Does anybody know of lure coursing in Texas

Basenji Training
  • I used to live in Houston and at that time from 2001-2004 when I was coursing I had the only B coursing in Houston. There are Bs that course in Hutto-near Austin and in Dallas. My dog coursed mostly in Hutto. I was at Hutto in February and I had the only B. Are you interested in ASFA or AKC or both? For AKC, you would have to go to Dallas and/or OK for majors. I hope to move back to TX soon, within a year (if the economy gets better). Right now I have 2 older Bs, Arnie, who is eight, can run in either veterans or field champion stake for ASFA. I rarely run in AKC anymore since he has his FC and MC title. My other B is 10 and I only run her every so often. I have been considering getting an adult lure coursing B.

The lure coursing in TX usually begins in late October/early November and goes through March. Once at Hutto, I believe in January, there was snow on the ground when we first began but it quickly melted.

Do you go to the dog parks in Houston? I used to go to the dog park in West Houston and I also went to the indoor one that was near the Heights/Inner Loop. I visit Houston from time to time so perhaps we can meet up.

  • I would love to meet up if you were to come on by. Just let me know. I have never been to a dog park, but used to live in the Heights. I can't believe I missed that one.
I guess I woud be more interested in ASFA, but anything at this point sounds so cool. My B is still fairly young, only 5 months old, but I would definitely be interested in starting coursing..

The alamo area whippet club has all the TX and neighboring states events on their calendar at this link, we course our two basenjis in AR and OK. TX is too far, except in Dec for the AKC LC nationals.

  • Thanks for the info, lisa. I did see this website, and guess I have to wait for October to roll around the corner.. Can't wait.

  • TX is just too hot to run most of the year I spent 9 yrs in the Killeen area with my 4 basenjis, very little running due to the heat. Try some indoor events in the summer like rally or agility, mine love it.

  • Thanks for the ideas. i will try to do that..do you know where I might want to look for agility or rally?

  • You can get decriptions of the events and even links to organizations online. Your vets office may know of local trainers. When I was in TX the lady who taught my first two basenjis basic obedience held her classes outside in a park. Nearly every community has someone who advertises classes and training in basic obedience. Obedience is normally a requirement before going into rally or agility as both you and the dog have to know the various turns and commands. Here in Missouri I take classes with our local kennel club at my vets building for rally. Unfortunately there are no agility classes within an hour of my location right now so we are not competing in agility.

  • Otis is in a beginner Obedience class, he has three more classes to go. I did see some things online, but will also ask my trainer, or should I say Otis' trainer..lol

  • There is a lure coursing event happening above Austin 10/23 & 10/24. It's in Hutto. I don't know if Basenjis will be there, but I'm going to go. It's been an interest of mine for a long time. :) I want to see what I need to do in order to get Nayru involved…if she shows an interest, that is.

  • We will be in Hutto next weekend. I will have Trog and Xander in Fch ASFA, and I believe Linda is bringing her girls for AKC. There will be practices at the end of the day Saturday, which your dog could try. We were just in Florence at the beginning of the month, the field had not been cut, so it was a bit of a challenge.

  • Thank you, Lisa. Nayru is brand-new to me. I don't know the ins and outs of this. I also don't know if she would come back to me. LOL

I also work on Saturday so will only be there on Sunday. :(

  • Darn, I would have loved to go to the coursing - but the Belton shows conflict. I too have been trying to find coursing since we moved here. I have 2 kids with their JCs and one trial towards SC, and several others I would like to try coursing. Now that Wanda Pooley has moved here, maybe we can get it together and organize some practices (she has equipment!)
BTW, word is that the Houston Basenji Club has folded. Maybe those of us in the Houston area ought to restart it!

    Terry

  • I would love it as well, although I have no B yet…
Terry, as far as I know the Basenji Club here in houston has been dissolved for years..a new one would be swell..I will be in if we start a new one.

