I would take her in a heartbeat if I had room.. unfortunately I'm pushing my limits with my father already, as I've saved a few cats while living with him again. She sounds like a wonderful dog. I have no doubt that the bites were provoked. Dogs, especially Basenjis, can be very sensitive. If you don't understand that you're dealing with an animal that has feelings too, you're in trouble. I will keep her in my prayers. May she find the best fur-ever home!
13 week old puppy on Craigslist

the solution is to get states to ban pet stores that sell puppies. this would cause the puppy mill people to go out of business
people need to start picketing outside pet stores that sell puppies make them lose enough money that they go out of business or stop selling puppies.
the public needs to better informed about what they are purchasing when buying from a pet storeregulations need to be tightened and enforced with stiff penalties for puppy mill people who dont follow the laws
yet…..
i have a foster coming next week who is coming straight from a breeder
brat is taking at least 3 dogs into foster care for adoption from this breeder so....its not just puppy mill people who cause basenjis to go into rescue
unfortunately none of the above helps breeders now, it will probably be years and years before things change.
why not a major ad campaign from peta shown on national tv and in magazines detailing puppy mills and how the puppies end up in pet stores ?
most people who purchase puppies from pet stores are just ignorant get the word out and they wont buy from pet stores but will go to breedersbut to not rescue b's in need, because breeders cant sell puppies?
i can absolutely understand how breeders could feel this way but i dont think the solution is to stop rescueing b's in need
its just a really unfortunate situation thats needs to changed sooner rather then later

Gotta ask - what's with taking them from a 'breeder' - unless someone reputable has had some issue where they cannot - I cannot think of one basenji person who would not take their dogs back in a heartbeat.
-
dont know
i just got an email asking me to foster a dog coming from a breeders home
at least two others from the same person are being put into foster care as well -
As I said - if there is a health or personal issue - I can see it - but …....

So don't lump all breeders into one basket. Responsible breeders take their pups back, no questions asked... unless there is a health or another good reason. And in that case, provided the problems are not totally financial, they should put up money for the dogs care.
-
My point exactly - BRAT and I had a 'difference of opinion a few years ago over lumping all 'breeders' together' If it is a real breeder in trouble - lets help - if it's a BYB in trouble - I believe we need to help each other before we help puppy mills and BYB.
-
shes a real breeder not a backyard breeder im told she has health issues cant handle the dogs shes keeping a puppy
-
I hope that she contacted some of the rest of us - we always try to help each other out.
-
i dont know who she may have contacted
i dont believe shes a member here so she may not have known of the support she might have found here.im looking forward to meeting bunny next week (name is definitely going to be changed)
shes a 4 year old tri who is being spayed next week had at least one litter
shes a counter surfer, spends alot of time in her crate, doesnt know how to walk on a leash or let her people know when she needs to go outside so im sure ill be here looking for support from all of you to help prepare her for adoption -

why, if you had health problems, would you keep a puppy (instead of an older, easier dog) ? Bless you for helping her out though.

I think Diane means the rest of the basenji breeder community, not neccesarily this forum. If she is a responsible breeder, involved in the basenji community, the community would step up to help her out if she let people know she needed the help.
-
lots of breeders on this forum which is why if she was a member she may have found help here rather then going thru the rescue
not sure why the east coast basenji breeders werent able to help but maybe she didnt ask
not sure about the puppy thing either im sure there must be a good reason, personally i wouldnt give up an adult bonded dog to keep a puppy but… -
I can't imagine that a responsible breeder would have a dog that spent all it's time in a crate and couldn't walk on a leash - either.
-
I am glad someone is going to meet this b and help her out.
-
I've seen "BYB" a lot around here. What does it stand for?
-
yes it should be fun, i hope
hoping that "the dog doesnt know how to ask to go outside" doesnt mean she isnt housetrained ):
she is crate trained so that will be a plus if there are any problems, not that i ever needed to use a crate with my first b but…. from what ive read on this forum it might be a useful tool
hopefully i wont be housebound with her like i was with sebastian
just hoping that she will enjoy lots of time at the dog park, sleeping in my bed, getting to go for walks etc etc
since she is a tri im hoping lucy or lola will work for a name
lucy like in charlie brown? dark and a tomboy with an attitude
while bunny is a nice enough name i just cant see myself at the dog park calling for bunny
im assuming from what little info ive gathered (breeders first name) that she is from the kenset line
anyone know anything about those bs? -
BYB is Back Yard Breeder.

anyone know anything about those bs?Has she been DNA tested for Fanconi? And is she (the breeder) still breeding? If so and she has health problems, she should not be…. nor would I consider that person responsible.
-
fairly certain i know where this dog is coming from not 100% but…
ive put the info ive received together and it seems to point to one breeder
if its the breeder i think it is then awhile back someone mentioned that almost all of dogs in her lines come from fanconi free kennels (most of them are from the kenset line )some testing seems to have been done by this breeder.
im not adopting the dog just fostering til shes adopted.
my info is that she is getting out of breeding because of her health and is going to keep one puppy.
ill meet her on thursday
must be tough to give up your dogs ): -
Still good to be safe regardless of the pedigree and have the dogs tested especially if the sire and dam have not yet been. At least, IMO
