Accidents with older basenji-mix

    My hubby and I are getting really frustrated with our approx. 9 year old Basenji-mix (a rescue, we think half Basenji, half ShibaInu since parts of his coat are much thicker than Basenji and the coat color pattern seems to fit). I have been reading lots of posts here about housebreaking and potty training hoping that this was a common enough issue, but it seems only much older dogs are having incontinence issues. Boomer is probably about 8.5 or 9 years old and I have had him for 7 years.
    We did have some issues with potty-inside accidents when my husband moved in with us, but he seemed to get over that within a couple of months. Two years later, he is having bigger problems than before. Lots of peeing accidents (on the floor, on the sofa & blanket on the sofa…), a couple of pooping incidents in the laundry room (concrete floor, but then kicked clothes over it and wrapped the clothes around it) all within the last couple of months.
    I know the peeing could be kidney issues, I am going to pick up some urine glucose strips before rushing him into the Vet to test for Fanconi. My husband swears Boomer's 'behavior' is substantially worse in the past 6 months than in the past 2 years, but I do wonder if it's health issues and/or related to changing his food too much lately. (Tried a wheat-free expensive food to see if his stomach/groin licking till he was raw was an allergy issue, but then he had those poop incidents in the laundry room and the licking did not cease, so we are transitioning back to regular food).
    Any advice? I am making sure to walk him in the morning so he pees on all his favorite neighborhood landmarks and has the opportunity to poop if he needs to, then letting him out several times in the evening. But for now all we can think to do is crate him while we are out of the house at work to prevent him from peeing all over our furniture. (PS. Thanks for reading my first (rather long) post!)

    I think you need a vet visit and sooner rather then later. While a mix can have Fanconi, it is not very common. I would worry about him having diabetes. When was the last time he had a full Vet check up and full blood workup?

    He could also have prostate problems if he is intact. I agree with Tanza to get him to a vet to have a full workup especially since he is now a senior.

    It's difficult to comment with advice on separation issues when you have no idea of her background. It seems to me that something has happened to her in a house when she was alone in the past as you say Loki is quite content to stay in a vehicle. Having the other dog (very handsome) may help but you are wise to check that out first - the worst scenario - you could have 2 dogs screaming! Sorry to be flippant. I would agree with Moth about the possible need for a behaviorist. Welcome to the forum to you, Loki and possibly A N other.

    I have had that same situation with Ayo,only with him it's usually with large dogs. we only have one area at the park here, all together, small dogs and big dogs. When he goes in he always chooses one big dog , runs up to him and starts growling. Sometimes he stops very quickly, or the other dog growls back and it stops or it escalates , usually because the other dogs owner freaks out. He is fine around small dogs. And I am pretty sure that he is fine with most dogs, that if I leave them they will work it out, but I'm afraid to let it play out because bigger dogs can really hurt him, and also because usually the other owner freaks and intervenes making everything worse. Sooo, Ayo has started to get a bit of a rep.. The basenji rep!! I usually wait till only small dogs are in…

    I started with a cat toy with a pl bag tied on the end to see if they would be interested before i went any further. The I used an old fishing rod with rope tied from there. Kind of worked the same as a lunge whip. (I'm too cheap to buy one if I don't absolutely need one)

    I would LOVE to involve my B with Lure Coursing. She is a mix, so she could only run in practices, but that's fine with me. I just know she would love it… and I would appreciate her getting the exercise. Unfortunately the closest group that participates in lure coursing is approximately 2 hours away from me. If anyone knows of a group that participates in lure coursing in the knoxville, tn area, please post or send me a private message. THANKS!

    I've hiked off leash at numerous areas here in the SF Bay area. They love it! Any there was only 1 area that was a problem with ticks. To me after 30 years hiking with them it's the best way to establish a great relationship with them. There's no two ways about it, Basenjis love hiking adventures.
