  • My name is Sanda Saunders. I have been involved with dogs and horses all my life. I do what they call "Natural Horsmanship". Our family lives in North-Eastern Ontario, in a small town called Deep River, West of Ottawa (the capital of Canada). Our 3 children are involved in Junior Handling and we love to travel all over Ontario and Quebec to dog shows. This is our family thing. We also love fishing, golfing, camping, horseback riding, Parelli Natural Horsemanship, going to the beach, volleyball, soccer, softball, fencing and movies. We are considering trying out lure coursing. It looks like fun!!! Breeding dogs and showing is a passion but it is something we do because we enjoy it. It is our way to have fun as a family. We have fallen in love with the basenji breed and are very grateful to our mentor Jennie Behles from New Mexico, USA who entrusted in our permanent care her World Champion basenji bitch Ahmahr Nahr Just Call Me Madam. Madam is now the pride and joy of our family and we enjoy showing her. She was bred to Jennie's World Champion stud Jake. In November we were blessed with our first litter of 7 healthy puppies. Wow what a blessing!!! We loved every minute spent with our little bundles of joy!!! They are so much fun. We laugh every day. We will start showing the pups in June. All 7 pups will be shown (by their new owners or us) and we are so exited to find out how everyone will do. One of them is scheduled to attend SICALAM in Puerto Rico soon and 2 others the World Show. This year will be a great one. I am so exited. Our everyday life is never boring. Speaking of which, I have to go play with the dogs now. Talk to you soon.

  • Welcome to the forums. I shall look out for your pups at the World Show. I am going to spectate.

@elbrant That's how all my 8-some learned to catch. If food dropped on the floor - you lost it ! So they all stood on their hind legs and it was like feeding a nest of fledgling sparrows. A gentle toss of the treat and someone caught it !

@jinxed_1980: He doesn't like water… do you think nailing him with a water gun or spray bottle would be too mean? Never had a beggar b4 need help lol 90% of basenjis don't like water LOL and many of us use the spray/squirt bottles as training tools. These are considered non evasive training means and if perfectly harmless means. Best to give a verbal correction first of "AT AT" (yes right now he will ignore you) then squirt with the "AT AT", then he'll figure it out that you can just say the "AT AT" and if he ignores you like mine you should only have to just pick up the squirt bottle and he'll stop the naughty behavior. You can use the squirt bottle for just about any naughty behavior too other than begging, but try not to over use, try to use it more as you re-directive means after he is not working with alternate training techniques

Hi, I couldn't agree more with all of you. I know that spanking my B is like shooting myself in the foot…this is why i am here - to ask for advice and help from others...UNderstand that it's something that is not done often, but i find myself more and more wanting to do it and it's a big no-no.....I live in Manitoba, Basenjis here are very few and far between, and i am lucky if the person at the pet store even knows what i am talking about. The only time he pees is after we have scolded him for something, or not allowed him to do what he wants...like when he goes to chew on something we will replace it quickly with an appropriate chew toy to re-direct his attention. He also pees when we kick the dogs off the bed or couch when they are hyper and playing, we get them to play on the floor. Basically it's when we insult him. When i come home from work if i leave the other dogs out before him, he will pee, i know he can hold it. It seems like it's his way of saying ' how dare you, ME first!" It's not that i am loud, or that he is nervous when he does it. For example Last night we were all sleeping and my partner moved and accidentally pushed Simba (my male) of the bed. Well that was it, he peed right there beside the bed. They don't sleep with us all the time, and actually more often than not they sleep in the kennel, occasionnally when we're not home much that day we will allow them to bunk with us. My eldest Basenji X was a submissive pee'er, and i was told to do the same thing. Just act like nothing, be happy and smile...ignore it because he can't control it. He doesnt do that anymore, are you tellling me to basically work along those same lines with Simba? I guess it makes sense, if he is doing it out of spite, he would eventually stop because he would start to think it doesn't bother us. hmmm..is that a light bulb?....or are you guys helping me become smarter than my basenji :P :P
