Shelter Challenge

Basenji Rescue
  • I posted on not dog boards I am on, facebook, emailed friends. If we all beg friends to help surely we can get back in the running because as of today, STILL not up. :(

  • Very sad… we are slipping more percentage wise. Please everyone, beg all your contacts to vote for the next few weeks.. :(
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help and vote for BRAT in the Shelter
Challenge. We have fallen out of the top ten--and out of the top spot
in Texas. We risk getting shut out of prize money if this continues.
    To vote, go to:

put in Garland, Texas and choose Basenji Rescue & Transport.

  • Agreed. I vote from home, my phone and work. :) Share it on Facebook and Twitter as well. I'll send it out to my co-workers again.

  • Yes, keep on voting. One thing I like about voting (besides helping wonderful basenjis) is the verification system you have to use right before they accept your vote. Most websites that use a verification system have jumbled up letters and numbers that I often can't make out. But the voting website uses gorgeous pictures of different animals. What a great idea!

    Please vote everyone!

  • Yay! Links! Voting now - thank you!

  • Several co-workers have voted. I may or may not have threatened to "shank a puppy" if the Goldens beat us. :)

NOTE: I love all dogs and my mom's beloved Golden was an amazing dog. They know I'm joking around.

  • BRAT still has not made it into the top 10 – we need votes EVERY DAY.

  • I am very discouraged, we are well out of top ten, but worse, slipping where we get money which is in the TX numbers. Only top gets money and we were originally top, then behind less than 0.1… they are steadily pulling away.

  • Last I checked, BRAT was 11…did it change that quickly? I put the youtube video of the Wimauma puppies on my facebook and added the tinyurl link to vote for BRAT, with a little plea to my friends to vote and saying that Paco says thank you. Hard to tell if anyone actually votes, though.

  • I am going to tweet it again tonight.

  • I work online, so I posted it for all of my co-workers to see, and many of them have turned out to be animal lovers and have committed to voting every day as well as tweeting and facbooking the link. :)

  • I feel so sad to see us losing more and more ground in the texas group, which is where we get funds. :(

  • We are still 2nd in TX. Vote y'all. :)

  • Keep voting everyone, we are back in the top 10!

  • Yup! I've announced it on Facebook and at my job - everyone's excited to be in on it!

  • The problem is this… top 10 doesn't help. Brat gets money for being number one in TEXAS, and we aren't... so we got to push harder! GO GO GO!

  • @DebraDownSouth:

The problem is this… top 10 doesn't help. Brat gets money for being number one in TEXAS, and we aren't... so we got to push harder! GO GO GO!

We know this but we are going in the right direction! Just got to keep going!

  • YES we are going in the right direction. I am just almost distraught over it lol.

  • What are the "dark horse" prizes they mention for the ones who make it in the top 10 but not that top 3? Is that just recognition, nothing else?

  • Keep voting.
There's more at stake than just the top three prizes.
Each week a $1000 prize is awarded (I think random) and there's a new prize this time - Champion Challenge Award - for the shelter with the most cumulative votes in all three of the year's races.
The Dark Horse prizes are reserved for rescue organizations that have never won any other prize in any past Challenge or in the current Challenge. This includes Final, State/Regional, Weekly, Story, Photo, and other special prizes. I don't think BRAT would qualify since they did receive weekly and maybe state prizes in the past.

BRAT has a chance for one of the prizes – keep voting! We have until December 19.

I am very happy for Medfly, too; they are an extremely worthy group.

The rules did change this time and made it more fair: Under the rules of the 2012 Shelter+ Challenge: ? No group may win more than one Grand Prize in 2012. Winners of the Grand Prize are not eligible for state or regional grants during the same voting round, but are eligible for all other prizes. We congratulate Blind Cat Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc., our first Grand Prize winners of 2012! ? Regional prizes (State, Canadian, or International) may not be won during two consecutive voting rounds by a single organization; they are now limited to a maximum of two prizes during non-consecutive voting rounds per group per year. ? Weekly Winners are not eligible for Regional (State, Canadian, or International) awards during the same voting round. Weekly Winners are not excluded from Grand prizes and Special prizes.<<< But I agree. I think that they should limit Grand Prize to every OTHER year and state to once a year, not every other voting. It has become much like a steady supplemental income for a few groups. I think after so much money, the group should be eliminated completely for a while. As it is, many wonderful rescues have zero chance.

The thing with multi-generational mutts is that they tend toward the dog "default" which is the same look that you see in many street dogs and pariah dog, medium size, prick ears, and often tan coloring. Since basenjis are a primitive dog they share these characteristics.