  • Lots of TX coursing coming up. 6-7 Nov ASFA/AKC Cat Springs, 13 14 Nov AKC Lc in Wylie, 26-28 Nov ASFA in Decatur, 11-12 Dec ASFA in Waller,18-19 Dec AKC in Cat Springs and 31 Dec - 2 Jan ASFA/AKC in Cat Springs. We will be at the Wylie and Decatur events for sure and possibly the end of the yr event in Cat Springs if my whippet is not in season then. TX coursing runs Mar - May and Oct-Dec due to the heat.

  • Houston is only 3 hours from me. :)

Lisa, I'll look those up. Thanks! I'm not familiar with Cat Springs. Is there anywhere to go to see a schedule with maps?

  • go to this link under the premiums it lists the addresses of the various farms where they course. I have never been to cat spring either, but found it on the map slightly north west of Houston.

  • Thank you! http://www.alamoareawhippetclub.com/AAWC/Event_Schedule.html is what worked for me. I will bookmark it. Even if Nayru doesn't enjoy it, I think I would. :)

  • So cool, I am litterally in Waller, will be going to that one for sure.

  • Great. I do not think we will make Waller as there is NOTRA that weekend closer to home if the weather cooperates. If the NOTRA is cancelled we will go south.

  • Could you give the location/time of the lure coursing event in Hutto on Oct. 23rd and 24th? I'm very interested in going. I'm assuming you can bring your basenji with you (on leash). He's never tried this before, so I thought it might be a good opportunity to give it a go at the end of the day on Sat. Thanks!

@ibi_n_sane: yess it was a great day :D cant wait to see the pictures of Job ( Janneke's boyfriend ) that he made from our dogs too! we only took our galgo and 2 ibizans to the coursing, that gives us all our hands full enough haha the basenjis and our oldest ibizan hound can come the next time, allthough they enjoy the racing track too! ( the settlement of the racing track allows us to take all dogs at the same time and not having our hands full with these 6 haha ) I loved to see Barry (the galgo) run.. he ran beautiful…. :D And yes... I liked Cy and Smitty also... :D

@Mia: I tried an online seach for lure coursing in Orlando but nothing. The closest one is about an hour away, actually ASFA only cites 3 in the whole state of Florida! If anyone can give me advice on how to find a club and get my puppy running that would be great. Thanks If they are not listed with ASFA or not AKC ( and I check AKC site and looks like only one club in AKC does coursing in FLA, Sunshine State Coursing Club of Central Florida) most likely you will not find one any closer. You might try NOTRA (oval track and see if any in FLA) but usually the same clubs that course do NOTRA. Also you might contact the club in Fla and ask them..

@lvoss: In order to get a JC your dog does not need to run with another dog. A JC is earned by your dog running the course by itself. It must pass 2 JC tests to earn the title. To certify a dog for ASFA the dog must run with another dog and show that it will not interfere. D'oh! I got the two mixed up :) But that's what I meant, lol…. Most of the lure trials we attended were ASFA trials....I think we did do practice runs at ONE AKC trial, but Jibini was less than 1 year old so I am pretty sure thats why we never did a JC "qualifying" run. I'm tempted to get back into it now that I have my own "pair".....but it always seems money is an issue that makes a 300-400 mile weekend jaunt a bit out of reach!! I also found it disheartening that there were so few Basenjis entered in Florida lure courses, and among those I met, nobody had dogs who could run with a strange dog. However, I enjoyed the time I spent at Lure trials and letting Jibini run....it was fun, even if we didn't get any "alphabet soup" for Jibini's name!!! Defintely an experience well worth it :)

Good for Zahra! Sometimes they just get so excited they just have to pee! But it's great that she went back on the course. Dude has a thing for brindles. His wrestling and racing buddy here at home is our crazy Energizer (you know, she keeps going and going…) brindle Amina. So when he went against a brindle boy in the first heat he charged gleefully over to him at the end - the boy was not impressed! In the second heat he was up against a dark brindle girl who even looks like our Amina. At the end of that one he ran over to her and they took a tour of the field together. He's not aggressive about it, he just wants to play! He totally ignored the reds that were also coursing. Terry
