New fiction book - a nice read

Basenji Talk
  • A couple of days ago I picked up a new 2010 book called "One Good Dog" by Susan Wilson. It had been reviewed in one of our newspapers, and it sounded like a decent book. I wasn't disappointed.

It's the story of a very successful businessman who falls on hard times, and the rescued pitbull that comes into his life. I won't say more as I hate it when something is reviewed and the review basically gives the whole story away. They do that with movie trailers too - after watching them I always feel there is no reason to go to the movie.

The book is currently only published as a hardcover, selling in the U.S. for $22.99 and in Canada for $27.99. I'm sure that in 6 months to a year it will be out as a paperback.

  • Thanks for that recommendation, I needed something good to read, besides Otis new owners manual, the behaviorist books..lol.

  • I'll show this to my niece…she has three pits and was involved in rescue until her son was born two years ago. She is a HUGE pit advocate. Sounds like something she might like.

Okay, that link gave me a book about a Rottweiler. So I kept reading and see Checkmate had a section, but not whole book. Yeah, what a great name! Here is a link to the book cover so you can see Checkmate! http://www.amazon.com/What-Heidi-Knows-Gemma-Tamas/dp/1462871720/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1319985518&sr=8-1

When I was with BEAR rescue in OH, I rescued a young B/Sheltie female Mix from a Columbus shelter. We went lure coursing in PA and stayed at a motel that had waterbeds. This girl was under the covers along with the Bs and in the middle of the night I woke up to hear panting. This crazy girl did not know any better than to get out from under the covers to get cooler. I had to physically pull her out, get her some water, and put her on top of the covers to cool her off! Even though she had a narrow snout like a Sheltie, a slightly heavier coat than a B, and a looser tail, she had a running style like a B and loved to chase the lure. There was a picture taken of her lure coursing. She also like to retrieve balls which none of the Bs would do. She was a sweetie and was eventually adopted.

I would suggest waiting until you get the little guy. Indi didn't have a name for abut 2 days. We had all these names in mind and none of them fit. Thats my two cents anyway (oh ya and because we did that I have a cool costume for him on haloween but I don't think I am going to get any cooperation on his end)

I think an original idea should be developed that is associated with bs. The weims dressed up is so classic for them. Bs should somehow be associated with messes. Maybe they should be paired with new furniture advertising or TP sales!!! Weims became so popular tho, they are having probs in rescue. They are very high energy and most people can't give them enough exercise. I think my idea would prevent Bs from becoming too popular and lots more ending up in rescue. :D

The only thing I would be concerned about with a Dachshund would be the possiblity of it having some back damage with the rough play of a basenji…or even trying to do the same acrobatics that Bs do. I have known some folks who had a lot of problems with disk and spine problems with Doxies...but I don't know if that is typical. Something to think about though...
