having papers is not the test for BYB.

I am sorry you are disappointed in my response. While I am glad you found a titled stud, and I am very glad you consider yourself responsible for pups you produce, and it is WONDERFUL you put such effort into health testing… and yes, the evaluation of a responsible stud owner is good, the disappointing part to ME is that instead of getting out there with her and showing HER, and proving she is worthy of being bred, you bred first. I also don't want to sound bitchy, because honestly, you are doing incredible compared to most people who are determined to breed unproven dogs. But I do hope you resolve not to breed her again until you point her at least. It helps give those puppies you are producing a more legit stand.

And just so you know, my bitch had titles in every generation for 5 generations, and I put a championship on her. And then I spayed her.

And when I wanted to get into Rottweilers (sadly long before the internet), I spent TWO YEARS studying Rottweiler genetics, talking to mentors, studying dog genetics in general, going to shows. And I still made so many mistakes. So please don't let my kevetching bother you. I have no doubt you intend to do things right... you have demonstrated it already.

I am just not the person to pretend you did it all the right way and shouldn't have crossed a few more t's and dotted a few more i's. A seasoned breeder with years in a breed can evaluate a pedigree and their animals and may, for a variety of reasons, not title a dog before breeding.

But newbies, well we need to prove our metal first or risk snarky people like me calling us on it. I had my bitch evaluated by 3 breeders and TWO judges, and looking back I will always regret not titling her first. Again, before the internet, before I knew better. I am just pointing out we all make errors and I am far from perfect. And I got crucified generations later, even with my line at Westminster and invitationals. And you know what, I look them in the eye and say "You are right. I messed up." And move on.

So don't let it get to you! 🙂 You'll be fine. One person (me) having a negative opinion isn't worth being upset over. You have many good folks here to balance cranky me. 🙂 I found lovely people like Jan Williams and Robyn who treated us with respect and welcome. Basenjis are a good group to be welcomed and mentored.

And yes, your pregnant bitch looks wonderfully preggo and I can't wait to see the pics!.

There is a reason why I am never going to show Lana, but that is a personal reason which I will not discuss further. I do appreciate your opinion, but I am still hoping to show the pup I decide to keep. Either way, thanks for your input, and yes, I will post as many pics as I can once they are born.

Deb, I don't think the above applies in Basenjis. I know very many people that had a nice pet, not finished, never shown that started a successful, well respected breeding program…and no one ever crucified them. And I have known some people with an adequate dog that they struggled to finish spending a ton of money, and time who eventually used that dog to start a successful, wel respected breeding program...again, never crucified. It certainly isn't the easiest way to reach the goal, but it is possible...and if someone is committed to learning why should we want to scare them away?

  • Lana looks really well, good luck with the whelping and litter, cant wait to see baby pictures 😃

I think she is beautiful and she is sure to have gorgeous pups 🙂

Andrea I think I tried pretty hard to say don't let me scare the person away! And I certainly pointed out the health testing has my admiration. 🙂

And I am not saying what you said isn't true about becoming a respected breeder.. in fact it is true in ALL breeds I am sure. Nor, btw, do I think if you have to spend a fortune to finish a dog that is marginal it is any better than the pet owner with a better dog who simply didn't have the money to finish. And both a heck of a lot better than those who have the titles but don't health test or do and don't report the bad results! I just mean breeding a pet without proving it is not the best way.

But I have to say as limited of time as I have spent with Basenji breeders, I have heard many comments about breeding pets, calling people "glorified puppy mills" (even with titles and testing), accusations of hidden genetic issues, paying/bribing/politics to finish champions, breeding unfit dogs etc. I think Basenji breeders are overall a nice bunch, but to suggest there are not harsh judgments and snarking isn't reality.

And again, I am heartened by her commitment to finding a good stud, stand behind her pups, and do all the testing. That's a very good start. So again, don't be put off by me. 🙂

Of course there are always people in any sport, group, society or otherwise that are willing to imagine the worst, or succumb to jealousy, or participate in bashing just for sport…but in the basenji world, most bashing is kept between friends, or quietly mentioned in innuendo....not what I would call crucifying. People in any breed who plan to have successful breeding programs need to have a thick skin for criticism by their rivals...and they need to be able to stand behind their decisions. But, from what I have seen MOST other breeds have far more outward nastiness than ours.

  • Andrea, I agree. I have had nothing but good experiences with Basenji breeders!

  • How is Lana doing? Could be any day now?
