    Hello,
    What is a good leash for a basenji to train him to walk?
    Is there any special requirement regarding type of leash that a basenji should use for dog shows?

    Leash for show is usually short, thin, made of leather or nylon. There are a number on sites on line that you can buy them from, or go to a local dog show and there are lots of vendors that sell them. (usually the nylon ones). And typically they are shown in a choke chain collar, very small links. Here is a thread for a while ago when someone was selling show leads. I know she doesn't have any more, but will give you an idea about them.

    If you have a basenji that pulls really hard, a leather leash is a lot nicer on your hands than a nylon one. We're continuously working on leash walking, and if we go somewhere on nylon leads with lots of squirrels, birds, chipmunks, moving shadows etc, my hands get torn up.

    If you attend a conformation show, you'll usually find several vendors that sell conformation leash/collars.

    I prefer the 4' for walking. I use the 3/8, but it really does not matter they are so close in size. definitely buy leather. I usually get mine from J & J dog supply, good quality and reasonable prices. http://www.jjdog.com/ I've been using one leash for 21 yrs now and its still in great shape. The trick is to keep them away from the little chewing basenjis.

    I have had to buy 2 leather leashes to replace my friend's that he left on the table at the dog park. My darling Nicky thinks that leather leashes are the yummiest things ever! And she can gnaw through one before you even realize what she's up to.
    But I agree, and so does Nicky, that leather leashes are the best (we like them for different reasons, haha).

    My Basenjis agree that leather is much nicer!! They eat them asap.!! So far the metal parts have escaped! Any one would think I don't feed them!!

    However I think that there is nothing nicer than a good leather lead, I keep mine for best or when I don't have too many dog out together so that I can't watch them all at the same time. I use a 2cm for walking and a 1cm for showing.

    I have worked with feral dogs in rescue who had never been on a leash, adults. Teaching loose leash walking isn't hard, but you need to back it with the "leave it" command. Mary's site is so simply it will make you feel faint. And it works. No pop and jerk, just good positive training. The lessons are on the left, other issues on the right. http://www.clickerlessons.com/index.htm I certainly would go through most the training, then get into an obedience class, but make sure by positive trainers .. go watch a couple of sessions first.

    His half sister Lulu just recently redecorated her owners bedroom via the comforter. Her owner said, 5 years is too old for a comforter so Lulu was right to think it needed replacing. She signed it Lulu and her cohort incrimg (oops design assistant) Sonny and her mom who gets to shop for a new comforter and her dad who gets to pay for it. Thank goodness his litter sister Lyric has stuck to destroying toys. Therese

    Are the wider collars okay to use with a puller? I'm still working with trying to get mine to stop pulling when we're out walking - the gentle leader helps - but I can't use that when we go to training class.

    Mirtillo isn't allowed off leash either. Only when I'm sure there is no traffic within a radius of 10 km.. When we go to such places I ask other dogowners if their dogs listen well and if it's ok that I let Mirtillo off leash. When Mirtillo doesn't listen.. the other dogs will and I can 'catch' him. It occasionally happens that his leash slips through my fingers, but when I call him then, he always returns immediatly. (knowing I'm having some very yummy treats)

    I just stand still when Mirtillo pulls. He has a normal collar and leash. I wait untill he makes a turn and comes to me or makes eye contact. When he comes, he gets a treat. (just his normal kibble) When he makes eye contact I tell him he's a good boy. We are now at the point that when he comes he doesn't immediatly gets his treat, he first has to follow, sit, follow and then it's ok. On the flexi I mostly try to call him to come to me before he is at the end of the line, he gets a treat and he is 'free' again. On the normal leash Mirtillo also gets rewarded when he just looks at me and/or walks next to me. That way I'm way more interesting then the ground… When there is a dog/cat/bird and he pulls, I don't expect him to pay attention to me.. so I'm happy when he sits when I stand still and gives a quick glance at me. I also tried the method of just making a lot of turns, until the dog pays attention.. I didn't like it.. it was frustrating for me and for Mirtillo. I don't like to pull back.. I believe it is way too easy for the dog.. When I stand still, Mirtillo has to figure out how to get me walking again.. It's more of a positive game. When he pulls, I don't think... Ooooooohw.. here we go again........... But I think: ok, this is a great opportunity to get him to pay attention to me.. And I just stand still.. first he will ignore me, he will sniff somewhere else (there is no pulling anymore), then he will try to pull again to make me clear he wants to go there.. then he cries.. And then he thinks: I HATE YOU.. and he looks at me and comes to me with a face like: IS THIS OK??? And then I praise, give something yummie and we're both happy.
