Points Questions - Class dog over specials

Basenji Showing
  • My understanding is that specials are considered as class dogs if a class dog goes over a special for either BOB or BOS. In BOB, you can count the specials of both sexes and as BOS you can count the specials of the same sex.

So if the entry is 2-1-(2-0)-0 and it takes 4 dogs for 2 points or 5 bitches for 2 points.

If the class bitch goes WB/BOW/BOB, I know she gets 1 point as BOW. But how do you count the other male specials, do you just add them to the other class dogs so that there are effectively 4 class dogs? And does the combination of the 4 dogs + 1 BOB bitch then give you 2 pts (are the dogs effectively bitches or are they still considered as dogs for points for the bitch)?

My head is spinning getting this straight.

  • The count does not become 5. You have 2 class dogs for the one point. The bitch going BOB means you add the 2 male specials to the number of class males to mean the bitch defeated 4 total dogs for 2 points. So you are on the right track with regard to how it all works. Good job. And assuming it was your bitch, congrats on the 2 points.

Glad I'm not the only one. ;)

  • If WD was BOS it would be 2 + 2 = 4 for 2pts then WB would get 2pts going BOW/BOB. Otherwise, it is just 1 + 2 = 3 for 1 point for WB if she was BOB over WD and specials.

So, in the latter case, if I have this right, you ignore the class dogs, and two specials are considered effectively as bitches? And so the WB/BOB would have to have beat 4 specials, 1 + 4 = 5?

  • Correct. BOB can only add the specials to the class animals of their sex.

  • Thanks Lisa and Linda! This isn't a points calculation I've had to do before. And, Linda, I forgot before to say Thanks for the Congrats! But, I'll brag about that separately. :D

  • Phew. I am glad someone has their thinking cap on. Thanks for the lesson Lisa.

@nomrbddgs: When dogs are out, they definitely do act different. There are new things to experience. But once they've been exposed to the ring a couple of times, they settle down. We lived in Niagara Falls for many, many years and I would take my dogs to the heart of the tourism area and walk up and down the sidewalk. Loud noises, buses, different types of people, etc was excellent for them. When obedience training, this was perfect. It taught them to be distraction proof. Ill have to take her for walks down main street and stuff when it warms up a bit… Vanderlae would love that and i know the dogs would too! hehe and i agree it will help with the distractions! :D

I think what it may mean though a little hard to say out of context is that it is a BRACE Class where non-regular class entries are not eligible to participate. Not sure though.

Our Breed Council organises breed seminars in the UK for aspiring judges which they have to pass to progress up the judging lists (I was an assessor at the last one and am a KC approved judge for Basenjis). The colours are definitely gone through thoroughly and we try to have representatives of at least the main four colours, though the brindles and especially blacks are very thin on the ground and Ruby and Bryn have done sterling service as colour reps! At the last seminar there were examples of both regular and barred tris. At the moment we have no recessive blacks in the show ring and rarely do, but the colour is mentioned in the presentation with an explanation of how it tends to change with age. There has not been a trindle shown here to the best of my knowledge so we have yet to tackle that thorny issue. The BC presentation emphasises clear, rich, well-demarcated colours. Naturally some judges see colour as more of a priority than others. I do try to ensure that there is a b/w at the seminars if at all possible, as many upcoming judges may never have seen one and probably never gone over one.

@soulmate: Never heared of these judges before. But I have to tell you, that I am quite happy with these lots of new judges no one knows already. So you never know, what you can expect….. Regards, Esther That's True! :D On my showlist there are many unknown judges! Only hope they all know enough of B's :D @ibi_n_sane: well mrs, Broecker, she judges my ibizans once on a show in the morning and later she called them back as she had to judge the pharaohhounds… she is also not very carefull and really rough with the dogs she judges. said enough? >grin< but for the group you should not care about this ;) Thanks :D For the group judgements we don't mind the judge.. But to call in an Ibizan for a Pharaoh… hmz... hahahaha (did they play in the mud the day before show???)

@lvoss: Here is Bella's win picture from Pomona. I don't think my dad noticed her accidently cropped out part of her rear. She looks nice - even with part of her missing :D:D! Congrats again!
