• It seems cruel to keep them crated for so long, if that's the case.

  • If you are determined to rehome your dog, please put her first. Spaying her ensures that the person who wants her wants a pet, not a puppymill breeder. No responsible person would buy her with breeding in mind for $700 unless she has a superior pedigree, so a responsible person wants her spayed. If she has a mediocre pedigree, then you protect her from being used to churn out puppies and sold at auctions when she is old or dumped in a shelter.

Since almost any responsible breeder would have sold her to you with a contract that demands they get her back or a say in placement, OR would have sold her with limited contract so she can't be bred, I do wonder also about the breeder. If there was no contract, please, spay her and relinquish to Basenji Rescue so they can find her a good home and guarantee to take her back if issues arise.

  • Sequoia sounds like a wonderful girl and it must be hard to make the decision to re-home her. Do you have any pictures of her? Where did you get her- from the internet, or from a dog store, or from a breeder? Is she registered? Is so, can you please provide her registration number so we could check her pedigree?

Personally, I've never heard of a basenji that will fetch a leash. 🙂 How did you manage that trick?

  • It sounds like she needs to go to a home with another B that can play with her and keep her active since she is young.

Has anyone e-mailed the owner to find out the status of her B?

    Jennifer

  • We were looking to get a companion/friend for our Shiba Inu and thought a Basenji might be a good choice. We were looking to rescue one but came across this ad and she sounds like a perfect dog for us. Would love more info. We would definately want to spay her asap and daily walks at the park (except during the frigud weather) are promised. She would aslo have a little boy also with alot of energy to play with!! If she has not already found a home, please contact me at Jatysma@aol.com. Thanks…JILL PS We are in ALBANY, NY

  • @Kipawa:

Has the initial poster contacted anyone? I just wonder why Lady Tiger hasn't answered any of our questions.

Her profile shows she signed on Nov 8th so I guess unless you are offering to buy the dog, she doesn't care to respond.

  • In the meantime… if you are looking for a "stable" dog that would be welcomed into your home, please look into "yodeldogs" ... Robin lives near Atlanta and she may be looking for new homes for some of her babies. 🙂

  • Lady Tiger,

Please, please don't rehome her unaltered! There is such a high chance someone will use her to pump out puppies.

If you love her, you will do the right thing….

  • I'm sorry but as i mentioned before I DONT have time for her and I cant take care of her. she need to find a loving home ASAP or i have no other choice but to give her to a shelter. Im never home between school and work. i work 2 jobs, one full time one part time and go to school part time. Im sick of her being home alone all the time with no attention or anything and noone even to let her out to go to the bathroom. she's a great dog i just dont have the time.. things changed alot over the past couple of months and i just can't keep her anymore.

oh and BTW the reason i havent responded to anyones msgs is because i DO NOT have a computer with internet connection and my phone does no allow me to make posts.

  • Hi there! I'm glad you were able to get back onto the forum; there are a couple of people listed on this string that are willing to offer a home to your girl. Hopefully, things will work out as they should, and you can find someone that is basenji-savvy. You are right that the situation you describe isn't ideal for her.

Many people balk at the idea of "giving" their dogs to BRAT, but please consider that as a choice if the leads on here don't pan out. First, BRAT will make sure that Sequoia is fixed, so she won't end up in a puppy mill scenario. If you haven't tested her for Fanconi syndrome, they will, so that her next home will know if she will need special care as she gets older. Sadly, there are several postings on Craig's Lists right now for older dogs, that may/may not have Fanconi, which may be attributing to sudden accidents for older dogs.:(

Based on Sequoia's disposition, BRAT volunteers will seek out her "forever" home. Many people on Craig's List are enchanted by the cute curly tail or the wrinkled brow, but they don't understand the breed. They don't understand how smart the dogs are, and may think they are mischievious (versus curious). :rolleyes:They may not want a dog that intends to sleep under your covers, or to take any opportunity to chase a squirrel or rabbit. They may become fed up when they constantly come home to garbage cans that have been cleaned for you, in basenji fashion. 😃 In frustration, they may give up on Sequoia and post her on Craig's List 3-4 months later . I'm not saying this to criticise all Craig's List adoptions, because I've actually done three of them, but I'm painting a worse case scenario.

BRAT will make sure this doesn't become Sequoia's future. They will screen her future home, to include a home visit. 🙂 They'll make sure that she will be in a safe environment (i.e. not on a busy street with no fence), and that the people/other animals are a good fit for your girl. And before everything is finalized, they will make the people commit to keeping her forever, and it's in writing. (If someone would want to get rid of her, she would have to go back to BRAT for re-homing.) If you don't have the time to screen out Sequoia's next home, I promise the BRAT will stand behind your girl and treat her like she's a princess. 🙂

Anyway, I'm not a BRAT volunteer, but I am a basenji lover. :p I hope that you find what's best for Sequoia. 😉

  • Wow I thought I heard the breeder was willing to take her back so why a shelter?

  • Whatever is the story, this basenji girl needs to be fixed before she is rehome.
Many areas and humane societys have low cost spay neuter for folks on limited incomes.

  • i dont know who the breeder is i bought her from a girl when she was a pup. The girl had no information to give me about her what so ever. believe me i asked

  • First Basenji's

Dear LadyTiger, I am interested. My husband and I lost our Buddy two weeks ago, and I was looking to announce it on the forum and discharge myself from the group. My husband wanted to get another B, and I am hesitant as Buddy was the best. From all I read about B's, and the Vet's office said he was the best at the office out of 5 in the practice, my neighbors loved him like a 'nephew'(long story) and she is not red and white so she would not be a replacement….....It has only been three weeks and I am still grieving. Where are you located???? I am a trainer and understand the work you have put into her for her to be such a good girl....

  • First Basenji's

    PS: she would be spayed…

  • Hi Buddy's Pal… I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your Buddy. No matter what, you are NEVER discharged from the basenji forum (if I could insert a heart here, I would :)). Regardless, I hope things work out well for you. If the NY Lady Tiger/Seqouia doesn't work out, there are several "feral" basenjis that are closer to us in Florida. Did you see the video that Debra Down South posted of the Wimauma dogs with Pam? That may be an interesting experiment for a basenji trainer. â•D

My kids tell me, perhaps in jest, that I love our basenjis more than humans. I don't see that as such a bad thing. 🙂 😕 😕 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm so glad that Buddy left such a wonderful imprint on your heart that you are ready for another b!
